Dead Money

I was shocked to read today that the U.S. government has been sending out checks to those who are deceased. It was found out that over the last three or four years; more than 20,000 checks were sent to dead people. This is the kind of waste that makes Americans angry. That’s not all of the news. Some checks were sent to convicted felons as well as deadbeat contractors.

The Obama administration is vowing to rectify the situation by creating a database that list the dead as well as felons and contractors that owe the government money. I hope this new system will save the poor taxpayers some of their hard earned money!

Indian Elephants

The land of India is home to many endangered species. While the tiger is probably the most famous, the elephant is high on the list. Male Indian elephants have valuable ivory tusks. This has caused poachers to target them instead of females that don’t have them. The ratio of male elephants to female is in some cases as much as 100-1.

Another problem the elephants are facing is the growing loss of habitat. Development has interfered with their traditional traveling corridors. Efforts are under way to help the elephants through a variety of methods by the Indian government. I hope these efforts will work and these wonderful animals can be saved.

Sleep Well

One thing that can be hard to do is to fall asleep at night. I have spent many hours tossing and turning when I should be getting the forty winks I need. I read articles today about how there are some foods that can help you get the sleep you need. I will list some of them now.

One food is actually a drink. Drinking tea before bed is an age-old sleep remedy my grandma used to use. Tea has thiamine that helps you get to bed. Another idea is to eat almonds. Bananas are also a good idea as well as oatmeal. I hope you can use one of these foods to help you sleep.

Electronic Recycling

One thing that I believe is really important is to make sure that you recycle your electronic items. Things like cell phones, televisions, and iPods contain many chemicals and other dangerous metals that can contaminate our ecosystem. By ensuring that these items are recycled, we can go a long way toward protecting our earth.

Here are a few tips to go by when recycling. Most stores nowadays offer free recycling programs. You can drop off your electronic devises at the store or send them back to the company that made them. There are also companies that will buy your electronic items that are still working. I hope everyone will take a little time to ensure they do their part in protecting our world!

A secure feeling

Anybody who knows me knows that one of the most important things to me is my family. I feel obligated to make sure they always come first in my life and are protected from any harm. That’s why I decided to get insurance. I want to be certain that if anything happens to me they will be able to go on without having to worry about financial issues.

I looked over the various possibilities and decided to purchase whole life insurance. This type of insurance will allow me to be covered for the remainder of my lifetime. I am also glad to know that the policy will build up a cash value over time that can be withdrawn if an emergency arises. I think it was a wise decision.

The best part about purchasing insurance is that it is easy to do. In most instances, you can get on the internet and receive an online quote. When you think about it, the cost of insurance is fairly cheap if you understand the security it provides. Knowing my loved ones are taken care of even if I’m not around allows me to sleep well at night. That’s a feeling that can’t be beat!

Battery Blues

One item that was recently in the news was all about button batteries. This type of battery is round and looks similar to a penny or other small coins. These batteries can be found in a number of products such as toys and cell phones. The problem is that they can be very dangerous to children.

Everyone knows that kids can get into everything. They also like to put things in their mouths. The problem is that these batteries can be a choking hazard to kids. They also pose a serious threat to your health if swallowed. Acids in the battery can become caustic and actually burn a hole right through your body. Notify authorities immediately if you suspect someone has swallowed a battery!

Food safety

There has been some debate lately over whether or not farmers should need licenses to sell small amounts of food. Vendors at farmers markets are pushing for deregulating strict laws that put an unfair burden on them they say. Selling a few of mom’s apple pies takes a lot of government red tape that makes it almost impossible for mom to make a few extra dollars.

Those in the food safety industry are saying that controls need to remain in place. They say food borne illnesses are a threat to the public and not having the ability to inspect where food is produced will hamper their ability to maintain public safety. Small food processors also say that they could lose thousands in sells to those who don’t have to pay for inspections.

Are There Safe Dog Treats Anymore?

About a year ago, I was devastated to find out the my dog’s favorite treat in the whole world, chicken jerky, was killing dogs. We found out that the treats were being made in China and the Chinese were adding something to the treats and other pet food that was poison to dogs. Everyone looked to the FDA to find out what was going on and to stop it, but the FDA didn’t seemed to worry about it, as it was dogs being poisoned, not humans.

Everyone eventually stopped buying the chicken jerky treats and passing the word along to other pet owners about the thousands of dog deaths and the stores stopped selling it. Notably, WalMart was one of the very last retailers to stop carrying the poisoned dog treats. That kinda pisses me off in itself. WalMart should have been the first to raise hell with the Chinese and make them clean up their act. But, no.

I have now become suspicious of any dog food or dog treat that is not made in the USA. I was OK with the fact that dog treats are made from the less desirable parts of the animals and that it was not human grade food going into the pet food and treats. But poison? No.

Have you found any dog treats that are made in the USA and are similar to the chicken jerky treats that we used to buy? I have seen some knock offs, but they are lying on the label, saying they are made in the USA when they are actually just packaged here. The poisoned dog treats are just being put in different packaging and using deceptive wording on the label to make you believe that they are not made in China. I’m too smart to fall for that bull shit.

I have money I am willing to spend on an American made, safe dog treat. Why isn’t someone making them and selling them?

Managing medicine

The world seems to be getting smaller all the time. I was just talking to one of my cousins who happens to live overseas. He was telling me about how his career in the medical field was going and he seems to be doing well. He is training to become a doctor someday but he has to go through a lot of training before he gets his license. He told me about some of the things he was doing.

The first thing he was very excited about was a course he was taking called the medical teaching course. It helps him learn about how to teach others in his field. He likes the class a lot and learned a few tricks that will help him in the future. He is also undergoing a consultant interview course. It helps him learn how to interview perspective personnel that he will be sure to hire in the future.

Just in case he is not busy enough, he is doing even more to advance his career. He has enrolled in a medical management course that keeps him on his toes about being in a position of authority. All in all, I think he is doing well and will become a great doctor. The world can always use people who are willing to help others.

Pants on fire

Sometimes strange things happen. I heard about a woman who went to the beach with her kids in California. The kids collected some colored rocks and gave them to their mother. The mother put the rocks in her pocket and they all went home. Upon arrival at their home the rocks caught on fire while in her pocket and gave her second and third degree burns.

Scientists are now studying the rocks and think they contain phosphorus which is used to make matches. Some believe the phosphorus is human made and are trying to figure out where it came from.
