Home Improvement

I have seen a lot of new houses on the market but personally, I love my older built home.  My home was built in the late 1940’s and has more charm than any of the cookie cutter houses they are building these days.  With an older home, you not only get better workmanship, but you get a work in progress.

I love doing home improvement tasks.  Something as simple as a coat or two of paint can make an enormous change in not only the look of a room, but also the feeling of that room.  My next home improvement project is the bathroom.  A little paint, tile floor and maybe a new cabinet is in order.  Sounds like a plan in the making to me.

I thought this was fall

Well here it is close to the end of September and it’s about 80 degrees outside.  I thought this was fall.  Well it sure doesn’t feel like it to me.  I can’t remember when fall officially starts but with these temperatures, I don’t think it matters.

Last winter was warmer than usual too but the winter before, I don’t think we have ever had so much snow.  I guess the global warming thing everyone was talking about took a break.  I don’t know about you but I’m ready for fall.  This summer wasn’t as hot as usual but I’ve had enough of yard work for now.  Well that is until the leaves start falling.

Fishing anyone?

I can’t think of anything more relaxing than fishing.  I know a lot of people think it’s a waste of time to sit on the bank of a river or lake and drown some worms as I have heard it put but I can’t think of anything better than spending the day enjoying nature.

There’s just something about being around water that calms my soul.  I guess it could have something to do with the fact that some of my favorite memories involve my grandfather or my father and fishing.  Not to mention, on a good day, you know what’s for dinner.

Happy Birthday Dad

My father is 82 years old today.  It amazes me to stop and think of all of the things he has seen in his lifetime.  I remember when cable TV first came out and my Dad swore that he would not pay for TV when there is free TV that we all have looked at for the past 50 years.  Well that changed.  He loves his satellite TV now.

Cell phones?  He hated the house phone because it rang all of the time and doesn’t feel any better about cell phones.  “Why is the world would anyone want to walk around with a telephone in their ear” was one of his favorite sayings until Mom got a cell phone.  Yup, there sure have been a lot of changes in his life.

Bee stings

It’s been a long time since I have been stung by a bee and I had forgotten just how much bee stings can hurt.  I was mowing yesterday and out of nowhere this bee came and stung me right on the back of my hand.  It hit me fast and I didn’t even get to see what type of bee it was either.

So here I go inside whimpering like a kid or something about how bad it hurt.  Did you know that meat tenderizer mixed with a little water makes a great bee sting remedy?  I sure didn’t.  Rachel mixed some and put it on the sting with a bandage and before I knew it, the stinging was gone.  Barely left a mark on my hand either.  Try it next time you get stung.

Computer slowing down

I sure wish I knew what was up with my computer.  It’s slowing down way too much.  I have done the usual like running a disk clean up and defragmented it but neither has done a darn thing to speed my computer back up.

Even trying to write my blog is a bit of a pain but I do enjoy blogging so I guess I’ll just have to deal with it.  Oh sure, I’ll take it in to be looked at once it bugs me enough but for now, I’ll just keep on keeping on.  Anyone know of any software that could help?

Tomatoes

I’m not much of a farmer but I planted a couple of tomato plants this year in containers.  I love fresh vine ripe tomatoes.  They are so much better than what you get in grocery stores.  We have so many tomatoes right now that we are even freezing some.

All you have to do is put the tomato in boiling water for about 30 seconds and then put them in cold water and the peeling comes off really easy.  Then all you have to do is dice the tomato or even put it in a freezer bag whole.  Even if you freeze them whole, they won’t stay that way once they’re thawed out but man do they come in handy to make home made sauces and soups.

More great finds

Last weekend we found some great lawn furniture for our deck.  I don’t like the new stuff because of not only the price, but they just don’t seem to last that long.  I have a friend that does powder coating.  If you don’t know what that is, it’s this powder that is put on anything medal and then baked in a large oven.  It comes out looking like you have painted what ever you had powder coated but lasts a lot longer.

Not only does that make the medal look new, but there are a lot of different colors and textures you can choose from.  In other words, you can have your yard furniture match most anything.  Great way to restore antique lawn furniture.

Be a trucker

When I was young back in the 70’s it was always a cool thing to be a trucker. We watched all the trucking shows on TV like Convoy and Smokey and the bandit. My brothers and I would always hang out the windows of our car and pump our arms at a trucker trying to encourage him into honking the horn.

Nowadays, truckers are more in demand than ever. The problem is that not too many people actually want to be a trucker anymore. Living on the road is difficult and getting the proper licenses is time-consuming and expensive. I think that for the right person though, it could be a great career move. Give it some thought.

Fish tanks

A friend of mine was moving and decided that he did not have room for the fish tank he had. I was a little hesitant at first but after some thinking I decided to take the tank off his hands. The tank was a 55 gallon one and came with two fish. I knew it would be a lot of work but I was ready for the challenge.

After a fair amount of work, we got the tank set up in our home. It sits in a prominent place in our living room. The tank is beautiful and is a wonderful addition to our home. We have added some fish to the tank and it has really brought our family together.
