Awesome Dinner

Thanks to my mom for cooking a most awesome Thanksgiving dinner today and having everyone come to her house. She did all the traditional foods, from a beautiful turkey to the best mashed potatoes in the world.

But my favorite was her sweet potato pie for dessert. I know most people like to cook pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, but in our family it is tradition to have sweet potato pie. That’s what my dear grandmother would fix, and my mother has carried on with that tradition. And I expect my sisters and I will, too.

Crazy Shopping Day

Every Saturday I do my grocery shopping. Its not that I like to do it on Saturdays, but most nights after work I am too tired to deal with it. So, reluctant to admit I am becoming a creature of habit, I headed out to the grocery store this morning.

OMG! What a ZOO! I totally forgot that this weekend is the weekend before Thanksgiving. It was four times as many people in that grocery store. I realized how crowded it was and gave up after 10 minutes in the store and hadn’t made it through the produce department yet.

I’ll go back later tonight – I can’t stand crowds and am not willing to spend 2 hours shopping for my groceries today.

Frost on the Pumpkins

pumpkin carvings
Bought a pumpkin last night at the local church pumpkin patch. It was only $10 and I like to carve a pumpkin for Halloween even though there’s no kids in the house. I just think it is part of the fall celebration and its fun.

If my yard got more sun I could plant some pumpkin seeds myself and have a nice garden. But there’s no sun – too many trees. Then again, the shade from the trees is nice and helps keep my house cooler in the summer. So its a trade-off.

It Was a Joke

One of my friends called me this morning and said that on her way to work she saw some nut jump off the bridge into the river. I was horrified at the thought that someone would do that and very sympathetic to my friend who witnessed that act of desperation. I told her how sorry I as that she had to see that today, then she laughed and said, “April Fool’s!”

Happy Birthday Lil Bro

My brother is 10 years younger than me and today is his birthday. It is easy to remember his birthday, it is the same date as mine, just a different month, minus 10 years.

So, Happy Birthday, Spencer!

No Shadow – Yay!

The groundhog did not see his shadow this morning. That is great news!

According to the Groundhog Day legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow when he first comes out of his hole this morning, the shadow scares him so badly that he runs right back into his hole and stays there for 6 weeks.

But if he does not see his shadow, he stays outside and we all get to enjoy an early Spring.

So, we are hoping for an early Spring and the groundhog is saying that we will have one!

What a great day yesterday

Jayce and I had a great day all day yesterday.  First we went to his brothers for a cookout.  His brother and sister-in-law are both really good cooks.  His brother grilled the meat and some of the veggies and his wife made potato salad and the desert.  It was all absolutely delicious.  I ate way too much too.

Well then it was off to watch the fireworks.  His brother and his family came along and there’s nothing like seeing the look in a child’s eyes as they watch fireworks.  What truly amazed me was that their father made sure to tell them what we were celebrating and why.  He’s a really great Dad.  He didn’t want the kids to think that all the 4th of July was about was cooking out and fireworks.  I thought that was just too wonderful of him.

Remember to thank a veteran this weekend

Memorial day is a wonderful holiday.  It’s where we honor veteran and the families of veteran that didn’t make it back home.  So while you’re having your cookouts this weekend, remember to say a prayer for our troops that are in harms way today and be thankful for those that passes before them that gave us the security and freedom to have the cookouts in the first place.

Happy Memorial Day!!

Planning a party for the kids

I told you that Jacey’s brothers kids have a birthday coming.  Well they are planning a special birthday party.  They were thinking about a pool party since they do have a swimming pool with a cover on it that heats the water. That way the kids won’t freeze their hineys off. I told them about this web site that is a great help in party planning.  They have great suggestions on theme parties, Fathers Day parties and other types of holiday parties.  I use them all the time when I’m trying to plan a party because they have some great ideas.

Not only do they have great ideas, they have recipes too for things like a graduation cake, Fathers Day cupcake decorations and much more.  They think of all the things you wouldn’t or don’t sometimes.  They will tell you the best wine for your party, decoration ideas, menu ideas, and even decorating tips  for the party.    I have used them for bridal showers, baby showers, birthday parties and just about any type of party I was planning.  I had a great New Years Party thanks to them.  Everyone was ranting and raving saying I was such a good hostess and threw a great party.  I just smiled and said “Thank You!”

Time for some more humor

My mother told this one at our Mothers Day celebration.  Now if you knew my mother, you would realize just how funny this is because my mother never tells jokes in the first place and well, this one is kind of funny was the second surprise to all of us.  See what you think?

Little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.00.

When the postal authorities received the letter to God , USA , they decided to send it to the President. The president was so amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The president thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill and sat down to write a thank-you note to God, which read:

Dear God:

Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Washington D.C. and they took $95.00 in taxes.  Next time please send it straight to me so they won’t take out all those taxes.
