One of my friends is having a birthday today. I know she writes a blog – she has been writing one much longer and more regularly than I ever have. So I thought a quick Happy Birthday to Wendy is in order. We got a cake for her at work, and we will be having that in the Board Room after lunch today. I love birthdays at work! They put everyone in a good mood. Or maybe its the cake?
Thanks and Hate
My friend, Sheila, wrote a post on her blog yesterday that I though was about celebrating Thanksgiving, called “Giving Thanks?” but then after I read it, I realized that she makes some good points about how the Native American Indians might feel. I always thought that the first Thanksgiving was a good thing, but perhaps we did not get the whole story from our schoolbooks. I wonder if most Indians think that Thanksgiving was a day to celebrate? Or was it the beginning of their decimation as a race?
Happy Halloween
Columbus Day
For some reason, I totally forgot that today is Columbus Day. When you work in retail, holidays don’t have the same meaning as the white collar office rats or the blue collar workers. It is the weekend for big sales on mattresses and a variety of clothing and jewelry items.
I don’t care about the sales right now. What bothered me was not being able to go to the bank and get some cash out. It wasn’t until I pulled up to the drive up window and noticed that all was dark and abandoned that I realized it was a holiday.
Cooking from Scratch
This morning we have a lot of cooking to do, as we are all expected at my mother’s house for a family gathering. September is a big month for family birthdays, so a few years ago we decided to have one huge family party at my mother’s and each birthday person gets their own cake to blow out candles and we all pitch in to give each one a nice present that is opened in front of the whole crowd.
The big deal about the gathering, besides celebrating birthdays, is that everyone has to bring food with them and the food has to be prepared from scratch. No deli-bought potato salad and no store bought breads or frozen vegetables. I have to get to the store and buy some things and get busy in the kitchen.
Fireworks Tonight!
Memorial Day
We have the day off from work and a lot of people go away for a long weekend. This is Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer for a lot of places.
I drove by the veterans cemetery in Madison and was happy to see a flag and red flowers at every one of the soldiers white granite headstones.
Happy Easter
Tin Pan South
I’m headed for Nashville this afternoon for the Tin Pan South festival. This is the week that Nashville honors the songwriters. There are shows all over town at all the different kinds of show venues for gatherings of all the great and the new songwriters.
I have an all access pass, so I can go to any show that I want. This is going to be so much fun! Plus I get to see one of my Facebook friends, Wendy, while I’m in town. This is going to be a great week!
