Happy New Year

The New Year is ringing in and I am hoping that it will be a good one. I have made a few resolutions that I think will help me become a better person this year. One thing I have determined to do is to lose a few pounds. I want to start eating healthier and have taken steps to do so.

There are a lot of little things to do that all add up to a better way of living. I am going to eat more fruits and vegetables this year and try to lay off the fatty diet I have become used too. I hope that everyone else will take some steps to improve their life as well. Good Luck and Happy New Year!!

Rainy and cold

Today’s weather has been rainy and cold. This has ruined my plan of putting up the Christmas lights that I had planned to do. Since this chore has been canceled, I have been forced to find other things to do. Mostly, I have been on the computer catching up on my writings. It has been a busy time for me lately and I needed a day or two to catch up.

One problem that I have had is my body is aching. Whenever the cold gets to my old bones, I get a little uncomfortable. I turned up the heat a little but do not want to run up my heating bill too much. I was glad when the clothes we washed were put in the dryer, that warmed things up a bit! I think maybe I’ll also start a fire later this evening that will be nice!

Immigration

Ever since the economic downturn started, there have been increased grumblings about the immigration laws. Some people wonder why the U.S. is still allowing 1.5 million new immigrants into the country when there is not enough work for the people who are already here. These new additions to our nation are now competing with Americans for the few jobs that are left.

While I would never agree that we should end immigration to our country, I would suggest that we could further limit the number of new people. That only makes sense when our unemployment rate is so high. I hope the powers that be would take a second look at this policy to see if it still makes sense.

Love them gift cards!

I have thought that the invention of the gift card was a great idea. Its ease of purchase in the event that an emergency gift was required made it a useful tool. I have been saved from an embarrassing situation more than once by being able to purchase a quick gift for a forgotten event.

It turns out that there can be drawbacks to this wonderful item. Some cards carry fees that reduce their value over time. Another problem is that many times the cards are never used. When they are used, it’s not uncommon that the buyer ends up spending more money than they thought by using the card! Despite their drawbacks, I still love the gift card!

The Beatles

The Beatles enjoy the reputation of being one of the most popular bands in the world. They are absolutely one of my favorites and have provided me with many years of enjoyment. That’s why I was excited when I heard about the new release of their songs that have been digitally remastered. There are 12 albums total and all will be released. I hope that you are as ready to rediscover their music as I am!

A High Place

Everyone has probably heard about the highest mountain in the world. This is of course MT Everest which is located in the Himalaya mountain range. Estimated to be 29,029 ft above sea level, the mountain towers above the world in its quiet way. The first ever successful attempt to climb the mountain was achieved by two climbers named Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and tensing Norgay from Nepal. The made a successful attempt at the mountain in 1953.

This mountain has been the focus of many books and TV shows. Its ability to attract climbers to its peak is unrivaled. Despite the dangers, people keep coming to conquer the mountain and often risk their lives by doing so. I have no wish to climb the mountain at this point in my life. I am sure that I lack the strength and stamina it would take. I will leave it to others!

The phone call

My mom called the other day and we got to talking. I didn’t realize it at the time, but we spent two hours on the phone. I guess we had a lot of catching up to do. It’s funny how time can get away from you when you are doing something interesting. I know it must sound funny that talking with my mom is interesting, but I guess it was.

I remember when I first had a girlfriend; we used to talk deep into the night. I don’t really remember anything that we specifically talked about, but it must have kept me busy. I guess that’s the way phone calls go. Some are short and some are long!

A Wonderful invention

One of the best inventions lately has been the advent of the gift card. I really like how easy it is to purchase one and how much time it saves. Whenever I need to buy a gift for someone, I tend to look at the option of a gift card first. I usually will get one from a local restaurant because I know that everyone likes to eat.

Many times it is difficult to know what kind of gift someone wants. Since I need to buy things for people from time to time, it has become a standard gift for me. I like the quick easy access to them and their versatility. I am glad they invented the gift card!

Get it done!

One thing I like to pass on to my kids is the work ethic that my father taught me. When I was young, we were worked to death by my father. We did all manner of odd jobs in addition to our daily chores. There was never a day when we lacked something to do. I was not always happy at the time, but now I understand the value of this lesson.

Whenever possible, I try to make my own kids earn their keep and do the chores that I assign. I believe that a good work ethic will benefit them in the long run. No one likes a lazy bum and if I can help it, no one will say that about my kids!

Resolution

Picked up a paperback book at Target and started reading it last night. The book is called, “Resolution,” about a western town with that name. It has a couple of main characters who used to be sheriffs in another town and quit to get some peace in their lives, but then they caught up in the politics of the new place they end up. It’s pretty interesting to read the human dynamics of surviving in the old west. Imagine living in a town with no law, just bullies and gunslingers.
