Winter Olympics

My favorite winter sport is ice hockey, although I am not much of an ice skater myself. As I have so much trouble just skating around an indoor ice rink on my own, I have a deep admiration fro the men who play professional ice hockey and not only do they skate like mad men across the ice, they also chase and whack a small black puck, shooting it with a deadly accuracy into a 6 foot wide net guarded by a large, well padded man wielding a big stick.

I was able to watch some of the Olympics hockey over the weekend, as well as some of the luge events, the downhill skiing and even curling. I’m not interested at all in the figure skating, but a lot of the other winter sports are interesting to watch the competitors and to listen to the announcers as they make comments and describe the unfolding events.

NCIS Marathon

Today is a holiday, too. President’s Day. Schools are closed, stores are having winter sales, my office is closed – so are the post office, the banks and all government offices.

But it’s snowing and I don’t want to take a chance on wrecking my car on the slick roads. So I’m staying home and cleaning house, playing a few spades games online, and watching the NCIS marathon on the USA cable channel. It’s a good day!

Congrats to the Saints!

The Saints won their very first Superbowl ever! It was a great game – close score and well played by all. Just one or two problems with a controversial call and a player who was penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior. I think he was just carried away with the moment, but that’s no excuse for spearing a guy who is down on the ground.

We were invited to a party but decided to stay home and watch it. I’m not feeling well and wanted to be able to go lie down if I started feeling badly. Can’t do that at someone else’s house. But I stayed up through the game and really enjoyed seeing the Saints win.

Happy Birthday Elvis Presley

If Elvis had not died, today would have been his 75th birthday. It makes me sad to think that he missed so much by overdosing on the drugs. I wish he had gotten the rehab and correct medical help that he needed in his last years of life while he suffered so badly from addiction and depression. It was such a waste of talent for him to die young.

Happy Birthday, Elvis.

New Years Eve

Tonight is going to be a quiet celebration at home for New Year’s. I have been invited to a couple of parties, but to be honest, I don’t fell up for a lot of socializing and partying. I think I would like to be at home in the peace and quiet, and maybe relax with a good movie and some internet surfing or games. I have great hopes for the New Year. I just don’t want to start my year in a crowded room with a lot of drunk people.

Guitar Legend – Steve Cropper

There are a dozen guitar legends in the rock and roll arena, but this is one of the first that I found and I’ll always love his music. He only plays a few charity events and special shows anymore, but I would love to see him on stage. Everyone playing with him looks like they are having a blast.

It’s More Fun When You are Winning

Both of my favorite football teams are having rally bad seasons this year. The Titans have not won a single game. The Redskins lose games to the worst teams in the NFL.
It’s not much fun being a football fan this year.

State Fair Final Day

The State Fair was running all week but it has rained every single day. It has killed the fair attendance is everyone is mad that the fair is not making any money.

I’ve been to the Tennessee State Fair three times and each time it was a disappointment. Everything costs way too much money and it’s smaller than the county fairs that we had last month.

People are saying that today will be the last day of the State Fair being held in Nashville. I suppose they should start finding a new home for it – like Murfreesboro or Dickson. And they should make accomodations for most of it being under cover so that a week of rain doesn’t ruin everything.

I’m more interested in going to the county fairs anyway – they are so much bigger and a better value for my entertainment dollars.

Baseball Fan

Baseball is still a great family sporting event. I would love to take my future kids to a baseball game.

this little girl has a great daddy. Look at his totally involvement in her happiness and achievements – no concerns about the loss of the souvenir ball. It was all about his daughter!

Twilight DVD

All around town the Twilight DVD is running between $22 and $29, even though it was in theaters over 10 months ago. I kept thinking the price would come down to the $12 – $15 range at Wal Mart for most dvds, but I guess it was such a blockbuster hit that no one feels inclined to reduce the price if they can milk it a little longer at the higher price. I even checked Amazon for a better price, but no go.

One advantage to the Amazon web site is that they do list used dvds and used cds through resellers. I found a new Twilight dvd for $12 and the movie score on cd for under $20 together, including shipping. So all I had to do was wait 3 days for it arrive in the mail instead of driving to the local store and having the privilege of taking it home in hand.
