Wait a Little Longer

My cousin in Afghanistan was told this morning that he has to wait a little longer to leave the war zone and head home. No explanation was given and no timetable provided. He is very depressed today.

I can understand not telling the men all the details for safety reasons, but I don’t think it is fair to promise them a day that they are leaving and then pull the rug out from under them. I guess the Army does not really care about morale and how the guys feel. I think they could have handled this a little differently, but why should they care? Who tells the Army they are doing things wrong?

Come Home Safely, Cuz

My cousin has been in Afghanistan for two years and he is finally about to come home. He has been posting on Facebook that he is counting down the days. I love Facebook for things like this – keeping in touch with loved ones – even when they are halfway across the world you can have instant communication with them.

He posted this morning:

“Packing some more stuff and shipping it out…six days and a wake-up.”

I’m so excited but also worried. I hope they remain vigilante and don’t let their guard down with thoughts of going home more important than paying attention to their surroundings.

Love you, Cuz – come home safely – 6 days and counting!

Oldies But Goodies

Listening to Spotify today I was in the mood for some oldies from the 1960’2 and 1970’s. There were some really great songs back in those days. Even though they were before I was born, my parents would listen to those old songs on the AM radio when we went on our Sunday drives. That was what we did for fun when I was just a kid – take the car and just head out for a long drive. If we were lucky we stopped someplace nice for a picnic or even some fast food at a new McDonald’s or something.

So for some nice memories and good times music, I’m listening to old Beach Boys songs today.

Start of NASCAR Season

It seems that everyone special to me is excited about NASCAR season starting today. The first race of the year is in Daytona tomorrow and there are viewing parties at all the sports bars Sunday.

I guess I will go and pretend to be interested. But frankly, watching a handful of cars run around in circles for a couple of hours, waiting for a wreck, is both morbid and boring.

Love is in the Air with Roses

happy VD roses

There is nothing like getting a bouquet of roses on Valentine’s Day. The candy is nice, jewelry is nice, but roses are just the most special. It may be silly to others, but I love getting roses for any reason. My own mother does not like fresh flowers because she say that they just die. I tell her that is their purpose and if they make someone happy then they have achieved a fulfilling life.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Pesky Old Groundhogs

My first memories of groundhogs are probably unusual unless you grew up on a farm. I did not grown up on my grandparent’s farm, but we did spend a lot of time up there visiting my mom’s parents. I believe that my sister and I were left on the farm for a couple of weeks when she gave birth to my youngest sister. I was not yet in school, so being gone from home for 2 weeks in October was not a big deal to anyone.

My grandparents had bought a huge property when he retired from the Navy. They had cows, pigs, dozens of cats who lived in the big barn, and two hunting dogs. My grandfather would often take the shotgun out to the fields and kill groundhogs. He said they were bigger pests than roaches and needed killing or they would destroy his crops.

So my experience with groundhogs is that they must be killed – not celebrated and expected to guide us on the next 6 weeks worth of weather conditions.

Happy Birthday Baby Brother!

Today I went to my brother’s Facebook page to wish him Happy Birthday and I found out that he has turned off comments so no one can wish him Happy Birthday on his wall. What is up with that? I can’t believe anyone wants to hide the fact that it is their birthday!

So, I’ll just post this birthday wish and instead. Happy Birthday, little brother!

Merry Christmas

merryxmas

This Christmas, I hope you and your family and friends are able to gather around and enjoy each other. The Christmas gifts and cooking the big meals are nice, but the holiday is really all about being with the people in your life who matter the most.

Wrapping Paper is Gone

There are a few rolls of leftover wrapping paper from last Christmas, but I cannot seem to find them anywhere. I checked the basement, I checked the hall closet, and I even poked around in the garage. I wonder who moved the wrapping paper and where would they have put it? I certainly hope they were not stupid enough to throw it away. Wrapping paper is expensive and it does not go bad unless it gets wet. I am about on the war path about this. I had better find that wrapping paper by this weekend or there will be drama in this house!

Hey Cammy

One of my friends from work was talking about her blog while we were in the kitchen taking our lunch break. I didn’t know Cameron even had a blog! I have told all my friends at work about my blog – but I bet no one even cares. My work friends are good people to work with, but once 5:00 roles around they are gone.
