Stocks woes!!

Three major United States stock market indexes closed at their lowest levels in over a decade on Monday, amidst declining investor confidence and worries that the government will nationalize the banks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 3.41%, or 251.4 points, to end the day at 7,114.3, its lowest level since October 1997. The Standard and Poor’s 500 index lost 26 points or 3.5% to a level of 743.33, its lowest level since April 1997. The Russel 2000 Index of smaller companies dropped by four percent.

The three stock market indexes have been falling for the last six days. The Nasdaq Composite index lost 53.5 points, or 3.71%, closing at 1,387.7. However, the index remained above its November 20, 2008 low of 1316.12.

Despite the worries about the banks, bank shares climbed today. Bank of America shares rose by 3.2%, whilst Citigroup gained 9.7%. However, stocks for both banks have plunged more than 68% this year-to-date.

“People left and right are throwing in the towel. The biggest thing I see here is the incredible pessimism – the government is doing a lousy job of alleviating fears,” said Keith Springer of Capital Financial Advisory Services.

“Many investors simply can’t contemplate any more stock market risk in their portfolios. Sentiment in the market is very weak and negative,” said the senior market strategist for Invesco AIM, Fritz Meyer.

This is absolutely awful.  I really thought that once the American people saw all that the new president was doing to try and help the economy, they would turn this around.  Instead, just the opposite seems to be true.  How do they expect the economy to turn around if they keep bailing out of the stock market.  They’re hurting the economy by doing so.  If I had a bundle of money, I would start buying like crazy now.  I bet you could make a bundle IF you have the money to start investing but so many have lost so much that they’re giving up and to give up means more economic woes for the country.  Can’t they see that?

Well they were right

Here it is Friday and they’re starting to put up the dry wall in the kitchen.  I showed him some of my ideas and some of them he is incorporating into the job but he said that some of them were great ideas but then showed me better ways to do what I wanted.  That was pretty neat.  One of the things I wanted was since the walls are slanted on the bedroom sides was for him to build the closet and storage spaces in the lower parts of the bedrooms.  He had already come up with most of that but the built in drawers and desk, he hadn’t thought of.

In the living room, I wanted the drywall cut out to make shelves for pictures and things like that.  The shelves wouldn’t be deep enough for books or anything very deep but that’s okay.  He liked that idea too.  Since I could not read the blue prints, I couldn’t tell that most of my ideas, he had already planned into the apartment anyway but like I said, he also had not thought of some of the ideas I had too.  I am loving doing this.  I guess I’ll be shopping this weekend for cabinets, flooring, and all of the light and other fixtures too.

Here’s wishing you a Very Merry Christmas

It has been far too many years since I have seen the wonder in a child’s eyes on Christmas morning.  Santa has come and gone and left Little Joe the most wonderful gifts.  He and I made Christmas cookies for Santa on Christmas eve.  We all sat around the Christmas tree and sang Christmas carols, sipped hot chocolate and waited for time to go to bed before Santa passed us by.

Little Joe and I watched the Santa tracker on the computer and when he got over our state, it was off to bed without a whimper one.  He was so excited that I thought he would never go to sleep.  This was the first Christmas that Santa has been to our house for one of our own and it brought a joy here that I can’t begin to explain.

Santa brought Little Joe and battery operated 4 wheeler, a Lightening McQueen laptop educational computer, Mater bed set for his bed and more than I can write quite honestly.  Celeste even got somethings from Santa.  She got lots of clothes and boots and shoes, which she really needed.  She got more than she ever had before in her life she told me later.  The joy in their eyes was all the Christmas present I needed but

Celeste did get me something from her and Little Joe.  She had gotten one of those kits that you make a hand print of a child on plaster and wrote ‘We love you Nana’ on it.  I will treasure that for as long as I live.  It was absolutely the most perfect gift I could have ever asked for.  Here’s hoping that you and yours had a wonderful Christmas too.

Hey, wanna see my place?

I realized that all I do is talk about my Bed and Breakfast and haven’t shown you what it looks like.  Well I had to do a lot of work to get it turned into what I wanted but I loved every single minute.  I have already told you about the different rooms that I rent so there’s no need to repeat myself.

This picture was taken when we got an early snow before I got the Christmas decorations put up but I still think it’s a pretty picture of my place.  My new barn and animals are off to the right.  My garden is off to the left.  You can see the gazebo on the back of the wrap around porch.  Now you can see why there are deer, and other animals that come around the house.  Anyway, here it is.

