Seasonal Decorating and Ham

Wow! Where has the year gone?  It is time to decorate for Christmas already.  I feel like it was just Easter.  The funny thing is both holidays often serve ham.  Ham makes an economical dinner for the family.

Whether it is a shoulder ham or a spiral ham both taste great!  If I had to choose one I would pick the spiral ham.  I like how it literally falls off of the bone in a spiral pattern.  This makes it easier to serve in my opinion.  When serving, it is important to have a great topping.  My favorite is a sauce that has a hint of mustard.  One other thing that is important not to forget; the cherries on top!

Thanksgiving

Well, Thanksgiving is in a few days.  I really wish that Thanksgiving was given a little more attention.  Years after years retail stores like to drag out the Halloween candy immediately after the Fourth of July and as soon as Halloween is over they spend what feels like only a week on Thanksgiving decorations before Christmas is taken out.

In the future it would be nice to see the stores spend more time celebrating this important holiday.  This holiday is the foundation of our country.  We should give thanks not only for all we have been given but also to the pioneers who came before us.

Halloween

Halloween is almost here and I can’t wait!  I am thinking about traveling to some place spooky for Halloween.  That is going to be so much fun!  I do not generally like to see scary things or at least subject myself to them.  However this year is going to be different.

I am going to be brave and see if I can go meet some witches. Maybe they can cast a good luck spell on me. Whats the worst that could happen? I suppose I could be changed into a frog.

Birthdays

October seems to be a popular month for birthdays.  I know so many people this month with a birthday.  I even know two people with birthdays on Halloween.

I think it would be neat to have a birthday on Halloween.  This would be one of the better holidays to have a birthday on.  I wonder if I would want a “Halloween themed” birthday celebration or if I would want to pretend my birthday wasn’t on Halloween?  It sure beats Christmas.

Hydrangea

I noticed today that I better pick my beautiful hydrangea flowers before they fall of off the stem.  They starting to dry out outside.  They are pink and green in color and gorgous.

If I do not pick them soon not only will they fall of the vine outside but the color will fade.  I really like their two- tone color.  I plan to put them in a vase with water in a dark location.  When the water has evaporated I will be able to put them in the daylight.

Big Weekend

This weekend has been awesome!  Labor Day weekend is always a blast.  It is a chance to have an end of summer party.  It is a great time to enjoy the final days of warmer weather.

I had a lot of people over to my place this weekend.  We even let the children camp out in the backyard.  They always love this.  Sitting around the camp fire and reminiscing about past summer memories is perhaps the most enjoyable of all.

Sunrise

This morning was the most beautiful sunrise.  I love watching  multiple colors dance across the sky as the world awakens.  Someday I shall have a mural in my home of a sunrise.  Many of the local hardware stores have murals for sale of sunrises.  They do not come cheap.

However, the motifs they offer are worth the cost.  They even have some designs that include palm trees and white sand.  This is a relaxing scene as well.

Dogs Days Continue

The heat index is what I care about lately. How hot does it feel? How much more heat can we stand?

The temperature, humidity and lack of a cool breeze have made it feel like over 100 degrees for almost 3 months straight now. We still have all of August and most of September as our summer. Ugh!

We sure could use a couple of weeks of cooler temperatures.

Fresh Fish

With the problems in the Gulf of Mexico and the big oil spill, I am worried that buying fresh fish at the market is going to become a problem here. I asked the seafood and deli clerk at Publix if they are having any trouble getting the fish and she said that they are fine, no trouble yet. Thanks good to hear, but I worry  about the winter and spring as the full effects become more evident.

Fireworks!

Tonight is the annual fireworks in my community.  They are always spectacular.  This is when the community really comes together; on the Fourth of July.  My community spends a great deal of time raising money for the fireworks year round.

This year we have raised one of our greatest amounts so it ought to be a fantastic show.  After the fireworks we all gather at the dairy bar to eat ice cream.  I can’t wait for this too because I am really craving mint chocolate chip!  Happy Independence Day!
