Hope for Peace in Egypt

There have been rallies and riots in Egypt’s major cities, with several deaths and many injuries. From what I can deduce, there are thousands, or perhaps tens of thousands, of mostly young men demonstrating for the removal of Egypt’s president and the establishment of a new democracy. They are blaming all of their country’s economic problems on the president and his closely held elite group who have been running the country.

I truly hope that the riots subside and that the citizens of Egypt see good changes come about when this president either steps down or is defeated in the next election, and that no one else gets hurt in the process.

Donating Long Hair for Wigs

My sister has donated her long hair to an organization called Locks of Love. From what I could find online, this organization uses the donated hair to make wigs for children who have cancer and are losing their natural hair because of the chemo treatments that they must undergo.

There is also a program sponsored by the hair products company, Pantene, called Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Their program uses the donated hair to help women who are fighting cancer.

I think both organizations are worth checking out they have good web sites with information on how long the hair must be, where to send it, etc.

Jimmy Fallon is FUNNY!

I knew who Jimmy Fallon is because I used to watch him on Saturday Night Live. Then he ended up getting a late night show – it comes on at 2:00 am – the latest late show on the schedule.

Every once in a while I can stay up extra late and not worry about having to get up at 5:00 am to go to work. Those are the only times I can watch the Jimmy Fallon Show. But I really enjoy his show when I do have the opportunity. He makes me laugh out loud, and I love the variety of guests that he has on the show to talk and play games with him.

My Snow Woman

We had enough snow that I could roll up a few big snowballs and make this snow woman. I couldn’t figure out what to use for arms, so I decided to grab some things from the kitchen. She’s my Aunt Jemima snow woman.

Dentist Appt

Tomorrow morning I have to see the dentist. It’s called a cleaning appointment, but they are really looking at the condition of my teeth and gums to see if I need any repairs.

I don’t think they will find any cavities, but I am worried about gum health. They say that almost everyone over 30 years old gets gum disease. I don’t know why this is and why they can’t prevent it or cure it. It seems like they just look for it and then put you on a long term treatment regime and make a lot of money from it. I think I will ask my dentist about that when I see him the morning – why is there no cure?

Too Full

Sometimes I go out and order way too much food for lunch. If it tastes really good, it is really hard to stop eating before it is all gone. But I should really stop eating when I’m full and not force myself to clean my plate.

In fact, in some cultures, it is unflattering to eat everything on your plate. If  you don’t leave a little on your plate they think that you cannot afford to eat properly, like a street urchin.

But then again, I really don’t like to waste food. I don’t want to get fat and I try to have a healthy variety of foods. And as long it this gorging is just once in a while and not a regular thing, I think it will be OK.

Larry vs Piers

For many years I would watch Larry King do his show on CNN when I was not interested in the drivel on primetime network TV. I always thought that Larry was a good host and that he asked very interesting questions that would draw out the guest. I was sorry to see him retire – I even watched his last show and got choked up at all the people who participated in the tribute.

Now Piers Morgan has taken that slot on CNN. He is a very good conversationalist. His style is very different from Larry’s, and that is to be expected. I watched his first show with Oprah and learned a lot about Oprah that I did not know. I missed the Howard Stern interview, but tonight the guest is Condoleezza Rice and I am enjoying this interview very much.

Lunch with the Girls

A lot of people did not have to work today because it is Martin Luther King’s birthday. I know the banks are closed, so are the government offices and the post office. But it is another good excuse for retailers to have a sale or special promotions.

So, a bunch of us who did have to work decided to get together for lunch. Thanks to my girlfriend, Wendy, for having the idea and sending out the invitations. We had 14 women show up for our holiday lunch. That was great fun!

Cell Phone Bath

Yes, I did it. I dropped my Blackberry in the water. I don’ know what I was thinking. I was talking to my sister and trying to wash up the pots and pans from dinner, and the phone slipped off my shoulder. It dropped straight down into the soapy sudsy water with a horrible plunk.

Of course I grabbed it right out of there, but I don’t kno if it can be saved. I heard from friends that if you take a wet phone apart and put it in a Ziploc bag filled with raw white rice that it will dry out and work the next day.

I sure hope that is right and we’ll find out in a few hours. I’ve gone all day with my phone and I’m miserable. But then, I can’t blame anyone but myself.
