Rude People

Have you ever been in a situation where you have to deal with rude people? I seem to have to deal with rude people almost every time I go out of my house lately. They are rude shoppers at the grocery store, like those who abuse the quick check out lane. You are only have to supposed to have a certain number of items in your cart but there always seem to be one person in the crowd who thinks their “just 5 or 6” extra items should still give them a free pass in the quick checkout lane.

I don’t know about you but I am going to start calling out these people. I am going to loudly suggest they learn to count and learn to find the right check out lanes in the future. I might even make a fake cell phone call and loudly describe the situation. Maybe make up a story about how I would have been right home to take care of the sick baby or to pick up someone who is going to be late now because of some inconsiderate person abusing the quick check out lane.

Start of NASCAR Season

It seems that everyone special to me is excited about NASCAR season starting today. The first race of the year is in Daytona tomorrow and there are viewing parties at all the sports bars Sunday.

I guess I will go and pretend to be interested. But frankly, watching a handful of cars run around in circles for a couple of hours, waiting for a wreck, is both morbid and boring.

Starting My Garden Seeds

This is a big day for me. I am starting the seeds for my vegetable garden. There are new seed packets at all the stores here and I bought a packet of Big Boy tomatoes and a packet of early peas. In a couple of weeks I will be able to set out the peas and start even more vegetables from seed.

This year I want to have several rows of fresh green beans and also summer squash and zucchini. I’m not sure anything else will grow easily in this soil, but I’ll try a few more things if I see something intriguing at the store.

Love is in the Air with Roses

happy VD roses

There is nothing like getting a bouquet of roses on Valentine’s Day. The candy is nice, jewelry is nice, but roses are just the most special. It may be silly to others, but I love getting roses for any reason. My own mother does not like fresh flowers because she say that they just die. I tell her that is their purpose and if they make someone happy then they have achieved a fulfilling life.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Sad Movies

Do you ever go to the movies and end up crying in the sad parts? I cry readily. I can’t help it. Anything that is really sad, especially when a main character dies, just chokes me up something awful.

I remember the first time I watched the movie, Steel Magnolias. It was such a great movie with a lot of very popular actresses. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but then when the main character collapsed at home, alone with her little boy, I just lost it. Oh my goodness – that movie made everyone in the theater cry. But it was a great movie and I try to watch it every couple of years – and I cry every time.

Pesky Old Groundhogs

My first memories of groundhogs are probably unusual unless you grew up on a farm. I did not grown up on my grandparent’s farm, but we did spend a lot of time up there visiting my mom’s parents. I believe that my sister and I were left on the farm for a couple of weeks when she gave birth to my youngest sister. I was not yet in school, so being gone from home for 2 weeks in October was not a big deal to anyone.

My grandparents had bought a huge property when he retired from the Navy. They had cows, pigs, dozens of cats who lived in the big barn, and two hunting dogs. My grandfather would often take the shotgun out to the fields and kill groundhogs. He said they were bigger pests than roaches and needed killing or they would destroy his crops.

So my experience with groundhogs is that they must be killed – not celebrated and expected to guide us on the next 6 weeks worth of weather conditions.

Happy Birthday Baby Brother!

Today I went to my brother’s Facebook page to wish him Happy Birthday and I found out that he has turned off comments so no one can wish him Happy Birthday on his wall. What is up with that? I can’t believe anyone wants to hide the fact that it is their birthday!

So, I’ll just post this birthday wish and instead. Happy Birthday, little brother!

Movie and Popcorn Tonight

It is cold and gloomy and a typical winter night. I just didn’t feel like going out in the cold to have fun with my girlfriends, so I rented a movie from Redbox and made a big bowl of popcorn.

The movie was called “Due Date.” It was a strange movie, but it had some funny moments. i think it was supposed to be a guy flick, without all the gratuitous violence and special effects. Anyway, I’m glad I watched it if for no reason other than being able to cross it off my list of movies to rent.

Tried Cooking Some Cajun Foods

My mom let me borrow her cookbook about Cajun foods. Its by a guy names Justin Wilson. Mom says he used to have a TV cooking show, kind of like the Cajun Julia Childs. Sorry I missed that – I think the old cooking shows are fun to watch – there are several on Youtube. In fact, there might be some Justin Wilson videos on Youtube.

The cookbook talks about the basics, like making a roue. I just made a batch of mock turtle soup. It will be ready to taste tonight when I get home – I can’t wait to try it!

The Year to Volunteer

This year I want to do something to give back to the community. I would like to volunteer for a local organization and help people. It’s been on my mind quite a while, and I think this is a good time to get up off the couch and do it.

I can see myself helping children or women who need job skills or someone to help them get through hard times. Just not sick people or an organization that hounds you for money all the time. I can teach kids to read, I can teach English to Spanish speaking children or women, or I can give a ride to job interviews or something that would help a single mom. Even babysitting. Does anyone have a suggestion of what organization I should contact?
