Pests

I have found a family of rats down in the barn. I know it is the barn but I really want them gone. We are about to start raising chickens and I cannot have the rats stealing chicks or feed out of there. Not to mention that the children could be bitten should they come across one while feeding the chickens. That would definitely not be good.

I have called the pest control service to come out and take care of this problem. They should be here by Friday and I hope that it wont take too much to deal with the rats. Under normal circumstances I would just put out rat poison and take care of it myself. However, with children and our pets running all over the place I cannot take the chance and require a professional to handle it. Sometimes you just have to get some help. I hope everyone has a great day.

Crazy weather

This winter has had the craziest weather I have ever seen. It has been so mild a winter with only one dusting of snow and a lot of rain. The other night we had a major storm with tornadoes and super strong winds. That is spring time weather for my area and very unusual for this time of year. The kids are definitely disappointed about the lack of snowfall to say the least. One snow day and no sledding or snowmen makes for slightly unhappy kids. I have to smile about that but then again they have been stuck in the house because of all the rain that I cannot blame them for being a little upset. Too much rain and too much mud for them to be outside playing. I hope the weather gets a little better soon.

Sprucing up the house

Sometimes just the little things you do can spruce up the outside of your house. Like putting up residential address plaques. I have found the prettiest plaques to put up on the front of the house. They have not only the house number but the street on it as well. I am not sure if I want to get one to go directly on the front of the house itself, or one that goes on the front lawn. I know for sure that I want a bronze address plaques as opposed to wood or ceramic.

The custom address plaques I have found are elegant and not too expensive, and there is a large selection for me to choose from. Maybe I will pick a few that I like and then let the kids vote on the one they like the most out of that selection. I am sure they will like the fact that I let them help make the decision on which one to buy.

Serenity

I love the serene quality of this picture. It makes me feel like I am one with the Earth and Sky. I hope everyone else enjoys it as well.

Raising chickens

The kids and I decided that since we have such a large piece of property, we can put it to good use. We are going to start raising backyard chickens. We are building a chicken coop out by the barn all by ourselves. This ought to be interesting as we are fast becoming good little builders. the kids are excited about the project, but I have a feeling they aren’t going to want to feed them later when the chicks get bigger.

We should have enough eggs and chickens for sale to make a tidy little profit that hopefully will pay for the chicken feed as well. If we end up with too many chickens to sell, we can always eat them. I will have to make sure the kids know that they are farm animals not pets though. Of course I will have to learn how to kill and clean them, and that is going to be the hard part as I have never done that before. I am sure I can learn in no time, but plucking them from what I hear is a tedious process. Wish us luck in our new little business.

Not as easy as it seems

Well, I am trying to quit smoking and even though I am using the E-Cig it is incredibly hard to do. The cravings are not really satisfied by the e-cig and if you have the least bit of stress, then not at all. I am going to persevere for my self and for my kids. How in the heck did I start smoking to begin with? Probably thought it was cool in high school.

New Mailboxes

So I live in a rural area. We don’t have house to house mail delivery, we have cluster mailboxes. Ours were destroyed by the last storm that passed though the other day. I don’t know if a tornado got them or what it was. Perhaps flying debris or just straight line winds did it, but we have to replace them now with a new clustered mailbox.

We are looking at approved cluster mailboxes the association picked out for us to decide on. In the long run it doesn’t matter which ones they pick as long as they work. I hope they are replaced by the end of next week, because I am having to run to the post office to get my mail until then, and that is a bit of a drive. It is worth living in the country, so the kids have plenty of room though.

Boy friend problems

Men are such a pain. This man was so adamant about communication between us and then when he is upset about something, he gets quiet and wont talk to me. A relationship takes two people working on it and talking out their problems. You cannot ignore the person you are with or get quiet and pout. That solves nothing and only makes things worse. Get a grip and grow up.

Are the Muppets still relevant?

Guest written by our friend Sergio Chaney

Last night I was watching the CMA awards on www.expertsatellite.com and I saw a commercial for a new Muppets movie. Not too long after that the hosts of the show did a sketch with Miss Piggie. It got me thinking. When was the last time I saw the Muppets on something? I think it has been at least 10 years or more since I last saw anything new come out featuring the Muppets. I don’t have children so I am not up on these things but I would think I would notice a commercial or a print ad or something. Do kids even like puppets anymore? I would think that with the new age of technology and Pixar they wouldn’t be interested in watching puppets on a stage. I guess you still have Sesame Street whose characters are basically huge puppets. I always loved Big Bird and Snufalupagus as a child but you never know with kids these days. They probably watch CSI and try to figure out who committed the crime. Or maybe they are watching some computer generated cartoon that has deeply involved plots with twists and turns that you wouldn’t expect. Gosh I am glad I don’t have kids yet. I am not ready for their advanced little minds.

Watching for the Bus

When we moved out here, the idea of having a lot of land for the boys to run and play was one of the top reasons I wanted to get this house. The house itself is really old and needs a lot of work, but my backyard is 40 acres of woods, with creeks and hills, and a large cleared area down by the road where I can put a garden in the spring.

The only drawback to this property so far is that the school bus comes really early to pick up my kids, as they have to be down by the mailbox in the dark during the winter to catch the bus to school. It is only dark for about a month in the middle of winter, and every day that we get closer to spring means there is more light and the days get longer.

I don’t feel comfortable with the idea that my kids are standing by the road in the dark by themselves, so I usually get dressed when they get up and after breakfast I walk down to the mailbox with them and watch for the bus.

This morning it wasn’t so dark anymore and I thought that I might stop walking down to the road with the kids. But they surprised me and flipped out when I suggested it. I think that is kind of cool that they like spending those few minutes together first thing in the mornings. And I could use the exercise, anyway.
