Nice chat

Well my neighbor just came over for a little visit. We sat and talked for about an hour over coffee and some homemade pie she brought with her. We discussed our plans for our gardens this year and how big we had decided to go with it. Her husband is kind enough to bring his tractor over and plow my garden area for me since I don’t have one myself. I have thought about investing in one but just haven’t got to that point yet.

She said her husband suggested that we plow a whole field this year and set up a vegetable stand to sell the excess. We could take turns running it and split the county fees if we both contributed crops to sell from it. I think it would be a fine idea, but I also know that it would be a lot of work too. I will have to give it some thought before I commit to it.

Dominos Online Was Great

There were coupons on the bulletin board for Dominos Pizza, so I decided to order a pizza and maybe some hot wings for dinner.

I couldn’t find the phone number for the store that delivers to my neighborhood, so I decided to try ordering online. That was really easy. I just put in my address and they figured out who delivers and sent the order to them.

Online had more coupons deals and I got exactly what I wanted without being put on hold or having to repeat myself for someone who does not speak English. Then an online order tracker popped up, so I could tell how close the pizza was to being ready and on its way. It was really easy – I’ll do that again next time I have a pizza craving.

Super Size and Get a Free Glass

It has been months since I went to a McDonald’s, so I was pleasantly surprised today when I went to their drive through and found a special promotion underway. If you super size your value meal you get a free Coca Cola glass with your order. It is only while supplies last, so I doubt I will get a full set of the free glasses. But I got two glasses today and might go back one day next week to get two more. But that is all the McDonald’s I can take, with visits so close together. The glasses are not and nostalgic. I remember ordering a cherry coke at the drug store soda fountain when I was a kid and the coke came in a glass that was shaped like these.

Trader Joe’s Goodies

We have one Trader Joe’s store here but it is a 40 minute drive from my house, so I don’t go there for my regular shopping.

There is a grocery store only 1 mile from my house, and another store just 2 miles past that. But Trader Joe’s sells a lot of products that are branded just for them, so you can’t buy those anywhere else.

Today I had the chance to meet a friend across town, so I took advantage of being over thee to stop in at Trader Joe’s and stock up on all the goodies.

Tired from Cooking

Wow – I’ve been on my feet since 8 o’clock this morning cooking all kinds of food for Thanksgiving dinner and I’m really tired. I needed to take a 20 minute break and get off my feet, check emails, and throw the ball for my poor neglected dogs. The dogs are very happy to have me in the kitchen – they get lots of scraps and anything I drop on the floor is cleaned up immediately by at least one grateful dog.

We’ll have dinner at 8:00 tonight and I’m already hungry. It will just be six of us at the table, but that’s plenty! Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving and eats lots of good food today.

Red Beans and Rice

There are some really good mixes at the grocery store that let you make a big batch of red beans and rice in about 20 minutes. If you can boil water and open a cellophane package, you can make a passable version of red beans and rice.

But for my taste, the red beans and rice that they make at Popeye’s Fried chicken cannot be matched by a packaged mix. I don’t know how they make their version of it, but it rocks! Seriously, I love the stuff.

It would be worth getting a part time job at Popeye’s Fried Chicken just to learn how to make all the stuff they have on the menu. I love their dirty rice and their po’boys. This is the closest I have ever been to real New Orleans cooking and I love this stuff! Teach me!

Golden Oreos

As a kid we enjoyed a box of chocolate Oreos once in a great while as a treat. My mom liked cookies for things like long car rides, picnics and trips to the beach. But at home, we had dessert ever night after dinner, and it was usually either ice cream or pie.

I got out of the habit of having desserts and I rarely buy cookies. I guess that also reflects on how different my lifestyle is now as an adult. I rarely go on long car rides – stuck in bad traffic does not count! – I haven’t been on a picnic in years, and my one trip to the beach last summer was so short there was no food involved.

But today I bought a bag of the vanilla Oreos. They just seemed to be calling my name once I turned down that aisle in the grocery store. It was like a powerful “Buy me now!” magnet was pulling my arm toward the Oreos on the shelf.

I have to admit that I tore open the bag as I as unpacking the groceries. I just had to give them a taste and I’m happy to report that they are great!

Serious About a Diet

I have GOT to lose a few pounds. I am serious this time. I want to look nice this summer and I have to buy a new bathing suit. So I am going to lose 15 pounds before Memorial Day and I am going to look GREAT when I hit the beach! That is only 5 pounds per month between now and then – I just know I can do this!

Gingerbread

Found a new recipe for gingerbread cookies. The recipe I used last year did not turn out like I wanted. They cookies were too fluffy and soft, so they did not keep their shape after baking. They were so soft that the big ones fell apart when you picked them up. I hope this new recipe is more like the traditional gingerbread men that you can handle and even hang on the tree for decorations. We’ll soon find out.

Cooked Chicken

When I need cooked chicken for a recipe, I like to buy the rotisserie cooked chicken from the grocery store or Sam’s Club. The whole chicken is only about $5 or $6 and it tastes delicious! There is no way for me to duplicate that taste at home. When you consider that a whole, uncooked chicken can cost about $4 or $5, there is little you can do to chicken in preparation and cooking at home that will not add significantly to that price. So the rotisserie chicken is actually a bargain.