Throwing a Halloween bash

We’re having a Halloween bash!!  The place is all decorated in spooky stuff, have a hay ride through a spook trail, bobbing for apples, and a best costume contest to boot.  It all starts at dark and the whole community is invited.  Well most of it anyway.

I’m Scarlet O’Hara of course, Grace is a clown, Celeste is Snow White and Little Joe is one of the seven dwarfs, Happy!!  He’s always smiling so Happy fits him perfect.  All the adults have to bring a big bag of candy to help with the candy we give out to the kids that come by Trick-or-Treating and other than that, the party is free.

Hey, if you’re in the mountains of North Carolina, stop by and see us.  I promise you’ll have a blast.  Don’t forget to come in a costume!!!

Fall Festival

Well with fall finally here, to kick off the weekend, we always have a fall festival here at the bed and breakfast.  Friday night starts off with a ‘pig pickin’ which is where we have a whole 75 pound pig barbecued and then there’s the usual fixins which are barbecue slaw, potato salad, baked beans and banana puddin’.  Some of the local musicians (and there are a lot of them in these hills) stop by for some pickin and grinnin.  I guess you could call it a mini fiddlers convention.

Then Saturday, some of the locals bring their arts and crafts for a craft fair here on the grounds.  We have everything from handmade quilts, home made jellies and preserves, fresh vegetables, and some of the most amazing paintings and crafts you have ever seen.  Anyone is welcome and many come from all around just to spend the day if I’m booked up which I usually am for this weekend.  This year wasn’t any different which surprised me.  There weren’t quite as many here just for the day as there usually are but that’s the only difference.

Today, we had a good old fashioned gospel singing.  There were choirs from several different churches here and again some locals just got up and sang solo.  The air was just crisp enough that I made hot spiced apple cider for everyone.  The whole weekend was a complete success not only in fun but financially for me and several in the community too with the arts and craft fair.  It’s one of my favorite weekends throughout the year.

Happy 78th Birthday Daddy

Well today is my fathers 78th birthday and I just wanted to wish him a ‘Happy Birthday”.  He’s doing pretty good considering he’s had 7 heart attacks.  He’s still just as ornery as ever but I still love him.  The funny thing is he has absolutely no idea just how important he still is to our family.  He thinks that because he can’t do all the things he used to be able to do that he isn’t of much use to us anymore.  Well he’s totally wrong about that.  We all still need him if for nothing else, to keep us all in line or keep trying to anyway.  Love ya Daddy!!!!

Weekend special

This weekend we decided to run a special to help bring in some business.  Our community always collects items for the local schools for the children in need of school tools.  I decided to continue what we started 3 years ago by offering half off on the weekend stay with the donation of a fully packed back pack for a child.

By fully packed I mean a pack of pencils, 100 sheets of loose leaf note book paper, pack of erasers, colored pencils and markers, 3 ring binder, pencil box or pencil pouch like goes in the binder and anything else they want to contribute like lunch boxes or other school supplies.

Last year, we collected 15 fully packed back packs with some of our patrons bringing more than one.  Everyone brought extra supplies.  Everyone that works for me also brought items for the kids.  It was wonderful to take them to the schools.  I hope this year is as successful as the last three.

New lap top computer

Remember me telling you about ordering a lap top computer?  Well it was not worth my time or money.  Now I have a real lap top and not a toy.  I went to Dell.com and got a referbished lap top and saved a bundle.  You can put in what you want or need and they will show you a list of available lap tops at the price range you choose.  Not too bad.  My computer geek guy that works for me helped me pick out just what I needed.

I just don’t know what I would do without him.  He is such a help to me and has shown me ways to save money on business expenses that I didn’t even think of.  To quote my favorite group, “I get buy with a little help from my friends!”

Surprise visit

There was a gospel group that had come to a local church to sing and decided to stop by here.  They had stayed here a few years ago and wanted to come by and say ‘Hi’.

They graced my patrons with a mini gospel singing.  They were even better than I remembered them being.  They sang a few of the old standards and some original songs the members had composed themselves.  The children were dancing and several of their parents were singing along with them.  It was a wonderful treat.

Most of the people even gave money to the group for them entertaining them even though there was no charge.  There are still some good people in the world, we just have to take the time to see them.
