Prevention and Protection

Moms are the beginning and the end when it comes to keeping our homes running smoothly. Not only do we take care of balancing the checkbooks, paying the bills, cleaning the house, and raising the kids, we also have to see that our home and family are protected. Protection comes in many different forms, from safety to pest control.

When you buy a new home, you have the obligatory inspection done. They test for everything from water damage, roof leaks and termites. When the report comes back, you decide if you really want the house or not. Ours came back clean but in order to keep it that way, it needed regular maintenance. I saw to it that we are continually protected from infestation by Terminix pest control.  I don’t want my dream home damaged by little bugs.

There are a few things that you can do for some extra prevention:

  • Make sure the soil slopes away from the house
  • Keep plants at least three feet from the house
  • Use plastic sheeting under the house to cover the dirt.
  • Point sprinklers away from the house

You should never have any standing water around the base of the home, as termites need water for survival. Get rid of any dead or dying trees and don’t pile up firewood against the house. You shouldn’t have those anywhere near it in fact. Make sure the base of the house shows about six inches of the concrete foundation all the way around it. Don’t use a lot of mulch around the house, as it breeds termites.

Depending on your area and the regular weather you have there, you might want to make sure there are no large trees too close to the house either. They can be knocked over by storms and you don’t want them to fall on the house. I know that they shade the house and help keep electricity bills down, but in areas with high straight line winds, those trees can be dangerous to your home and your family. Keep the trees well trimmed as well. This way you won’t have to worry about dead branches falling from them.

When you buy a home with a pool and you have small children, you should invest in a safety pool fence. Some of them are removable for those pool parties and such, but they are definitely worth the expense to keep your children safe. In addition to the safety fence, you can put latches or locks at the top of the doors to your home to keep the children from wandering outside. Kids have a tendency to do that the moment you turn your back or use the restroom.

Make sure you have the safety plugs for all of your outlets as well. We all know that children love to stick things into small holes and spaces. We buy them lots of toys teach them to do just that and need to make sure they can’t do it in the wrong space. This goes along with cabinet locks to keep children out of chemicals and such as well. You would be surprised to learn how many children are able to get that Pine-sol bottle open and drink it.

Protecting your home and your family is not very difficult or even expensive if you take simple precautions. Most of it is common sense and easily done on your own without the help of professionals. If you do need a professional to help you, just do your research and you will be fine. I hope this helps you ladies. I know that a lot of it helped me when we first bought our home.

Bring Me an Eggroll

I’m the first to admit that I’m not a big fan of Asian food. I think part of it may be that where I grew up there was no Asian food. I never had anything remotely Asian until I got into college, and that was the cheap take out food that you eat by ordering combination #1 or combo #2. The only food I was willing to try was sweet and sour pork. That was OK, but the best part of the meal was the eggroll. Don’t ask me why, but I like eggrolls.

So tonight we went to an upscale Asian restaurant and I didn’t know what anything on the menu would taste like. They did not have a sweet and sour pork, but they did have eggrolls. So I ordered a chicken dish with a funny name and the eggrolls – the eggrolls were awesome. The best I’ve ever had!

The county fair

The county fair is this week and I know that the kids are really wanting to go. It is a relatively small fair in comparison to some, but we really like it and it doesn’t tax your wallet too much.

There are plenty of ride to keep the kids happy and the animal shows are really great. Don’t forget the awesome food that they always have as well. If you are in our area, you should go and check it out. We will see you there!

Yummy yummy

My friend just popped by on her way home from work and brought me some goodies from her job. She works at Buffalo Wild Wings and I just love there food and she knows it. Lemon pepper wings, onion rings and potato wedges. So fattening, but soooo good. I am in heaven. =)

Went off without a hitch

Of course it did, because I planned it all. Our Memorial Weekend festivities were amazing as always. Two days of fun in the sun and one day of down time to recuperate. The last day I HAD to have after all of the work I did putting it all together.

We spent Saturday at the local park that has a skate park and various other entertainments available for the kids and adults. There was live music playing, so I figured it would be a great place for us to all get together. Of course I had to get up a five am to be there by six am and make sure we got a good spot near the bandstand. I was able to even get a pavilion for us.

Sunday we all went out on the boats, and jet ski’s. We had a spot along the river where we BBQ’d and enjoyed ourselves immensely. A good time was had by all.

Monday I didn’t bother to get out of my pj’s and told everyone that they were on their own for breakfast and lunch. We had plenty of left over’s to use for dinner, so I was able to just heat up that stuff with a minimum of effort.

I told me sister that the next holiday weekend is HER’S to coordinate. I want to relax and have fun like everyone else without being a military Sargent the whole time. Good luck sis!

(it actually took me most of the week to recuperate) lol

What an amazing weekend

We had a Mother’s Day BBQ and the guys did all of the cooking and cleaning up. The kids pitched in and helped as well, but to see my father, hubby and father-in-law, all trying to please us women was so amazing. I have the greatest family ever. We women decided to make sure that their Father’s Day is just as awesome for them next month. Maybe we will send them on a fishing trip or something. We will have to decide later.

Going out to dinner

We are going out to dinner to one of my favorite restaurants. It’s an Old English pup style place with the best food ever. I have been craving a prime rib just for some time now and there are not very many places that make that dish any longer.

They also serve and old fashioned English Shepherds pie. Now that is really hard to find. Of course there are also the obligatory fish and chips, etc… but it is well worth the drive to get there. The prices are really good as well.

Wine with dinner

I am having a dinner party at my house for a few friends and my boyfriend. My mother is taking the kids for the weekend, so I can have some adult time. I am making a Chicken Bruschetta with angel hair pasta, a spinach salad and garlic rolls. I want to have a nice Chardonnay with it because white wine goes best with chicken. I have made this dish plenty of times and even the kids love it.

It has been a long time since I have been able to have a dinner party like this. I will have to buy several bottles of wine, and I might even have a little champagne to toast with. I haven’t made up my mind on that one. I plan to get one of those word games for us to play as well after dinner. I used to have one, but the kids lost a lot of the question and answer cards to it. They have a lot of new ones out now anyway. I think one of the Pictionary games would be best. They have a few different kind of them for me to chose from. I also will break out the Jenga game as well. I really love to play that one. Once the wine starts flowing, it gets really fun.

Dinner time

I am feeling lazy tonight. I am just going to bake the chicken in the oven and make some easy sides. I love to cook, but sometimes I just don’t feel like it. I know that I am not the only one, but when you have children, you have no choice. I make sure that I have easy stuff on hand for those nights. They are still nutritious, but low maintenance and take little effort. Baked chicken, mac n cheese and some corn is the name of the game tonight. Easy peasy!

Sometimes, easy is the best way to go. The kids never complain about what I cook. I don’t want to too my own horn, but I do cook quite well. I know that this is actually one of their favorite dinners. All kids love mac n cheese after all.
