Playing in the rain

This weather has made it a challenge for the kids to be playing outside, enjoying their summer vacation from school. We have been experiencing severe thunder and lightening storms, but the temperature is still on the high side of being in the 90’s and all of the kids and their friends what to go outside and jump on the trampoline and play outside.

I remember as a kid, my mother never allowed us to play in the rain, never, I guess she was afraid of one of us getting sick and then the rest of us would get sick and then my mother would have to deal with all of these sick kids.

I on the other hand encourage my kids to go outside and play in the rain, as long as it isn’t the least bit chilly and that there isn’t any lightening going on. I believe there is no reason in the world for them not to unless they would become wet and cold from it. But a good play in the nice warm rain when it is hot outside is good for everybody, that is my story and I’m sticking with it.

So when all of the kids are whining about it raining out and them not being able to play outside, I tell them go ahead and go and have a blast doing it, just be careful.

Weeding the garden

Since we have been getting a bit of rain everyday for the past week, hubby and I haven’t spent any time in the garden, but the rain has held off for two days now and we ventured outside today to have a look at it and we were both shocked with what we found. Our garden no longer resembled a garden, it had taken on the look of a small jungle, in just over a weeks time of daily rain and no chance for weeding, our garden kept us both busy for several hours this afternoon of back breaking picking and weeding.

We both came inside soaking wet with sweat and filthy dirty, with a major thirst for 2 large cold glasses of sweet iced tea, of which we both guzzled down instantly and was ready for more.

It was worth all of the effort because now we can see that the garden is producing, we saw several small tomatoes on the vines and some things that we aren’t sure of what they are.  Looks like the garden will do us well this year, I sure hope so!

Gas was holding at $3.99

Sunday being Father’s Day, we took the kids and we headed down to Hubby’s parent’s homestead for a nice visit with the family. All went well, everyone behaved, kids and adults both. The weather was nice enough so that being outside for a good amount of the day was tolerable, sitting in the house all day is too much to ask so many people in such a small house and all.

The drive down there is almost a two hour drive and we passed numerous gas stations and we noticed on the drive down how every single gas station had priced their gasoline at $3.99, it appeared as if no one wanted to be the first to hit the big 4 dollar mark. I thought it odd that every single station would have the exact price, that has never, ever happened before, there is usually a wide variety of prices being displayed by all of the different companies.

On the way home we made sure to look at every station and indeed it was the case. I wonder what their prices are today, now that people are home after the Father’s Day holiday is over. Usually the companies raise the price right before a holiday – this holiday was just totally out of character for such a business.

What a beautiful day

The day was so nice that Hubby and I just had to go outside and enjoy some of it, it was in the mid seventies! It rained all day yesterday (Sunday) and now we are in for a nice week, it least that is what they are saying today.

The yard is in need of so much that at first we were over whelmed, but we just dug in and soon the afternoon was almost over and we were getting hungry for dinner. I love that it can be 7:30pm and it is still light outside.

I can’t wait until the firefly’s start coming out, there is something magical about seeing them flittering about in the backyard. And we should be getting some hummingbirds again this year, they are so cool to watch!

Yardwork

It turned out the be such a nice warm day, it hit the 70’s and it is supposed to stay this way at least for a few more days. I hope that it stays longer than that.

After my youngest got home from school, I got her a snack and then got her started on her homework.  I then managed to sneak outside for a good hour and got my hands nice and dirty and got some weeding and raking done. Boy it felt good, all kinds of people were out and about, walking by and stopping to say a quick hello and a how do you do, enjoying the nice warm weather.

I also managed to half way clean off the back porch, I’m gonna need Hubby to turn the outside faucets back on, I don’t think we will be having anymore below freezing nights anymore, and so many things need a good hosing off.

I hope to be able and go back out again for just a bit tomorrow, a little at a time and it will all get down in due time.

Oh the weather outside is frightful

The wind is howling so hard and so loud that I barely heard the knocking at the front door, we have a doorbell just for that use but people around here tend to only knock.  A neighbor from a few houses down, came by to inform us that she had heard a loud noise outside and noticed that a tree had come down in our backyard.  So with that sudden news, Hubby as quickly as he could, climbed out of bed, we all threw on our warm clothes and went out back to check it out.

Oh the horror of it all! It seems that our next door neighbor now has one of his trees in our backyard.  What a mess it is.  The tree has landed right in our beautiful back part of the yard that we have been working so hard at making it a nice sitting area for us to enjoy.  It didn’t get our garden, though it did take out a few of the lawn chairs, plus the fallen tree also clipped the back of the garage, took out the old satellite dish and there are now pieces of tree everywhere and boy is Hubby hopping mad.  We have had several talks with this neighbor concerning several of the old and rotting trees in his yard that we were afraid were going to come down, right where this tree is right now. I guess talk time is over.

A call to our well paid insurance company has been made and it looks like we have our work cut out for us for the next few weeks.  Hey, on the lighter side of it all, maybe we will get some firewood out of the deal, the cost of heating oil is killing us this year.
