Ethanol, Good or Bad?

I have been reading a lot about ethanol lately. Many people are counting on it to help reduce greenhouse emissions. By growing corn and turning it into fuel, we have reduced our dependency on fossil fuels. The problem is how much energy are we actually saving? It takes a lot of energy to grow, transport, and process the corn. By the time were done, we have used almost as much energy as we are trying to save.

Another problem associated with ethanol is that it causes food prices to rise. By transferring production of corn to fuel use, there is less to sell as food. Some third world countries are really feeling the pinch. There have even been riots over the situation. I hope that we can find an answer to this problem that will satisfy us all!

Big Weekend

Around here, Memorial Day is a huge holiday. Not only do all the governemnt and military offices take the holiday very seriously to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of our servicemen, servicewomen and their families, but this is also the unofficial start of summer.

Tonight on the way home from work I stopped at the gas station to fill up and the place was jamming with people at every pump. People were getting an early start on the weekend by getting gas, buying beer and those cheap styrofoam coolers, and grabbing big bags of ice from the convenience store freezers.

Since the weather is supposed to be sunny and hot, this is the perfect weekend to find a beach and get a start on our summer tans.

A Mother’s Day to Remember!

This year I really wanted to do something special for my Mom. I decided to get her the usual flowers that she always gets, but in addition to that I surprised her with a special gift. I got my mom two tickets to fly to Las Vegas. What I really did was to purchase a package complete with a hotel room, transportation, and meals. I know she loves that city and always is willing to go.

My Mom has done so much for me over the years and I really want her to know how much I appreciate it. I am sure she will take her friend next door with her and they will have a great time. So mom, have a wonderful trip and I’ll see you when you get back.

Robots Rock

Robots are here to stay, but we don’t have much use for personal robots yet. I would really like to have an R2D2 robot and a C3PO to help me out. There are a lot of things I could have a robot do for me that I would rather not have to handle myself.

I guess the closest thing to a personal robot is the Roomba vacuum cleaner. My sister has one and loves it. It cleans the floors by itself and does great on everything except stairs.

Embracing a Bald Head

My hair will grow back and I have no intentions of staying bald. In fact, it kinda freaks me out to see my bald head in the mirror when I walk into the bathroom. But some guys have embraced being bald – especially the aging rock stars and guys who want to use their heads as a social statement.

Bad Hair

Today I wanted to get my hair cut. I can’t stand it when my hair flies into my eyes when I am driving or trying to work. So I went to the little shopping center down the road from my house and found a hair cutting place where it costs around ten bucks for a haircut. I don’t know any of the girls in there who cut hair, so I just paid my money and took my chances. Well, they must have given me the new girl who doesn’t know how to cut guy’s hair. She did an awful job. I looked in the mirror and said, “You have got to be kidding me.” I was so mad with her but I kept my cool. I told her the only way to fix it was to just shave it all off. So I’ll be a baldy for a few weeks, thanks to this dumb girl’s bad hair cut and it cost me $10 to get my head shaved. I won’t be going back there any time soon.

Low Tech Repairs

Computers are great when they work. Not so great when all they do is sit there and blink at you. Mine locked up this morning and I wasted 2 hours tinkering with it. I was THIS CLOSE to grabbing a hammer to “fix it.”

Brunch Was Nice

Last time we ate at O’Charley’s we were invited to sign up with our emails for special offers. I have an extra email account for junk mail and places that require an email to sign up, so I did sign up for the O’Charley’s program.

Soon after I got a nice offer in my email to save $5 on any meal check over $20. That’s a nice chunk of change off a small bill, so we decided to go and have brunch.

The brunch menu has a lot of choices and we ordered the big platter with a little bit of everything It was a lot of food and we couldn’t eat it all, so we took the leftovers with us for the dogs to have a treat.

It was really tasty, a good price, and saving $5 was nice treat, too.

Pot of Gold

Wouldn’t it be totally cool if there really were little men running around that would grant you a wish or give you a big pot of gold if you were lucky enough to catch one? I think the very idea really appeals to every hunter and fisherman out there!

So here’s a wish that you find your pot of gold someday, and by the way, Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Gardening

Now that Spring is almost here, I’m thinking seriously about planting a little vegetable garden in the side yard. I think that is the only spot around my house that gets enough sun to be able to grow anything. It’s a small patch but maybe big enough to save us a little money on groceries and be a little healthier for us, too. We could plant some tomatoes, green peppers and maybe some pumpkins and summer squash. That would be a good start to test whether I have a green thumb or not.
