Enjoyed Out Fourth of July Weekend

This past weekend was really one of the best long weekends that I can remember. Everything was perfect. The weather was nice, so we were able to get outside every day. We grilled out on the deck, went to the lake every day, and of course we enjoyed fireworks at night. I grilled steaks on Saturday and then on Sunday I went all out and grilled $60 worth of pork ribs. Good stuff!

There were lots of free fireworks shows held all around town, plus the rednecks in my neighborhood all buy hundreds of dollars worth of illegal fireworks and set them off in their back yards every night. We have had free neighborhood shows every night since Thursday. Just when I think they have run out of cash for all those bangs and booms, someone runs across the county line to one of the fireworks tents and buys another hundred dollars worth.

Let the Christmas music begin!!

I like Christmas music.  Really I do but not all of the time.  I really hate it when my favorite station goes to nothing but Christmas music.  Worst of all, my two favorite stations to listen to in my car went to nothing but holiday music the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Well I may as well get into the mood and post one of the songs that used to make me giggle like a little girl when I was a kid.  Yeah, I admit it!  I did giggle like a little girl when I was a kid but I don’t know anyone that didn’t.  Being a kid at Christmas was enough to bring giggles to us all. Happy giggling!!

Christmas lights

I guess I’m a bit home sick this year.  My Dad used to put Christmas lights up every year and just pitch a fit about it.  We all knew he really enjoyed it because once they all were up, and working, he would stand back and look at the house with a look of pride at his accomplishment.

I said the Schmitt House!
I said the Schmitt House!

Well I decided I want to put up Christmas lights this year.  Thank God they aren’t as much of a pain as they used to be years ago.  One bulb goes out and the whole strand went dead.  Not to mention, I have had to buy all new lights since this is my first time putting them up.

I have seen some amazing light displays on the internet that play music and the lights dance to the music.  A strand or two here and there is all I’m up for!  So, let us have the decorating begin.   No my house isn’t going to look like the Schmitt either although my BFF would certainly enjoy witnessing such an event!!! Thanks for sending this great Christmas cartoon to me Lori! And I look forward to talking to you real soon!

Thanksgiving is almost here

Now that I have moved out from my parents house, Thanksgiving just isn’t the same.  I don’t get to go home every year either.  That’s the worst part of growing up I think.

I remember how amazing the house smelled the day before and the day of Thanksgiving.  Mom would start making potato salad or macaroni, deviled eggs and all of those cakes and pies the day before Thanksgiving.  Then on Thanksgiving day, she would get up way before any of us even thought of getting up to start the turkey and ham.

By the time we all woke up, she had it all in the oven and we would wake up starving because the house smelled so good.  We usually ate around 2 and the table to overflowing with food.  Green beans, corn, yeast rolls, and some years, we had roast duck instead of turkey.  Oh how I miss those days!!!  I can still smell my mothers cooking when I think about Thanksgiving.

Well worth the trip

If you haven’t ever been to Washington DC, you should make the trip.  There is something for everyone there.  Not only were the July 4th fireworks amazing but the museums were very educational.  My favorite just happened to be the NRA museum and there’s no charge to get in.  Believe it or not but Rachel actually found it interesting too.

Yeah I know most people think that guns and things like that are a guy thing but that’s not necessarily true.  That’s almost like saying art museums are for ladies.  I dare to disagree.  If you could have seen some of the amazing work on not only the stocks of the guns but also etched in the medal on these weapons, you would appreciate the workmanship if not the weapon.  No I’m not promoting anything with guns, just promoting a nice trip.

Fireworks

As usual, we went out to see the fireworks display this year. I was glad that all the family could attend. It was nice to have the family together as we watched the fireworks display in all its glory. We celebrated the birth of our country together.

The show lasted about forty-five minutes and was worth all the trouble. The beach was packed with people who were trying to see the show like we were. We found a great spot to observe the show and were satisfied with the results. It was a fun night together and I hope to do it again next year.

Fireworks in Washington DC

Everyone keeps telling me that you haven’t seen fireworks until you see them in Washington DC.  I have been told that there is nothing more beautiful than seeing them around the Monument.  Well, looks like we will get to know first hand.

It’s been too long since either of us has seen a really good fireworks display so we decided to take a road trip to Washington DC to see what all of the fuss is about.  I did pull up a couple of youtube videos from the past years and I must admit, I’m getting a bit excited about seeing them up close and personal.  Stay safe everyone and enjoy your holiday.

A perfect day

The whole family piled into the car and we headed out to the annual parade for Saint Patrick. We got there early and I found a good place to park. We got out and headed down the street all dressed in green. We were a sight to see.

The parade finally started and it was worth the wait. There were many things going on and the kids had a great time. When it was over, we had a cookout at a local park. All in all it was a great day.

Gifts galore

It seems that everyone went a little overboard with the gift buying this year. The tree was stacked with presents from everyone to everyone. There is a mountain of torn gift wrapping all over the floor and ribbons and bows everywhere. I think everyone is happy with their gifts and it’s been a good morning.

The preparation of the food will soon be the next thing on the agenda. There has been some baking going on over the last several days but the real serious cooking will soon start. As usual, I feel blessed to have so many people I love around and hope that everyone out there is having as great a day as I.

Small Business

Thanks to Olga Quinn

Small business owners across the country are hurting, it’s not just me, but these times are tougher than I’ve ever seen in the last 30 years I’ve been doing this. We’re just not as busy as we’ve been in years past but that’s given me an opportunity to really try hard to make this business better and more efficient for when things do pick back up. I got us some http://smallbusiness.xo.com/ solutions to streamline things a bit and I did an allover audit of our spending and all that so I could make sure we weren’t hemorrhaging money in places we shouldn’t have been. There are only so many things I can do right now to help business pick up and after that’s done I really just have to wait, you know? Things will come back like they have before we just may have to wait a while longer this time around for it to happen…nothing’s easy in this economic crisis and that’s the end of that story. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.
