Working in the garden

I have been working in my garden a lot lately. We may not have had much rain, but the weeds are still growing exponentially. At least it seems that way. I have some really great herbs growing and will have plenty to dry. I prefer to use them fresh, but once the growing season is over, I will have to harvest what is left and either replant some into the kitchen containers or dry them. It isn’t very difficult to do. You just cut them and then use string to wrap them into bundles. Then you hang them up. After they dry out, you can bottle or bag them according to how you like to store them. It’s easy peasy!

Working on the Garden

I have been working in my garden and getting the soil ready for planting. I also bought some stuff for the kids to plant of their own that I know they are going to love. There are these bio dome gardens and such that are designed towards kids. One is a butterfly garden and there is another that is a carnivorous garden with  Venus Fly Trap, Sundew Plant, Hooded Pitcher Plant, Purple Pitcher Plant and others in them. The boys will adore that one. I cannot wait for them to arrive in the mail. I would have bought it at the Tractor Supply near the house but they were out and the Walmart near me didn’t even have them. I am certain they will come in soon though.

Geodesic dome greenhouse

I am thinking of building one of these geodesic dome greenhouses. I was going through the materials that I have put aside and will only have to actually purchase a few things to make it work. The main thing would be the vsiqueen sheeting. Fortunately, it is relatively in expensive. I found several different models to choose from and I think this picture best represents what the finished product will be.

I will put it in a half shaded area similar to this one and the Orchids I want to grow in it should do well. I will not start building until I do a little more research and make sure that it is exactly what they need to thrive.

I hope to have many different breeds of Orchid, with lots of colors. I was reading about cross breeding them over the last few months in preparation and I am encouraged by what I have read.

The basic premess is not that difficult and I do have a green thumb, so I don’t anticipate any problems. I will try to remember to post pictures of them once I get it going really well. Wish me luck!

Winter is coming to a close

However, it is not soon enough for me. I really am happy that the cold weather seems to be letting go it’s hold of us. Not that we wont have more later, but for now a few nice days are definitely a plus. I think I will do a little yard work. There are a few projects that I would to get started on before spring arrives.

I am going to build a new green house for a crop of Orchids. I love Orchids and I plan to try my hand at growing them this year. I have always wanted a small green house to grow delicate blooms like that in, so I will build it myself. I found a bunch of different ways to build one with used materials and be totally green. No pun intended. *smiles*
