Hummingbirds

While I was out in my future flower garden today I saw a hummingbird on my butterfly bush.  I could tell it was a female due to the nonexistent red throat.  She was amazing though.  I couldn’t help but wonder if she had some little baby hummingbirds waiting for her back at the nest.

Have you ever seen any pictures of hummingbird nests?  They are so tiny.  I personally haven’t seen one up close but I have seen multiple in nature periodicals.  Not only are the nests impressive but their eggs are nearly microscopic in size.  Again, really impressive.  These birds are miraculous and a jewel of nature.

Love and Marriage

Last night the news had an interesting segment about love and marriage in terms of the percentage of baby boomers who are now happily divorced.  The statistics did surprise me slightly.

The news report stated that 39% of people believe in not getting married.  The average age of men getting married currently is 28, while females average is 26.  Nearly 51% of marriages will end in divorce.  That is why most couples currently are waiting at least four years before walking down the aisle.

I was surprised most by the percentage of people not believing in marriage.  This must have multiple reasons behind it.  Like I mentioned earlier baby boomers, the oldest this year turning 65, most have already been married have decided that now all they want in a relationship is more of a friendship with no strings attached.  they are discovering that they are much happier not getting remarried.  In a way this is a shame.  Marriage traditionally was meant to be a good thing but unfortunately, with the state of the economy among other factors, marriage has transformed into another hassle/ complication that people are realizing they do not need in their lives.

Black Friday

Today was the so called Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. It is called the biggest sale day of year, I have never went out shopping on Black Friday, I do not like huge crowds and hate the rudeness of the people on this kind of a day. I saw one report of a Wal-mart employee killed by a stampeding crowd in New York. I would hate to think how those people would act if it was an emergency or a natural disaster. Makes me want to stay in my house with my dogs with the door locked.

Medicare for Mom

As I have mentioned briefly, I care for my 74 year old mother. She came to live with me almost three years ago after taking a bad fall. I love her to death but honestly with her doctor appointments, and prescription refills all the time, it can feel like a part time job. She sees her regular doctor every two months, her cardiologist every three months, and then there are the quarterly appointments to have her pacemaker checked. Luckily, I have a job that allows me to leave and take her to her appointments without any trouble.

We are fortunate that she has good health insurance, including medicare part d. Most of her prescriptions are very inexpensive and very affordable. One, new prescription is $80 per month which is steep! We are fortunate that she is actually on very few prescriptions considering her heart problems.

She is worth it though and has always been there for me, throughout my entire life. I am happy that I am able to have her live with me and care for her. I will never be able to repay her for everything she has done for me in my life, but this feels like a small step towards that.

Night Creams

Ever since I was a small girl I have used many different night creams to help keep my skin moist, some worked very well some not at all. I got to searching on the internet for some night cream reviews, what I found amazed even cynical old me.

The one night cream that I have used for years was not given a very high score on the web site that I found with the very best night cream reviews. Night Creams has a great web site with a lot of information on which night cream is rated high and which ones are rated low. I plan to make my night cream choices from here on out on which ones have been rated higher than the rest.

I love the way that a good night cream makes my skin feel and I have always been very selective on which night cream I use and I see no reason to change that now that I am on the down hill side of 40, I need a better night cream now that I ever needed when I was 20. All the help I can get to choose a better night cream will be appreciated very highly.

Sweet Emptiness

Eliminating and staying away from desserts and sweets can be a challenging task for many individuals.  For some reason the human body for most has a natural response to crave sugar. The strength of craving depends on the individual.  Some people have a need to eat something sweet after every meal. One option for a sweet treat is candy.

There is a variety of choices when it comes to candy. Everything from chocolate to sweet to sour. There literally is something for everyone. They say “variety is the spice of life” however, in this case I think perhaps our country has too many varieties.

Having all of these options makes obtaining the fill for a person’s craving too easy in my opinion. The United States has an obesity problem. Eating candy and sweets does not help shed the pounds. Desserts and candy are pure empty calories that leave an individual craving more, creating a vicious circle.

No A/C

Now that it has gotten real hot and humid, the air conditioning on my Tahoe has decided to go out. I am not sure how much it will cost to get fixed but I have to get it in the shop to find out.

None of our vehicles right now has working air conditioning and that is a bad deal all the way around. It was 95 degrees today and they say that it is going to be even hotter tomorrow, I have to get the air conditioning fixed in one of our vehicles soon.

Each summer we hear stories about people leaving their kids or their pets in their cars during the extreme heat. It breaks my heart. I don’t understand why anyone would think that this would be acceptable. I think that those who are found guilty of this type of behavior should be punished in the same manner as the victim was treated.

Cheesy Goodness

One of my absolute favorite kinds of cheese is provolone cheese. I think that this cheese goes really great with almost any sandwich. Personally, I prefer to use it the most in my sandwiches. Provolone has a nice mild flavor that mixes quite well with turkey and roast beef.

Another kind of cheese that I use a lot in Italian dishes is ricotta cheese. The dish that I use ricotta the most in is lasagna. I have tried multiple types of lasagna recipes and I think that recipe that ricotta works the best in is crock pot lasagna. The cheese melts really well in the crock pot especially because it is able sit for hours and melt amongst the rest of the ingredients.

Amongst all of the delicious cheeses to choose from I usually try to pick low fat cheese. Cheese although, good for you is also very high in fat. In moderation cheese is good for you. However, many of us have a hard time because cheese is nearly found in all dishes we eat.

New neice

My sisters youngest daughter has had a beautiful baby girl and to get the perfect gift for this newest member of our family I have decided to go all out and get her some unique baby blankets for the baby. A new baby brings out the very best in most people and I am one of those who love the new babies. In this family it is my job to get the newest babies wonderful gifts and baby stuff they can keep their whole lives.

The New Marriage

Today I heard some interesting statistics on the world news.  The news anchor was discussing the recent views of love and marriage for the ages of 18-29.  These views have changed drastically over the last decade.  Apparently, the mindset of this group of people in today’s society is that of raising children over getting married.

The news anchor reports that in 2010, 52% of people ages 18-29 think that being a successful parent over getting married while only 30% of this group believes that having a successful marriage is more important. This does not surprise me.  People in this age group are more concerned with getting their careers started before getting married.  Unfortunately, for some they become involved in a relationship that creates a child before they get married.  I think that this has a lot to do with these statistics.  I think that in the future we we consider to see these trends as the economy declines.  People will look to alternative methods of entertainment, not always for the better.
