What is the Texas Virtual Border Watch?

One of the most innovative programs in preventing illegal immigration and protecting the borders of the US is the Texas Virtual Border Watch program. Texas Governor Rick Perry enacted the program in conjunction with the Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition and Blue Servo ?, a privately held company. The program is designed to allow the public to participate in monitoring crime along the Texas-Mexico border.

Under the program, anyone with Internet access can become a “virtual deputy” by creating an account and logging on to the Blue Servo network. Once you have created an account, you can monitor the Texas-Mexico border 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The virtual deputies are able to see what’s going on at the border thanks to cameras that stream live from the border continuously.

When virtual deputies spot suspicious activity, they are able to report their findings to local country sheriffs via email. Emails coming in to the county sheriff’s are anonymous. Local authorities have responsibility for checking out all emails sent in, conducting investigations and taking appropriate actions.

The Texas Virtual Border Watch is like a community watch program on steroids. Since it’s inception in 2008, the program has had mixed reviews. As of April, 2010, just 26 arrests had been made as a result of information obtained through the program. At this point in time, just 29 of the projected 200 cameras had been installed. In order to defray costs, the plan for funding the program called for installing the cameras over a period of time.

Mixed Reviews

Those who criticize the program say that it is too expensive, considering a cost of $2 million just to get the program up and running. Proponents of the program say that the real benefit is in its ability for the cameras to deter criminal activity, which is difficult to measure.

In the first year, one major drug bust was completed because of the program, netting 540 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of a suspected drug smuggler. However, this appears to be the only significant arrest to come from the program.

Of course, any program like the Virtual Border Watch faces the inherent problem of timeliness. By the time law enforcement officers can retrieve emails sent by the public, and act on them, the suspicious activity is likely long over.

The program has also suffered from a waning interest by the public. When the site was initially launched, the website got millions of hits. It appeared that people from all over the US, and even abroad, were calling themselves virtual deputies. But, over time, interest in monitoring the site has fallen off.

There has not, however, been serious talk of discontinuing the program. When Blue Servo began working with the Texas government, they had plans to offset costs by selling advertising on the website. The site has continued to have benefits beyond those of the virtual border program, since it allows other groups, such as neighborhoods, to create their own virtual watch programs at no cost.

Reposting Scams

An uncomfortably large number of my Facebook friends seem to be extremely gullible and naive. I am going to have to give this some serious thought. They are way too willing to repost false statements on their walls without checking them out first. The one that really ticks me off are all the self righteous faux christians reposting the lie that Pepsi or dr. Pepper have cans with the Pledge of Allegiance on them and theat they deliberately left off the words “under God.” This is not true and yet I see this reposting almost ever day for weeks now.

If people judge you by the friends that you keep, I do not want other people to think that I am this stupid, too. I am seriously thinking about unfriending anyone who reposts these and just thinning out my list.

Who Sang That?

It is getting harder and harder to hear a song on the radio and find out who sang that song. The vocalists and bands almost never get introduced by a live disc jockey anymore. In fact, I rarely hear a live disc jockey on any of the local radio stations.

What ever happened to having radio personalities? They were half the fun of listening to the radio. And I want to know the name of the artist and the title of each song when it is played. What is so hard about that?

Its Better to Laugh Than to Cry

zanies

Some days I need an escape from all the drama. Spending ten bucks at the comedy club is a much better stress relief than taking prescription drugs for depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. It is always better to laugh than to cry. Trust me on this.

Utility Trailers

My Uncle Carl has several utility trailers at his place. He uses them to haul all kinds of things, from yard waste to motorcycles. So when I started thinking about getting a small trailer to use with my Mazda SUV, I figured he would be the one to ask for advice on what to look for and where to buy one at a fair price. Well, he invited me out to his house to look around and have a talk, which is always nice. He is a very cool guy and I was grateful to be invited over.

After we walked around the farm and talked for while, he told me that I don’t really need to buy my own utility trailer. Since he lives only about 15 minutes – 20, with traffic or school buses – away from me, he said that any time I need to need one for me to just come on over to his place and get one of his. He said that as long as I didn’t keep it for more than a day or two, that it should never be a problem for him. So, I am going to take him up on his offer and not buy my own. That’s so sweet of him!

Thumbs or Clouds?

I have to rethink my data backup process. For the past couple of years I have been using thumb drives or what they also call jump drives. This is easier and faster than the old way of using CDs or DVDs. But now I am hearing the IT guys talking about the Cloud and using the internet to back up their files.

I’m not sure sending everything important to me to a web server someplace is a good idea. What if they get hacked or go out of business? Then what do I do about retrieving my data? I think I will stick with the thumb drive for a while longer.

I Love My Vet

When I acted on a whim and got my dog, I had no idea how much time and money I was going to have to spend on taking care of her. She is a great dog, but I really have to work at caring for her, with grooming, flea and tick prevention, annual check ups and now allergies.

Evidently she is allergic to grass. It does not make her sneeze like humans do with grass allergies. It irritates her feet like acid when she walk on it. After we go for a walk in the yard and come back in the house, she immediately starts licking her feet. Sometimes she even chews on her feet to the point that they are bleeding.

I took her to the vet so he could check her and he helped me figure out that it is allergies. So I have had to start giving her foot baths at night and when they get very sore I put a special creme on them and cover them in bandages so she can’t lick off the creme before it has a chance to work. The vet says if they get too bad that I can bring her in for a shot, but that costs $60 and she would have to get the shot at least once a month.

I never heard of dogs having an allergy to grass until she started having the sore feet. Who knew?

Open Letter to My Friend

To respect your privacy, I’m not naming you. But I want you to know this:

Sorry to read this and that you are having a hard time right now and that you don’t think you have any friends. I do want to say that to have a good friend you have to BE a good friend.

A good friend is not someone that you lie to, steal from and only talk to when you want something. It’s a two way street. And there is a huge difference between being a friend who has your best interest at heart and being an ENABLER, even if you don’t realize it at the time.

Until you get serious help and beat your drug problem, you will never know who your real friends are – they are all just people for you to exploit.

I hope you take this to heart and get help from professionals – not the “help” from your sucker list that you just want to exploit.

Some of your friends want to help you in the true sense and see you happy and productive, and yet all you do is break their heart.

When you are ready to accept real help from a real friend, call me and I will come get you. We will figure something out together. You do have real friends and I want you to know that.

Surprise at Lunch

Today we were in Nashville for another trade show and my boss came up for the day. He took two of us out to lunch at one of my favorite Nashville restaurants, the Sunset Grill.

Every time I eat there we see a celebrity. Today we saw Bo Bice and he was nice enough to let me get this photo of my boss standing with him. Bo is a really nice guy and I really like his songs, too. We took one of me with Bo, but it turned out crappy and I deleted it. Just my luck! Maybe another time . . .

Dogs and Humans

The vet was telling me t dogs are a lot like humans in the diseases they can get and the treatments they can do. Did you know that the number 1 killer of dogs is cancer? I did not know that. I would have guessed car accidents or euthanasia from the dog pound.

Dogs can get diabetes and bleeding disorders and other things just like humans. I try to make sure none of my dogs develop weight issues. I keep them on a good diet and they get a lot of exercise, so I hope to have healthy dogs for a long time to come.
