Being from the south

This guest post from Lenny Mcknight

Being from the south I was a little reluctant to pick up and move to Ohio. I got this amazing job offer at Ohio Statethough and I knew it was time for me to make a change so I took it and here I am! I actually love it here and I’ve made far more friends already than I thought I would have at this stage but you know, I do miss my family. I got Hughes Net Ohio for the house so I can email them when I get home from work but though I’m having fun it’s just not the same as being able to see them everyday. It kills me that my sister’s daughter is growing up with me so far away but it’s been good for me to finally stand on my own two feet and really do something without a lot of support. I don’t know that I’ll stay here forever but I can’t wait to find out – this is a better home than I thought it’d be!

Christmas Entertaining

Good thing that I took the last couple of days off of work to get ready for the family dinner that is being held at my parent’s house in just a few short days from now. There is always so much to get done for big events such as this with such a large family to try and accommodate and cater to every one’s needs and wants. It is a good thing that we live in the south and don’t have to worry about cold weather for Christmas and we can entertain outside if we want to and believe me we really want to with this many people attending and the number always rising with each year that passes.

My folks have a great yard with plenty of Picnic Tables for people to utilize come meal time so no one has to worry about not having a place to sit and eat at. Nothing worse than having to balance and plate and a drink on your lap, been there done that, no thank you.

There are plenty of Adirondack chairs on the front porch for folks that just want to kick back and watch the kids playing on the wonderful playground equipment that the folks take so much pride in having for all their grandchildren to enjoy all year round. I wish that I had a front porch as grand as my folks, but at least I get to enjoy theirs when I go over there for visits and family festivities.

Medical Scrubs for Christmas

This year for Christmas I am thinking of purchasing a set of medical scrubs for my sister-in-law that I found online. I have found that these medical scrubs are so very comfortable and they keep you very cool during the hot summer months that have now come to an end for the year of 2011, but before we know it the summer of 2012 will be upon us and we all will be looking for nice looking clothes to wear while trying to keep cool.

My oldest sister suggested these scrubs for me to try out this summer, which I did and I couldn’t have been happier with the ones that I found and ordered online from Blue Sky Scrubs and I’d like to pass along the good things that I have found to others that I care about. So with Christmas looming ahead I am trying to pick up gift suggestions as well as the actually gifts along the way before the mad rush starts due to all of the holidays that are fast approaching us. Anything that I can find and buy online is the way to go for me, I hate going out to the malls and all the other retail stores scattered around town. It is kind of a Bah Humbug thing for me the older I get.

Searching For Disney DVD Movies

My daughter has asked me to keep my eyes open for any of the hundreds of Disney dvd movies for my granddaughter who is getting old enough to sit down and watch most of a movie. Note that I said most. What I really want to do is take my 20 month old granddaughter to see The Lion King at the movie theater that has been out a couple of weeks no, but every time I offer to take her I get shot down for some reason or another. I’m thinking that she and her finance want to take her to her first real movie experience and are just to shy to tell me so.  I can understand why they would feel that way, new parents always want to do all kinds of things with their kids first before any other family member or friend does, I just wish that they would come out and say so.

Anyway I promised that I will look around to see if I can find any of the requested Disney dvd movies, there are so many of them that I’m sure I can come up with something. Am thinking that if I do find any that I will keep them until December 23rd, which will be her 2nd birthday and for Christmas gifts as well, kill to birds with one stone so to speak.

Helping Out Family

I promised my mother that I would do some research for her on some of the Undermount Sinks that I can find on the Internet. She still is a little gun shy when it comes to the Internet, besides sending her emails out to friends and family, so she turns to me on occasion to assist her for things that she is interested in. I don’t mind really, she has been having a really rough time of it since my dad passed away 3 years ago, anything I can do to make things easier for her is good with me.

I’m going to find her the perfect Undermount Sink and my kid brother will install it for her. I had no idea of the variety of sinks that are available these days. In looking around I have fallen in love with the glass sinks that I’ve seen lately and I’ve bookmarked a couple of sites that have the ones that really float my boat for when I get into the remodeling mode for my own place. Getting better at bar trivia

Guest post written by Anna Bishop

When I first moved in with my roommates after college, we didn’t really have a whole lot in common. I guess maybe it was beacause we all only had mutual friends or mutual friends of mutual friends. But since then we’ve found something that unites us, bar trivia.

After a long day at work in the middle of the week, there’s nothing more that I love than totally beating a bunch of strangers with my knowledge of useless trivia. But I like to find different bar trivia places to go to each week. I was online looking up some of the better trivia places in Chicago when I ran across some info on Chicago wireless internet providers. After I looked through it some, I shwoed it to my roommates and we changed over our home internet service to it.

I think that our bar trivia skills are getting even better. It just so happens works that we all have a different area of expertise, so we know the answers to a whole bunch of the answers. If anything, it’s ecnomical because we win free drinks when we win!

Disaster Date

I have been watching MTV more than usual lately. For a long time I had nothing to do with MTV or VH1, since the days of them playing music videos have long gone by the way side and the shows that had taken place of videos were pretty lame. But since I’ve started to watch The Jersey Shore on MTV I have seen a couple of pretty decent shows that I enjoy. My favorite being Disaster Date. These poor people are set up by their friends on a blind date and then they let the fun and the games begin.

Say Yes To The Dress

I’ve had the opportunity to watch TLC’s new hit TV show “Say Yes To The Dress”  What I can’t understand is in these horrible economic times with the economy totally in the toilet how these people are coming up with the thousands of dollars that they are spending on a dress that is only going to be used one time. Some of these dresses are well over ten thousand dollars, that is a lot of money that I think could be better spent in so m

“EYES ON THE PRIZE” TOUCHES THE SOUL

Thanks to Roman May

What started out as a typical movie night at a girlfriend’s house, ended up in a historical lesson neither of us will ever forget. That night the Public Broadcasting Station began the airing of the documentary “Eyes on the Prize”. This is an award winning documentary about the American Civil Rights Movement and covers the period from 1954 to 1985.

The documentary is a series lasting 14 hours. My girlfriend would record the program from her directstartv.com and we would parcel it out over seven viewings. Be prepared, it will hook you and you will find a way to watch all 14 hours.

There were so many aspects of the documentary that fascinated the history buff in me, naming one is impossible. The power of one to ignite action as shown through the footage of the Montgomery Bus Boycott sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person was inspiring. How can you forget the footage of the hanging of Emmett Till, a 14 year old boy, because of his color? The documentary is filled with various aspects of the movement including the Freedom Rides, passage of the Voting Rights Act, and, of course, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Eyes on the Prize” leaves an impression on your soul. That’s why it is my favorite.

Totally Wacked Out Jerry Fans

Who still watches Jerry Springer after all the talk about how his show is all a bunch of B.S. Even before I knew the show was totally stagged there was nothing appealing to me about these totally wacked out people, airing their dirty laundry in front of the whole country, that typically ended the show in a physical free-for-all. There has to be something seriously wrong with the millions of Jerry’s fans that still faithfully watch this totally useless 60 minutes of air time.
