Trying to get out of the habit of buying a hamburger and fried for lunch so often. I seem to have them 4-5 times a week. That can’t be good for me, health wise, and it gets expensive, too. I am going to try to have a sub sandwich at least once a week and some kind of fish or salad on other days. Surely I can get back to a healthy diet and treat my heart better.
Disposable PCs
I am wondering if anyone has a computer that they use on a daily basis that is more than 2 year old? I know that none of mine seem to least that long. I have both a desktop and a laptop, and both were bought this year. They are not top of the line, I admit. But together they cost almost one thousand dollars. I don’t like the idea of spending that much money on something that will break or need to be replaced in just a year or two. I wonder how long these two computers are going to last?
Thank a Vet for Your Freedoms
On Memorial Day, we are reminded that so many men and women have fought for our country and have paid for our freedoms dearly, many with their lives. So if you see a veteran today, make sure you say thank you. We take a lot for granted in our country, but when you stop and think about it, we really are the best country in the whole world, and our freedoms have been bought and paid for over the years with real lives.
Bugs
This summer is going to be very buggy. There are already some voracious mosquitoes buzzing my yard and the 17 year cicadas are here this year. Or is it the 13 year cicadas? I don’t know which brood is here, but they are loud and crawling all over everything – trees, chimneys, and doghouses. I’ve also seen a variety of bees and wasps, several sizes of ants, and this morning a flock (if that’s the proper names for a group of these) lady bugs.
School Reform
One of the hot topics in the news is education reform. I realize our schools are not meeting the needs of the students in today’s world and they are not producing the future employees that tomorrows companies are going to want to hire and pay well. This worries me quite a bit. Today’s children are tomorrows doctors, teachers and auto mechanics. Let’s all make sure we help these children achieve better educational goals.
Too Much Drama
One of my cousins has been posting one or two lines from hit songs as her Facebook status. I never know if what she posted is what she is thinking or if it is just words from a song that she likes. Most of the time they are very dramatic, and could be taken as a sign that she is thinking of suicide or taking off and leaving. It is very upsetting when I first read it, then some of her friends make jokes and I realize that it is a song or something the kids just say these days.
I suppose if it is from a song that she likes she might see some relevance of the words to her life. But it is so confusing.
Speaking Spanish
In school we had to take a foreign language for two years to be able to graduate with enough credits. So I took Spanish. But I honestly don’t remember much of it. I don’t speak it very well and don’t have the chance to speak it often. But there are a lot more people in the area who speak Spanish as their first language. There was a recent report in the newspaper that our population is now at least 10% Hispanic. That is a big jump since the last census.
Baby Gates
My oldest daughter came by the house with my granddaughter for a visit last night. The baby is walking now and it surprises us how fast she can be. One minute she is in the room with you and the next minute everyone is looking around asking, where’s the baby? And then we find her somewhere inappropriate, like the bathroom. So I figure its time to invest in baby gates to keep that little critter corralled in my house. I don’t want to find her with her hands in toilet ever again.
My Old Pickup Truck
I have been driving a pickup truck for most of my life, and I’ve had this old Ford F-150 for about 14 years now. The truck comes in so handy – I can always carry what I want in the back, make short runs to the dump and once in a while I have even slept in it. There have been so many people borrowing it to move their stuff from one house to the next, that I can’t even remember how many moves it has done.
The truck is starting to a look a little shabby by now and this morning the door handle broke off when I went to get in it for the commute to my store. It’s a bit of nuisance having to get in the truck from the passenger side. I just hope that door handle doesn’t break off, too. I don’t think I can fit my big behind through the sliding back window to get in it nowadays, even in an emergency.
Free Subs at Jersey Mike’s
There are several good sub shop chains in this area. One of my favorites is the Jersey Mikes Chain. The have a counter guy sliced the deli meats in front of you while you order the food. I like the way they have all the popular dressings put together as “Mike’s Way.” That makes it easy to order the toppings and dressings like I want them.
Today Jersey Mike’s is doing a special give back to the community promotion where they are giving away free subs if you make at least a one dollar donation to the Nashville Predators. Community fund. That’s a bargain!
