Is 13 a Lucky Number? Or Unlucky?

One of my gal pals has always been a non-conformist. She is the one from back in the hood that was so impulsive and full of bad ideas that she was always getting into trouble. And half the time she dragged me into the trouble along with her!

So, no surprise that she told me this morning that 13 has always been her “lucky number.” She brought that up because today is Friday the 13th, and a lot of people think that Friday the 13th mean the day will be unlucky for them. But my gal says that she always looks forward to Friday the 13th because it is always her lucky day.

I don’t know that it has ever made much difference to me, one way or the other. How about you? Do you believe that 13 us a lucky number? Or an unlucky number?

Coffee and Doughnuts

When you’ve been driving for hours and are really getting tired of being on the road, it can really help perk yourself up if you stop for a cup of hot coffee and some doughnuts. The caffeine in the coffee will get the adrenaline going and chase the sleep away. The sugar and carbs in the doughnut will also give your metabolism a kick. Plus, it is good to get up out of the driver’s seat where it is dark and quiet, and sit at a busy, bright counter filled with people and noise.

The last time I was driving through New Jersey, I stopped at one of the turnpike refreshment shops and bought coffee and doughnuts. If you have ever driven through New Jersey at night, you know how boring and monotonous the turnpike can be. That in itself causes so many accidents that the state of New Jersey had to put concrete lane barriers between the northbound lanes and the southbound lanes. And they have rest stops every 15 miles or so.

There is always plenty of parking at the rest stops, and most of them have 24 hour gas stations, convenience stores, and either a Burger King or a Dunkin’ Donuts shop so you can take a break and get some food, like my favorite, coffee and doughnuts.

What do you think of this video?

I love music.  If the television isn’t on a movie, it’s on a music channel and no I’m not talking MTV or VH1 either.  I’m talking the channels that only play music like the Sirius channels.  Anyway, I was just flipping through the stations on my car radio trying to find something other than Christmas music and this song caught my attention.

The drums were what first made me stop on this song but then I started listening to the words.  Believe it or not but you can understand what they’re saying which was a major plus.  The group was named Fun.  Pretty cool but I didn’t get to hear the whole song so I hit the computer when I got home trying to find that song.

Man was the video way cool!!  I have always been into history and well this video gave me a look into history and a great song at the same time.  Give it a listen! I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Let the Christmas music begin!!

I like Christmas music.  Really I do but not all of the time.  I really hate it when my favorite station goes to nothing but Christmas music.  Worst of all, my two favorite stations to listen to in my car went to nothing but holiday music the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Well I may as well get into the mood and post one of the songs that used to make me giggle like a little girl when I was a kid.  Yeah, I admit it!  I did giggle like a little girl when I was a kid but I don’t know anyone that didn’t.  Being a kid at Christmas was enough to bring giggles to us all. Happy giggling!!

Christmas lights

I guess I’m a bit home sick this year.  My Dad used to put Christmas lights up every year and just pitch a fit about it.  We all knew he really enjoyed it because once they all were up, and working, he would stand back and look at the house with a look of pride at his accomplishment.

I said the Schmitt House!
I said the Schmitt House!

Well I decided I want to put up Christmas lights this year.  Thank God they aren’t as much of a pain as they used to be years ago.  One bulb goes out and the whole strand went dead.  Not to mention, I have had to buy all new lights since this is my first time putting them up.

I have seen some amazing light displays on the internet that play music and the lights dance to the music.  A strand or two here and there is all I’m up for!  So, let us have the decorating begin.   No my house isn’t going to look like the Schmitt either although my BFF would certainly enjoy witnessing such an event!!! Thanks for sending this great Christmas cartoon to me Lori! And I look forward to talking to you real soon!

Thanksgiving is almost here

Now that I have moved out from my parents house, Thanksgiving just isn’t the same.  I don’t get to go home every year either.  That’s the worst part of growing up I think.

I remember how amazing the house smelled the day before and the day of Thanksgiving.  Mom would start making potato salad or macaroni, deviled eggs and all of those cakes and pies the day before Thanksgiving.  Then on Thanksgiving day, she would get up way before any of us even thought of getting up to start the turkey and ham.

By the time we all woke up, she had it all in the oven and we would wake up starving because the house smelled so good.  We usually ate around 2 and the table to overflowing with food.  Green beans, corn, yeast rolls, and some years, we had roast duck instead of turkey.  Oh how I miss those days!!!  I can still smell my mothers cooking when I think about Thanksgiving.

Puppies

My neighbor has a beautiful pair of German Shepherds.  Well a couple of weeks ago, they had puppies.  One thing I do like about my neighbors and the way they are with their dogs is they only have one litter of puppies a year.  That way, the mother and puppies are healthier.  Oh and she is very careful with who buys her puppies.

She makes sure that the new owners know about the breed of dog first of all and are aware of the cost associated with raising a large breed dog.  The sire of the puppies is attack trained but I have never seen a more gentle dog unless he thinks someone doesn’t belong around there.  Then he’s all business.  I have seen him out playing with her 2 year old grand daughter and he is just as gentle and easy with that little girl as you would ever want.  What amazing animals German Shepherds are.

Where has time gone?

Well it’s hard to imagine that another year is on it’s way out.  I mean, I have been so busy trying to get some things fixed, up graded and just generally looking better that I just realized it’s already November.  The leaves are mostly down which means more yard work than I have done all summer unfortunately.

But you know, leaves are great to add into the soil if you have a garden.  All you have to do is spread out the leaves and till or plow them in if your garden is big enough and you have a tractor that is.  That not only adds much needed nutrients to the soil, but it also helps when you go through those darn dry periods too.  My parents did it every year!

Weekend project

Well I painted the walls of the bathroom, bought a new cabinet and even found some great tile for the floor at a yard sale last weekend.  Now my weekend project is to install the tile and the cabinet.   I should have known that painting the bedroom was only going to encourage even more home improvements.

But you know what, even if it’s a lot of work, I thoroughly enjoy doing things that make this old house a home.  Well make that my home because that’s what it becomes once you put your own touches on a house.  It becomes a home.

I thought this was fall

Well here it is close to the end of September and it’s about 80 degrees outside.  I thought this was fall.  Well it sure doesn’t feel like it to me.  I can’t remember when fall officially starts but with these temperatures, I don’t think it matters.

Last winter was warmer than usual too but the winter before, I don’t think we have ever had so much snow.  I guess the global warming thing everyone was talking about took a break.  I don’t know about you but I’m ready for fall.  This summer wasn’t as hot as usual but I’ve had enough of yard work for now.  Well that is until the leaves start falling.
