George Lindsey

One American icon has passed away. George Lindsey who played the part of Goober on the “The Andy Griffith Show” died at the age of 83. He will be missed by millions of Americans who loved him and the characters he played on T.V. and the movies.

Lindsey also starred on the long-running T.V. show “Hee-Haw” as well as numerous movies. I hope he will rest in peace.

Raising the Georgia

There are plans being made to raise the CSS Georgia. The ship has been on the bottom of the Savannah River for nearly 150 years. Officials want to raise the ship because it stands in the way of dredging machines needed to deepen the channel. The estimated cost will be about 14 million dollars.

The Georgia was a confederate iron clad used to protect the harbor near Fort Jackson.
The ship was scuttled by its crew in order to prevent its capture by Union Troops. Officials are still unclear as to what will happen to the ship when it is raised, but many believe it will end up in a museum somewhere.

The latest in science

There is a new plan out there that is as far fetching as it seems in reality as well as in its imagination. A group of tycoons are planning to mine asteroids for their valuable minerals. They plan to catch asteroids and squeeze them dry of their metals which will then be sent back to earth.

The plan is futuristic but some believe the technical difficulties can be overcome. The plan has large start-up costs and will take many years before it happens but it may well work.

Should the penny stay or go

Many Americans have different opinions on whether the penny should stay or go. The Canadians are in the process of eliminating their penny because it costs too much to make. It costs about a penny and a half to make each penny.

Americans are a little different breed though and feelings for the penny run high. We are basically a nostalgic people and we love that Lincoln’s head is on the penny. We will have to see how this plays out.

No more monkey business

For those people who are around my age, you might remember the musical group called the Monkees. They had a few big hits of which the most famous was probably “Daydream believer”. It was a great song and a good memory for many people.

I was sad to hear that the so-called leader of the band Davy Jones died on Wednesday after complaining of chest pains. We are sorry to see him go he was a part of our lives and many people like me are sorry to see him go.

Antiques

Since everybody knows I have a truck, I was helping a friend move the other day. When people know you have a truck, they always want you to help them move. Anyway, my friend asks if I wanted an old sewing machine that he had in the upstairs bedroom. It looked interesting and so I took it.

The machine was very old and it was a Singer. I looked up the serial number online and discovered that the machine was made in 1892. My first thought was that it may be worth a lot of money. It turns out that there are many machines like it and that they are a dime a dozen. I guess I learned a lesson today.

Panda love

It seems that the country of China is not only exporting billions of dollars in goods to other countries. They are also exporting Panda bears to some zoos. The most recent zoo to get a pair of pandas is in Scotland where two bears named Sunshine and Sweetie arrived at their new home.

The Scotts hope that this will raise tourism and give their zoo some international attention. China is racking in the money as the Scots are paying nearly a million dollars a year for the use of the Pandas.

Dogs and handlers

While there are many examples of brave American soldiers, there are some that we rarely hear about. These American fighters are actually dogs. The army has many special uses for the animals that help sniff out bombs and track insurgents.

Many feel that the dogs don’t receive the tribute they deserve and want to see more done to protect them. The handlers of the dogs say that the care they receive is top-notch and that they have happy productive lives. I’m just glad they are on our side.

Wind and rain

The wind and rain are pretty bad outside right now. The hurricane Irene is approaching us and is getting worse. We are not really in a flood zone and so I feel good about that, but the wind and water could threaten our home. We were able to take some precautions though and I am glad we did.

We put everything up in the yard and made sure all the loose items were packed away. We have plenty of food and water as well as candles in case the power goes out. I think we’ll be alright and make it through the storm.

My dead battery

My car battery has been failing over the last several days. I had to get a jump start from friends at work just to get home the other day. This morning, it was dead again and I was lucky a neighbor of mine came to the rescue and got me on the road again.

I went to a local auto parts store and was surprised that a decent battery costs nearly $100 dollars. I had to buy one though and they put it in for me. Now at least I can start my car and get where I’m going. Cars sure are expensive!
