Today we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country and who are still with us after having served America in our armed forces. Thank you to all our veterans for protecting us and preserving our freedoms.
Too Much for Chips
Just noticed the price of a bag of potato chips while I was shopping today. At the Kroger a bag of Lays chips is $4.99. Not even gourmet chips – just regular chips in the bag.
I’m astonished. This bag is nothing more than one potato that has been sliced very thin, tossed in hot oil for a couple of minutes, salted and then tossed into an oversized thin foil bag. When you think about it, the bag is 80% air. So what on earth can justify charging almost five bucks for one bag of chips that will last an average family just one day? This amount of money for this little bit of snack food is crazy!
Bite My Tongue
Why am I so hostile lately? It seems like I can’t find anything nice to say to anyone. I make comments on Facebook and get people all riled up. I send IMs and people just want to argue. I’m scared to send an email to anyone – I’ll probably just get my head bitten off for offending someone.
I’m going to just bite my tongue for a few days until my mood improves. After all, if you can’t say anything nice, you should not say anything at all.
Grazing at Sams Club
I only go shopping at Sams Club about once every two months. I just don’t need or want mega sized quantities of most household goods and foods. But sometimes the savings is big enough to make it worth going and buying 10 times more than what I would get at the local Kroger.
Today I went to Sam’s on my lunch break. I was surprised to find a lot of people giving away free samples of food at the end of every aisle. I ended up dining on large slices of pizza, chicken nuggets, ham and cheese on croissant, and meatballs. I was going to do a drive-thru to pick up my lunch on the way back to work, but I had so much free sample food that I wasn’t hungry.
Baby Shower
My girlfriend Jenny, is expecting a baby next month. She knows she will be having a baby girl. I think it is pretty much standard in maternity care to find out the baby’s gender about 4 months along.
Some of the girls from work want to have a baby shower for her. I was going to buy a gift for her anyway, so if we are going to have a baby shower, I guess I need to get busy and buy that gift for her.
Quick Dinner
Last week while grocery shopping, I picked up something new. I came across some precooked meats that you can microwave and heat up in only 5 minutes. The selection included pot roast, beeftips, and pork roast. They also had a section of mashed potatoes in little plastic tubs that heat up in 4 minutes.
I thought they might be nice to keep on hand in case I want a fast dinner, and they were reasonably priced. So I bought one of each and have kept them in the refrigerator.
Tonight I am dog-tired and hot. I decided that I didn’t want to heat up the kitchen with the oven or stove. I pulled out the microwave tubs of beef tips and potatoes, and had dinner ready in 5 minutes. They were tasty and fast – and a bargain.
Another Day in Paradise
At the convenience store the clerk was chit chatting with the guy in front of me. The clerk asked the guy how he was doing. That’s a normal type of question from a casual encounter.
The guy answered, “Just another day in paradise.”
I thought that was a funny response.
Book or Movie First?
Ever since I was in grade school and learned to read, I’ve loved to read. I read books all the time, from the classics to those nasty romance novels that are good for a quick read on the bus or while baking on a beach lounge chair.
The Twilight books and movies caused a dilemma for me. Should I read the book first or watch the movie first? I wanted to maximize my reading or viewing enjoyment and not be disappointed with the second one.
Any suggestions from someone who has already done both as to whether I should read the book or watch the movie first?
Color My World
Do grown ups ever get to use crayons and color for fun? Or is that a big part of your creative childhood that has to get left behind after you reach a certain age?
I see crayons on the store shelves as part of the back to school push of products. I would love to buy a big box of crayons and spend a rainy afternoon coloring. Don’t laugh!
Touch of Homesick
My niece is a bit of a drama queen and frequently complains about feeling homesick when the family goes out of town to visit relatives or friends.
I have been away from the DC area (where I grew up) for several years now, and I have to admit that every once in a great while I feel a touch of homesickness. But I know in my heart that I do not live there anymore and there’s no “going home.” In fact, the house where I grew up was sold to another family within months of my high school graduation and the new people remodeled it. So that’s a closed chapter of my life.
Now it’s on to greater adventures, here in Nashville and beyond!
