Movies

We have been watching a whole lot of movies lately around our house. I am not quite sure why but I think it must be a lack of interesting things to watch on regular T.V. I think we have had our fill of repeat shows and we need something new.

Of course, I am looking forward to the NFL season coming up. The problem is that it has not arrived as of yet. Until then, I guess we’ll be found at the video store.

Birthdays

I just wanted everyone to know that today is the birthday of my brother’s latest girlfriend Heather. Her age is undisclosed as of now but it is generally believed that she is somewhere in her forties.

We plan to have a wonderful surprise for her tonight when she gets home. We have balloons and presents galore for her. We are all hoping that she will become part of the family soon.

St Patrick’s Day

It was one heck of a parade we saw yesterday. We went to Norfolk, Virginia to see the annual parade they have there. I had a great time watching all the bands and people going by. My favorites were the little cars that do tricks as they go by and the baton twirlers. . It was a great day.

We met some friends of mine while we were there and we all ganged up together and had quite a time. We went to the park afterwards and had a grand cookout. I love holidays like this and it was well worth all the time.

Concert Tickets

Post contributed by Leonard Phelps

My husband’s and my favorite band came to our neighboring city recently, and we were so excited to snag some tickets! The concert venue offered online ticketing, fortunately, since we heard that a lot of the people who showed up to purchase tickets were turned away. Evidently our favorite band is a lot of other people’s favorite band too, and a huge crowd gathered. I would have been so upset if I’d driven all the way in to town just to be turned away. Luckily, a few simple clicks delivered some tickets right to our email! I don’t know what I would have done otherwise. A while ago that wouldn’t have even been an option for us—until recently we didn’t have a home internet connection! Based on our location, which is very rural, we did not have many options for the service. Luckily my husband discovered hughesnet installation specialist in our area, and we were able to sign up. It’s made our life so much more convenient. It seems like such a small thing, but having access to the internet when you need it is huge!

Snacks for all

The super bowl is finally here. I have invited some of my closest friends over to watch the game with me. I have several that have already said they will attend. We plan to have plenty of food ready for everyone. I know they will enjoy that.

The game is always great and the half-time show should be enjoyable as well. It is always a good time for all. My house will be full and it is great to have company. This is a great land.

Ringing in the New Year with all of my loved ones

Guest post written by Cynthia Reynolds

It seems like the past couple of years we’ve had a lot of trouble getting the family together for New Year’s. We used to have these big parties when the kids were much younger, but they’ve all been doing their own thing in the recent past. So I planned months ago for us to host a little party at our house and have the kids invite some of their friends. They seemed receptive to it so that’s what we’re doing.

I’ve been planning out every single detail that I can find. While I was online looking up some of that stuff, I ran across the website miracle-ear.com. After I looked through it a little bit I decided to go and get fitted with some hearing aids.

I have found all kinds of neat ideas, including some games for the younger kids to play. It can be tough to keep kids occupied at things like that, but I’m really going to try and make sure that everyone has as good of a time as possible when they come to the party.

A shocker

The Detroit Lions are in a tough place right now. It seems that one of their players made a bonehead play and now they are paying the price. Ndamukong Suh decided to kick an opposing player at a key point in a game. This play cost the Lions points on the board and a chance to excel in their division.

The worst part is that the Lions will now have to do without their star player for at least two games. He is being suspended until the two game limit is reached. This will definitely have an impact on the lion’s season.

Hello NFL

The national Football league has decided to settle its dispute with the players and the games are finally on the way. The season starts this weekend and many people are waiting for it to start. I love the game of football and am glad that things are rolling again.

I am looking forward to sitting on the couch and watching a good game. My favorite team is the redskins and I am hoping they have a good year. I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens, but I am hoping for the best.

In memory of Reading Rainbow

Guest written by our friend Mario Reed

Reading Rainbow has been one of the most lively classical educational programs I’ve ever seen since my childhood or anyone’s around the 80’s through 90’s. I still get glimpses of all of its episodes on public television, even through new and improved satellite TV(expertsatellite.com!).

You have this guy, LeVar Burton, instilling in young and old viewers the joys of reading. He went to all sorts of places and did all sorts of cool things. He would always remember to bring in something to read that would be relevant to the episode, vividly narrated and illustrated on-screen.

A few of my favorite Reading Rainbow moments? I think I’d have to give that to Run DMC’s performance on the show, and the one episode where LeVar went to a renaissance faire.

One of the more memorable moments of the show included children recommending books to read. Their reviews were adorable and concise, followed with the three-note musical hit that somehow had that hypnotic effect on me while I was watching it.

Reading Rainbow is still classic today, and always will be, at least for me. The show got cancelled, can you believe it, and now I wait for something better to appear that I know will succeed Reading Rainbow in teaching kids the joys of reading.

That’s Racing

A lot of my friends are discovering NASCAR and becoming race fans. In fact, the most influential athlete in America was announced the other day – and it turns out to be a NASCAR driver. Wow – when I was a kid no one I knew ever watched NASCAR races – ow it seems that everyone is watching.

My idea of racing is drag racing – not going around and around in circles for 4 hours. I like a good drag race – it’s fast and dangerous and exciting to watch dozens of pairs of racers each hour take off and have a winner within a minute or two. Race a half mile and hit 100 mph? Now, that’s racing.
