Rising Food

I was in the grocery store the other day and had a huge wake-up call.  The prices of groceries have sky rocketed.  I was amazed that a bag of sugar is now up to three dollars.  Flour surprisingly has not increased it was still only a couple of bucks.  Fruit and vegetables have also gone up in price.  The cost to eat healthy is soon going to be impossible.  The government wants Americans to reevaluate our diets and start to eat healthier but with the cost of food rising Americans will not be able to.  The end result will be the continuation of obesity in America.

Unfortunately,  it is not only food that is increasing.  The cost of cotton is also rising.  Therefore the cost of clothing will start to go up and even the cheapest brands will no longer be inexpensive.  I wonder what the end result of this will be?  Will there be an increase of thrift shops?  Will thrift shops be forced to increase their prices on clothing?

A Thanksgiving Treat

The Author of this post is Solomon Dejesus

While I knew that Thanksgiving was going to be great, what I didn’t know was that I was going to be heading out and about for Thanksgiving. Thankfully I didn’t have to go very far and my in-laws house was not the stop that we would be making. For the first time ever my wife and I had been invited to our friends home for Thanksgiving and their house was located close by to ours which meant that I would not miss a minute of the action on the football field.

When we reached our friends home we could already smell the aroma of turkey wafting out of the open window before we even got into the home. We knew that the meal was going to be great, but we were not sure how great of a meal we were going to be in for until we sat down at the table. When her husband carved the turkey we could see how juicy the breast meat was with the juices pouring out of it. Then taking the first bite we were in heaven as we could think about nothing other than the wonderful meal we were sharing.

As we headed home that night my wife reminded me that that we needed to disarm the system when we got home. That is when I remembered that before we left the house she had set the Home Security Systems to ensure the house would be safe when we arrived home.

Fitness sales

I find it amusing every year after the holidays how the department stores and restaurants for that matter seem to “push” healthy behaviors on the public.  The department stores advertise heavily exercise equipment and diet pills.  They also tend to display the “healthier” foods available in the stores.

Restaurants try their best to create menu options that are lower in calories or sugar.  Therefore, when patrons place their orders they feel as though they are eating more healthily.  I am not convinced that these new found menu options are really any better for you than eating a double bacon cheeseburger.  Personally, if I am planning on eating out I am already under the assumption that my food selection will be unhealthy and I am OK with that.

Seasonal Decorating and Ham

Wow! Where has the year gone?  It is time to decorate for Christmas already.  I feel like it was just Easter.  The funny thing is both holidays often serve ham.  Ham makes an economical dinner for the family.

Whether it is a shoulder ham or a spiral ham both taste great!  If I had to choose one I would pick the spiral ham.  I like how it literally falls off of the bone in a spiral pattern.  This makes it easier to serve in my opinion.  When serving, it is important to have a great topping.  My favorite is a sauce that has a hint of mustard.  One other thing that is important not to forget; the cherries on top!

Shopping

Today I have to go to the grocery store to buy all of my Thanksgiving fixings.  I hope I am shopping early enough in order to avoid the rush.  Crowds are the worst when you are trying to get the items you came for and leave.

One thing I absolutely cannot forget to pick up two kinds of cranberry sauce.  One kind is the whole berry and the other is the jellied kind.  There are several people coming to dinner that prefer one or the other.  I have to make my guests happy!

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

I love Charlie Brown television specials.  They always make me feel happier after the show is over.  Charlie Brown is very lucky to have such caring friends.

Charlie Brown’s friends made sure that they were all able to eat Thanksgiving dinner together despite not having a turkey.  This television special shows that as long as people gather with others who care about them they can have a great meal and holiday even without the traditional fixings.

Festive cookies

Today I am going to bake some holiday cookies.  I enjoy making sugar cookies in festive shapes and then decorate them with colored frosting.  It is so cheerful!

I think this year I will bake some pumpkins this year.  Some will be jack-o-lanterns and others will be regular pumpkins.  I really like pumpkins because they can be good for the entire fall season.

Harvest

Today I helped a family member harvest the remaining vegetables from their garden.  They asked me to help due to the chance of a frost.  If we leave the remaining crops out in the garden they will be soft and potentially ruined.  It is better to take the time today and get it done.

My family enjoys my help when I gave give it.  I do my best because it is important to help people whether they are your family or not.

Unsatisfactory service

Customer service is very important to me.  Good customer service even more so.  However, on a recent trip to a local Italian restaurant my guests and I received less than desirable service.

The restaurant knew it was a large party coming to eat dinner.  When we arrived we had two waitresses but as soon as they saw the number of people they had the restaurant decided we only needed one waitress.  A big mistake!   She was horrible.  Three- quarters of our orders were all wrong; providing meat in the dishes that asked for no meat and no meat where meat was ordered.  We had to ask for refills on all our drinks instead of the waitress noticing and refilling it automatically.  We also had to wait a half an hour for our bills.  The waitress had to re due our slips three times before they were right.  I was baffled by the whole experience and had spread the word about boycotting this establishment.  This comes after the owner even failed to mail me the restaurants apology as promised over the telephone.

Big Weekend

This weekend has been awesome!  Labor Day weekend is always a blast.  It is a chance to have an end of summer party.  It is a great time to enjoy the final days of warmer weather.

I had a lot of people over to my place this weekend.  We even let the children camp out in the backyard.  They always love this.  Sitting around the camp fire and reminiscing about past summer memories is perhaps the most enjoyable of all.
