Computer error causes death

Life just isn’t fair when you lose someone you love to cancer but to lose them to a computer error is unbelievable.  That’s exactly what happened to a 27 year old man in England that was suffering from testicular cancer.  He was happy to get into an drug trial because he was told this would increase his chances of survival.  This man was engaged to be married.

A computer error caused him to be given double the amount of chemotherapy needed over a four month period.  This slowly poisoned him and he died.  There was another man also given an overdose of chemotherapy but he survived.

Computers are only as reliable as the person operating it and there should have been something written into what ever program written for this trial that would warn them that too much medication, chemotherapy or anything else that was to be given to patients had been ordered but it seems that the computer was what was ordering it.  Wasn’t a doctor paying attention?  I would have thought a doctor would have been checking behind what was being given.  A computer has no heart and soul and can’t think for itself like humans are supposed to be able to do.  The doctor over this should lose his license or be reprimanded at least.  What a shame.

Conductor was texting

Oh my goodness, I just heard that the conductor of the passenger train was sending text messages on his phone, missed a signal and that’s what caused the crash of the two trains.  The conductor was one of the people that lost their lives that day.

People should already know not to text and drive a car so why wouldn’t he have known better than to do it on a train with so many peoples lives are supposed to be in his hands and not his cell phone.  I really feel sorry for whoever he was sending text messages because they are probably going to feel responsible.  I would if I was the one that was texting him.  One things for sure, I sure as heck won’t text and drive anything.

Trains collide in California

A commuter train and a freight train collided in California killing at least 25 people.  How could this happen?  It’s obvious to me that someone somewhere was not paying attention and set these two trains on a collision course.  They think the number of injured is around 130 people.  The mayor of Los Angeles said this is the worst accident he has ever seen.  I’m sure that’s true for the approximately 250 firefighters that responded too.

Then less than an hour after that, a woman was killed in her car when it was hit by a train in Corona California.  The two had nothing to do with each other but what a coincidence,  I don’t think I would want to ride a train or go near the tracks in California.   My prayers are with the injured and the family of the many that lost their lives.

Thank God for ‘Tools for School’

I was having trouble getting my children all they needed for back to school between the necessary school uniforms and all the supplies.  Luckily my children qualified for help from ‘Tools for School’ that a lot of local businesses and churches have collected to help out families in need.

It really does my heart good to know that these items are offered to families in need without degrading them in the process.  I found out that if a child received discount or free lunch last year at school, the school contacts these families and offers them the supplies at no cost.  I love this community for all the help they give families in need.  I hope other states do the same.  I just want to thank everyone personally that has donated to ‘Tools for School’.

Poor baby Penguins

I just read about hundreds of baby penguins being washed up on shore in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. It is not common for them to find both adult and baby penguins there it said but this year has been a record year unfortunately. There are some who think it is from over fishing in the waters where they usually go to catch fish for themselves for food and others blame pollutants.

We have to start looking at what we are doing to our environment before we are the only animals left on our sickening planet. If just each of us would commit to one day a week of not driving, that alone would help with the air pollution. If each of us would commit to more and better recycling, that would help too. There is so much more we can do to help and I personally am going to start checking into what more I as an individual to do.

Buffet books

I didn’t know Jimmy Buffet wrote books along with some great music but he does.  I always enjoyed the tropical type music that he is so well known for producing so when I heard that he has written some books lately, I couldn’t wait to find one. I was thrilled to find one of his books called “A Salty Piece of Land” at my favorite used book stores for only $2.   I’ve really enjoyed reading it this past week. I’m glad that inside of the book it tells me the names of his other books that I will need to see if I can find too. I’m especially interesting in finding the one entitled “A Pirate Looks At Fifty”, if I can’t find it locally then I guess I could always look on-line and see if I can find it somewhere out there in cyber-world.

Friends like to give me vegetables out of their gardens to help me out.  I love it too.  My kids eat vegetables really good too.  Someone gave me a bunch of squash with a recipe.  I made it last night for dinner and we all loved it.  You have to try this.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  It’s New England Summer Squash:

  • 2lb (6 Cups) Sliced Yellow Summer Squash
  • 1/4 Cup Chopped Onion
  • 1 Can Cream of Chicken Soup
  • 1 Cup Sour Cream
  • 1 Cup Shredded Carrots
  • 1 8 oz Herb Seasoned Stove Top Stuffing Mix
  • 1 cup Melted Butter

Boil Squash and onion for 5 minutes and drain. Combine chicken soup and sour cream.   Stir in              shredded carrots. Fold in squash and onions. Combine stuffing mix and melted butter. Use a 12 x 7 casserole dish. Put half of stuffing on the bottom of the pan, then the squash mixture and top with remaining stuffing.  Bake at 350 degree for 25 – 30 minutes or until heated through.  Serves 6

My children’s father is in the military.  Sure I worry about him but at the same time, I am very proud to tell anyone that he is serving our country.  We may not have a perfect country but our country is seeing to it that his children are taken care of while he serves and for that, I appreciate everything that not only he is doing but what our country is doing for their service people.

Sometimes it’s not nearly enough to thank them for their what they are missing out on like seeing their children grow up but they knew this when they went in and we as a nation should respect them and their families and thank each and every one we know.
