Slow computer

Looks like I might have to get a new laptop soon. I bought this one for a bargain price of $300 in a Christmas sale so I’ve gotten my money out of it. The one I have now is so slow that I’ve nearly given up on taking it anywhere when I have to write and I’m away from home. It’s senseless. I have to wait for quite a while for things to load.

I’m going to have it gone through first by a pro and see what they say, because it isn’t that old and it’s got plenty of space on it. Still…I’m not happy with it at all. More money going out no doubt. 🙁

A small vacation

I sort of took a break for a few days. Just to remember how it felt without answering machines, cell phones, internet, and all of that. I even took out my rotary phone and hooked it up.

My family and close friends knew what I was doing, and said I indeed needed the break. I actually wish it would have been longer now. I do have time off to do this and I really want to.

So…if I disappear again for a bit, this is the reason. I am “roughing it” and know that everyone should do this, just to remember that all we have might not be there one day.

Moving into a new place

Guest post of the week by Deangelo Spencer

When I moved into my new place I was really excited to get it all fixed up. I wanted to get totally new curtains and floors for the main rooms and I knew I had to have all the bathrooms retiled. I just wasn’t sure what to do about the Satellite Star Internet and the security system…did I need them both? Well, I sprang for them and now I’m really glad – turns out it’s all the extra technology here that really makes me love this house. I had no idea how much I would use the surround sound or the intercom system but they’re things I deal with every day and I love it! I wouldn’t have it any other way and I can thank my brother Ted for encouraging me to go totally high-tech with this place. Being a homeowner is tough, that’s for sure, but there’s something about knowing it’s my house and I can do whatever I want with it that really gets me excited. It feels so adult!

Computer troubles

I’ve got to have my computer geek nephew look at my PC and figure out why it’s running way too slow. I’ve been having problems with my server for the last couple months, and they say it’s not them. Of course they are going to say that, right? I mean, as long as they get their money they don’t care what problems I am having. Hence me thinking about changing my internet service. This computer should not be running so slow, nor should I have problems waiting forever for pages to load. While my sister in law and I were looking at dresses for her, I totally froze up. This isn’t good, I don’t think. She suggested that I have her son look at it, so as soon as he can get over here, I’m sure he will try and fix the problem if possible. Gotta love that kid!! 🙂

Old dog new tricks?

My little brother is still trying to teach me about web hosting. I sometimes am a really slow learner when it comes to the tech stuff pertaining to the computer. Hence, I have been reading up on and studying everything he has been kind enough to keep repeating to me, writing notes for me and also giving me all sorts of little tips and what not, for basic advertising for my small business that if I ever learn, will indeed boost my income considerably.

Recently I’ve been checking out and learning about web hosting ratings. Apparently from what I have gleaned from this issue, is that it is a pretty important part of this whole process. To be honest, it is really helpful and is written in a way that I, even not being a computer geek, can understand.

While looking at various options, prices and tech support, I being the person I am…clicked on Fat  Cow Green Hosting. Reasons? Well, in all honesty I liked the silly name. Then I got to reading about the ratings, the fact that there was unlimited disk space and traffic, lots of free stuff, like domain and set up and also it was inexpensive…right in my budget range! With the help of my little bro, I should be able to figure all this out. Time will tell. As I have said in previous posts, I’m learning. Slowly but surely and finding all of this quite interesting, if truth be known!

The Aunts.

I have two Aunts that I am called to visit occasionally. It’s more like a summons than an invitation though. Don’t get me wrong, I love them both dearly and have some really great childhood memories with them, but sometimes these summons are rather scary. I never know what I’m walking into when I get there. This time it was about my financial future. Mainly in stocks. Well, not mainly but I also discovered The Aunts had really been busy learning the computer when they started talking about online trading.

I must tell you that I know absolutely nothing about any of these fancy words they were using to take care of my financial future, but it was kind of interesting to hear these little elderly ladies sounding like CEO’s of major corporations. Stock trading I found really interesting, since one of the Aunts had invested in a cereal company’s stock years ago and I must admit, it has done very well. So that subject I indeed listened to.

