E D is the New E R

Lately I have been noticing that on TV commercials, shows and even newscasts, what I have always called a hospital “Emergency Room” is now being called the “Emergency Department.”

I have a problem accepting this change. Is it really necessary?

Am I the only one who would watch the TV series “E R” every Thursday night in the 1990’s? That show would just not be the same if everyone had to call it “E D.” I really miss that show – it was something I looked forward to every Thursday night. The whole house knew to leave mom alone if E R was on the TV.

It might be more properly described as an entire department rather than a room, but does it REALLY matter? I think we are taking all this political correctness to an extreme. If it works, why mess with it?

In Search of New Music

Finding new music is getting hard to do because I don’t listen to the radio very much anymore. When I drove to work I used to listen to the radio. But now that I am out of work, I am limiting my driving to just the bare necessities. I stay home as much as I can to save money until I can find a new job.

When I am home, I don’t seem to think about turning on the radio very much. To be honest, I usually turn on the TV just so the newscasters can keep me company while I do my housework.

I do listen to the cable music channel, but their channels are not like the radio with a good mix of music, and you can’t skip the songs if you don’t like them.

I need to find a new way to hear new music – I am sure there are really good new groups out there – but how do they get their music to my ears?

Sing-a-longs

My grandfather used to play the piano at family gatherings and we would all sing along to a lot of fun songs. I loved the music class in school, too. Its a good thing most schools have some kind of music enrichment for kids.

I especially loved the times when we could sing songs in the round. Do you remember any of the songs like, “Row, row, row your boat?”

Top Radio Hits

The friends who are coming to my high school reunion are making a request list of songs that they want the DJ to play. They started with a list of personal music favorites that have memories for them.

But there were a lot more hit songs than what they remember. I decided to look up the list of Billboard’s Top 100 hits for each year we were in high school and make sure that the DJ plays at least the Top 10 songs from each year.

TV on DVD

For various reasons, over the years I seem to have missed some good TV shows.

Now I can make up for that by buying the set of those TV series on DVD. I see a lot of the TV shows are on DVD at WalMart and on Amazon. The prices are reasonable and you can buy the whole series so you don’t miss a single episode.

I am going to buy a few of those sets and watch the shows at my convenience, then maybe share them with family or friends who might have missed them, too.

Harry is Harriet

I heard a bout a new TV show called Harry’s Law. And I thought, great, another show about lawyers. We already have a bunch of shows, like Boston Legal, L.A. Law, The Defenders and others. So why do we need another legaldrama?

Well, this show is about Harriet who leaves a big corporate firm and sets up shop in the ghetto. Everyone calls her Harry and she is one tough cookie! I saw the pilot last week and I fell in love with it right away. I can’t wait to see the net episode, which is on tonight!

Kids Movies

There have been a lot of movies by Disney and other big companies for children. I rarely go to the movie theater to watch movies anymore, but I do enjoy renting a good movie on the weekend and watching it at home. I especially like to watch the children’s movies, but I have no desire to go to a theater with 300 screaming, crying brats all around me while I try to watch a movie. I like kids, but not other people’s spoiled kids. That’s not entertainment to me – that’s torture. LOL

Magazines

For some reason I have not been buying magazines. I used to buy magazines all the times. While standing in the grocery store check out line, the headlines of a few articles would sound interesting and I would not thing twice about picking up the magazine and tossing it on the conveyor to take it home and read it at my leisure.

Maybe the problem is “my leisure” seems to have disappeared. I rarely sit down with a soothing beverage and read anything any more.

Bozo

bozo

Do you remember watching Bozo on TV? There used to be a Saturday morning show for children, featuring Bozo the Clown. He would just say a couple of cute or funny lines and then show a cartoon, like Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner, Popeye, etc. It was a harmless way for children to be entertained in the morning while Mom and Dad took are of household chores.
