Wash Day

For years I would do laundry on Wednesday nights. It was always a night with several situation comedies on TV and I could time the trips downstairs to the washer, and then to the dryer, to coincide with the commercial breaks or between shows. But now I seem to just wash a load whenever there is enough accumulation to warrant running the machines. So, tonight is the night – I don’t see any point in waiting until Wednesday.

Fun in the Kitchen

I just discovered the Paula Dean web site and I am fired up about trying some of her recipes at home. She has the most wonderful personality and I know that everyone raves about how delicious her food is. Real Southern home cooking food. I’m going to start with a dessert and then work my way up to the main course. There are hundreds of recipes and videos on her site – I can’t wait to try a bunch of them.

Big Monitors

I remember when computers first came out and the monitors were nothing more than a stripped down TV set. Most of them were monotone – either gray text on a black screen or white/yellow text on a dark green screen.

When they actually went to color, and the world of graphics opened up for computer users. I remember seeing the high price tags for the color monitors and they were huge, heavy boxes of plastic with a screen full of glare.

Now, we have the color flat screen and high definition screens. They have gotten much cheaper and are the standard for today’s computer users.

Bookworm

Sometimes I want to play a quick game to take a mental break from my real world. I used to play solitaire for 10 minutes or so, and then I tried my hand at Mahjong. Now I found a cool word game called Bookworm. It is like Scrabble in that you use tiles with letters to make words. But it is a single player game and it really does exercise the brain. I used to be happy to get a high score of 100,000 before losing a round, but now I regularly top 1,000,000 and the same game can go one for weeks at a time – I just play for 10 or 12 minutes and save the current game. Then, when I have another quick break, I pick up from where I left off and play for a while, save it, and so on.

Allergies or the Flu?

Woke up feeling really bad this morning. I am sweating really bad and I can’t breathe without coughing a dry, hacking cough. I might have to stay home today – I fell awful and if it is not allergies, then I don’t want to share germs with the people at work. I just want some Nyquil and a warm soft blanket and pillow, so I can go back to sleep.

Where’s My Pizza?

I ordered a pizza and hot wings online tonight. I’m tired and it’s Friday and I think I need pizza and wings to wind down and chill. But I ordered the food online over an hour ago and still no food. I remember when Dominoes first came out, back in the early years, they promised to bring your pizza to your door in 10 minutes or less. Well, that promise sure didn’t last.

Happy Birthday Micah

cake

My friend, Micah, is trying to get his big break in the music business. Since today is his birthday, I thought it would be fun to bake him a cake shaped like a guitar. I think it turned out really good – it looks just like this one – and will be carrying it over to his house after work for a surprise.

Easter Monday

A friend told me that Easter Monday is celebrated in Canada. That makes me feel guilty that our good neighbors to the North have some holidays and celebrations that we don’t even know about or acknowledge. I’m sure they have several other holidays, like their own “Independence Day” or their own “Thanksgiving” and I’ve never paid any attention at all. That is so selfish of us, but I think it is also very American, in an unflattering way.

Congrats, Diana!

My girlfriend, Diana, just sent me a text that she and Jeremy areĀ  engaged! How wonderful for her, and for him!

I know she has been dating this guy since her senior year in college. They wanted to wait and get their own careers established before making that big commitment. So I guess that now everything is really working out well for them both and they have decided to take the next big step. Congrats, Diana and Jeremy!

Free Rentals

Last year I started using Redbox to rent movies and I love them. I signed up online and use their online reservations all the time – it is very easy. Since I signed up with my cell phone, they send me text messages about once a week with a special code to get a free rental. I love getting free stuff – this is a really convenient and affordable way to watch movies.
