Tick Follow Up

The place on my back where the tick bit me is still red and swollen. What is totally weird is that it must have bit me in two other places before crawling over to the spot where i found it and pulled it off. I have these large red bumps on me that itch like crazy. But, no fever and no other symptoms. So i have been putting rubbing alcohol on them and I took a couple days of antibiotics – to be on the safe side.

So I am OK and much more vigilant about checking my dogs and myself each night for ticks.

Tick!

Tonight I came in from mowing the lawn and trimming the bushes in front of the house and took a shower. I was rudely surprised to find a blood sucking tick on my back, just above my jeans belt. I was able to reach it and douse it with alcohol, then pulled it off. The whole area where that little bastard had latched onto me is red and swollen. I’m glad I found it right away and got it off of me. But I am worried that I might have some type of infection at the bite site. Guess I have to see if it gets any worse and then maybe go to the doctor for some meds.

Valentine, Oh Valentine

I love romance! How glorious that we have a holiday dedicated to sweethearts and lovers all over the world!

Ever since I was in high school, Valentine’s Day has been a wonderful day of flowers, chocolates and special dinners with candles, flirting and memorable nights. I love Valentine’s Day!

Mr. Groundhog Predicts an Early Spring

Nashville’s sky was covered with snow heavy winter clouds this morning, so there was no way a groundhog could have seen his shadow.

I know that the groundhog in Pennsylvania supposedly saw his shadow up there, but let’s be honest. Pennsylvania weather is nothing like Nashville weather. I bet on any given day the temperatures here are at least 6 – 8 degrees warmer than anywhere in Pennsylvania. We’ll have spring before Pennsylvania every year and this year I bet we have spring weeks before the northern states.

Monday Blues

Although I admit I stayed up too late last night and didn’t get much sleep, I am having a bad case of the Blues today. Never have been a big fan of Mondays, and the alarm clock was not my friend this morning when it jarred me awake. It was still dark outside when I got dressed and left the house, and the day is so overcast and grey that I don’t think the sun is going to come out today at all. So it is a dark and gloomy day, a boring day at work doing inventory, and I’m just not a perky girl today.

Yule Logs

Poking around the cable on demand, I found a cool feature that I did not know about. Comcast has a channel at Christmas that is a video of burning yule logs. They play soft Christmas music in the background and there are no commercials. This was really nice to find – I hope they do it again next year.

Whats for Dinner

Seem like in the winter time I am craving beef. I want pot roasts, chili, steaks, swiss steak, beef stew. It all sounds very comforting and the taste is so much more satisfying in the cold weather and shorter days than the fish and chicken that is featured on my dinner menus during the summer. There used to be a commercial narrated by a deep, Texas drawl that says, “Beef. It’s what’s for dinner.” That is so true for me this week!

Get Those Cards Mailed TODAY

The Postal Service says that today is the deadline for getting first class mail delivered by Christmas. So I have to hurry up and get the last of my Christmas cards signed and addressed. I only have about 5 or 6 left to do, but I was so tired last night I could barely keep my eyes open, so I did not get to finish.

Thank goodness the post office is only a few miles from my house and they accept mail up until 9:00 pm. So I will make the deadline and my friends will get their cards on time.

Scrolling Typos

A lot of the TV channels have adopted the scrolling text at the bottom of the screen to make viewers aware of breaking news and alerts.

Years ago, viewers would have to endure complete interruption of their preferred show for a talking head to read the script of breaking news on camera. But now, a lot of the breaking news is just a few words scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

It must be stressful programming in just the right words to scroll across the screen. It’s like having to write headlines as a teaser to get your attention but also to add just enough vital information to give viewers a snapshot of the situation.

At its worst, the scrolling words contain a typo, which broadcasts to the entire world that someone is not smart enough to spell the name correctly or never got enough education to recognize the difference in the meaning of words, such as “sum” versus “some.”

How Much Turkey?

If you are cooking on Thursday, how do you know you will have enough turkey? I just always picked up a big turkey and figured that a big one would work out. They all seem to be about the same size in the grocery store anyway!

But if you really need to know how many pounds of turkey you need to buy, here’s what I found on the Internet this morning:

If you need only enough turkey to make it through Thanksgiving dinner: buy between ¾ pound to 1 pound per person.

If you want enough leftovers for the long weekend: buy 1 pound (or slightly more) per person.