One can only drink so much tea while listening to The Aunts and also looking at financial reports, and also worrying about in one or the other were sick and “preparing me” for the news. I grabbed a beer out of the fridge, (They knew I was coming and prepare of course…lol!) and sat back down at the table to hear more about IRA accounts, since they both were on a roll! 🙂

Little girl games

My niece has been staying with me for a few days, because we had some major storms and a tornado pass through. I have power now, but it was out for sometime. My sister doesn’t have power yet, as a tree landed across the power lines by their home. It’s kind of strange having a young one around the house again, and to be honest, I didn’t really know how to entertain her. We exhausted the dressing up in my clothes game, so I gave her my laptop to use. Heck, she can use the computer better than I can…which isn’t really saying much since I’m not that great at it. LOL! She showed me this site link that I guess all the girls her age are using.

I guess girl games are what she and her friends are into now. It’s pretty cool for younger girls. Lots to do on the site and of course I had to participate in what she was doing on the laptop.

I can’t say that I was thrilled about the kissing games on the site though. Seems to me that young people are growing up too fast and 8 year old’s don’t need to learn kissing at that age, but then of course, it seems harmless enough as long as she doesn’t get all boy crazy while she is here. I’ll have to make a mental note to ask my sister to keep an eye on my niece. She’s already a little knock out, but doesn’t need to grow up quite so fast.

Have to love a geek!

My little brother has been teaching me about web hosting and to be honest, at first I thought it would be boring but it isn’t at all. Actually it’s pretty interesting and quite helpful. Or will be for my on the side job I’ve been thinking about doing. I make all kinds of crafts and love to do this in my spare time. Everyone said I should sell the things that I make. Perhaps I should.

I don’t have the time or the money to do this on my own and my geeky kid brother has been telling me and showing me how easy it is to have someone else do this for me. There are a bunch of web hosting types available and from what I have learned so far, it’s pretty simple with a little bit of help to pick one that suits your needs. Plus the people work with you and so it’s virtually a no brainer…at least for me.

He showed me Green Hosting that is inexpensive, covers exactly what I would need for a small business and get what I pay for. Like I said, all this is really interesting also. I never thought I would be into something like this, but I need the extra money, as everyone does in these terrible economic times. I’m willing to try this and see what happens.

Music and Videos

I’m a great fan of You Tube. I love to find the music I haven’t heard in a long time and watch the videos that remind me of the concerts I used to go to. Lately my geeky little brother has been telling me about video converter software. Now, I have no clue what he is talking about, but he indeed does and if he says I would love this, I no doubt would.

I’m told by my little Geek that he could do You Tube to video converter and I can watch and listen to what I want to all the time, instead of having to keep going back and typing in what I want and then finding it and clicking. I guess from what he says, it saves lots of time and is a pretty cool thing. Me of course, as stated in previous posts and totally ignorant about all this tech stuff.

The great thing, is he can download free You Tube downloader and wella…it would be done and he said it was really easy. When I hear the word, “free” that is always a good thing too! So I’m going to trust my little brother and see what he’s going to do to my faithful computer so I have my videos and music. This should be rather interesting. I might even learn a thing or two about being a geek myself. Okay…that is pushing it, but one never knows!

A very nice date

I went on my date with Michael and I was quite unprepared for him to know exactly where I wanted to go, as he lives out of State and I didn’t know he was familiar with the city I live near. Heck, I’m not even really that familiar with it, to be honest. When we got to the restaurant I had wanted to go to because of the food they served,  I discovered we needed reservations, or would have to wait. He gave the lady his name and we got a table right away.

I was curious as to how he knew directions, hours, the fact we needed reservations, and darn near everything about this city, if he hadn’t been familiar with it. At first he joked a bit and said things like, “psychic”, “magic” and what not. But then he admitted that he had got on the computer and looked it up in what he liked to call a city’s local yellow pages. I had never even knew a service like this existed.

Our date went really well. The food at the restaurant was delicious and our conversation was just the same as it had been when we last had gotten together. We’ll see what happens. When I got home,  I did however, get on my computer and look at the link he had given me, so find out what it was all about what he had been talking of, and was impressed with it. If I need any information for local businesses or darn near anything one could find in the yellow pages, I can just go online. I hate looking up things in the phone books. My eyes aren’t as they used to be, and it is a pain in the butt. All I have to do is type in what I want and it comes up. This I love a lot! We’ll  have to wait and see about Michael.  To be continued… 😉
