Candles

Somewhere recently I read that over half of Americans have candles in their homes. I wonder if they are for emergency use or do people actually burn the candles on a casual basis?

I like to burn candles during the evening while watching TV or working on the internet. Usually I buy mine at WalMart for just a couple dollars. Lately they have been featuring a multipack of 2 large candles with 3 small votive candles for just $10. That is a really good deal and that many candles will usually last about a month with my casual evening use.

Of course, I keep a couple stashed for emergency use. If we were to get an ice storm or a tornado come through here, I might lose electricity for a few days. I could probably survive at home for up to a week if i had to, and the candles would have to be my source of light in an emergency.

Happy Birthday, Billy

Today is Billy’s birthday. It’s a big one – the number of years ends with an 0.

It seems like just yesterday Billy was riding his skateboard down the sidewalk and jumping the curb. And breaking his arm.

We used to worry about Billy – what would he do to earn a living? Obviously he’s not destined to be a pro skate boarder – and that about broke his heart! Turns out he likes running wire and cable and is a mighty fine electrician.

Happy Birthday, Billy!

New Year’s Promise

This new year is supposed to be one of great change and new hope for America. I plan to incorporate that into my own life, too. I am going to seriously search for a new job and if that means that I have to move to another part of the country, so be it. I want to find a job that I am good at and enjoy doing, and not just be a paycheck that keeps me trapped in a dysfunctional office. I already have some great ideas. . . .

Here’s hoping that we all have a very Happy New Year!

Santa is Coming to Town

Are you ready for Santa? Have you been good all year or just cleaned up your act these past couple weeks? Santa knows what you deserve and he’s coming to town tomorrow to reward you for your efforts.

I know Santa is bringing me lots of goodies. If you are one of my friends, then I’m sure you’ll get lots of goodies, too.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

A Little Luck

What brings you luck? Do you have a lucky item or charm that you carry or keep in a secret place? I have a lucky penny – I found it on the sidewalk a very long time ago and I have never spent it. I think that because the year it was made is the same year that I was born and that I found it makes it lucky. Do you have a story about something lucky?

New President – New Era for America

Our state did not vote for Obama but there were not enough red states to give McCain the win. Even though Obama won the election due to the electoral college votes, I hope he realizes that with this close an election, about half of the people that he has to lead did not vote for him and don’t want him as President. He has a lot to prove and a lot to overcome yet. I hope he can handle it.

Little Monsters

The streets were cluttered with kids going around the neighborhood searching for free candy until really late last night. I really wanted to go to bed early but the kids kept coming in waves so I answered the doorbell until almost 10 o’clock and had enough fun by thenso I turned out the porch light and brought the pumpkins inside for safety.

Earlier, there was a freaking caravan of cars lined up along the street, with the parents of the little monsters following along to make sure the kids stayed together and out of trouble. At least that’s what I’m saying is why they were in their cars. In reality, the lazy mofos were sitting their big butts in the car while the kids run up and down the walkways to make sure the kids didn’t snatched up by pervs or mugged by older kids who would steal their candy. Sick world we live in these days.

At least they kept the little monsters close so there wasn’t any vandalism. There are only two houses in my whole neighborhood that have little kids in them, so I wonder where these dozens of little monsters came from anyway.

Cafferty Cracks Me Up

Every once in a while I catch the Cafferty File on CNN and he always cracks me up. He can be so sarcastic and insulting, with such a sincere hangdog look on his face! He talked about the Presidential Race today, mostly insulting VP Candidate Palin. Although he make a lot of pointed barbs at Palin, his point was well taken. McCain could have picked anyone else from a large field of qualified people but chose Palin. That will probably be his downfall, which is a real shame. McCain would make a great President but that requires solid judgement and he is not demonstrating the ligh levels that we need. His choice of an inferior running mate was made for all the wrong reasons and, like Cafferty, I think that will cost him the election next week.

Funny Guy

There is a guy who writes a daily column for the online version of the daily newspaper in San Francisco. His name is Mark Morford. He is a very intelligent man with a cutting wit and I love to read his columns. I don’t always agree with him, but it is entertaining to read what he thinks about current events and issues.

Today’s column is about the remaining undecided voters for the upcoming election. It is less than 2 weeks away and he feels that everyone should have made up their minds by now. His assertion is that anyone who has not made up their mind must have very little minds with which to work. Very funny!

How to Win

There are a lot of games that I like to play. I’m a very competitive person by nature. I especially like one-on-one games where you don’t depend on anyone but yourself and you can get into the head of your opponent. Like Chess or Mastermind. I don’t like the games where cheating is rewarded, like Cribbage or Dominoes.

When I play, I like to win on my own strengths. Sure, sometimes I win because my opponent has made a mistake, is incompetent, or even had a run of bad luck. But those wins are not as satisfying to me as the ones where I truly play my best game and win on my superior strategy and game skills.

I wish the candidates felt that way about their campaigns. I’m about sick of the attacks on each other. That type of speech does not impress me at all.
