Boating Heaven!

One of my favorite pastimes is to go boating. Ever since I was a young child, I have always enjoyed the water. I owe this to my parents who engrained the love of water in us. Some of my best memories involve being in the boat with my mom and dad. I remember when I learned to water-ski. It is something that I still enjoy doing today.

I like to take the kids out into the water as well. I hope to encourage them to learn how to swim and be safe in the water. I take them fishing and teach them all I know. I also like to put the boat into the water and just go explore. The river runs for miles and miles and I always like to see what is around the next corner. I’ll probably write more on this subject in the future as it is so close to my heart!

Catfish Day!!

By order of the president of the United States, Today marks another celebration of National Catfish Day. Proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the congress with a Joint Resolution, people around the world celebrate the benefits of farm grown catfish.

I must say that there are many recipes for catfish eating and the only one I’ve found that I like is the Cajun Catfish recipe. The spicier the better I say and that’s my final word!

Google Earth Rules!

One of my favorite websites is Google Earth. I really like having the ability to travel to almost anywhere on the planet right from my living room. I was checking out how the city of Rome looks, and also went to Naples as well. I really like the street level feature that it has. Seeing how things really look in another country is so cool!

I also like to check out my house as well. I have been able to scout out the surrounding area and found some shortcuts I may take when riding my bike. I also found a patch of woods that I may check out as well. I am always drawn to this site for some reason, I don’t know why, but I am!

A Day to Remember!

Happy Father’s Day Dad!

Hey Dad, I just wanted to spend a few moments and let you know how much I love you. You are always there for me when I need you and have never let me down! I hope you have a really great day and rest in the knowledge that you will always have my love!

Where are you George?

A man came up to me the other day and asked if I had a dollar to exchange with him. I thought it was a weird request and asked him why. He said the dollar he had would not go into the soda machine. I made the trade and examined the dollar. There was writing that said wheresgeorge.com on it. This explained why the machine would not take the bill, but a new mystery was started.

When I got home I looked up wheresgeorge.com and found that it was a site that tracks U.S. currency. Apparently a lot of information can be gleaned by tracing where money goes. Wanting to help, I registered the serial number of the bill as well as the series. I was shown a history of where the bill had been before me. I thought the whole thing was pretty neat and I’ll be keeping an eye out for another bill with the mark!

Our Pond

In our backyard, we have a pond. It’s a cement pond, as Jed Clampets from the Beverly Hillbillies would say, but it’s as good as any regular pond. As I grew up near the water, I always enjoy it. There is a fountain in the middle of the pond which sprays the water up in the air all day long. It cuts off sometime in the night and then it seems really quiet.

I always enjoy the pond and it seems to calm me down. There is something about water that makes me feel at home. I enjoy the animals that make their home in the water and they seem to get along together. The ducks stay together and the turtles float around with their heads stuck out of the water. You may see a snake once in a while, but don’t be alarmed as they usually go on their way. I am going to try a little fishing this year; I’ll let you know how that works out.

The Debate

Being as that I care about our earth and its environment, I tend to keep track of many issues related to energy, pollution, and our atmosphere. One of the big debates in our world is the making and use of ethanol. Ethanol is a corn based product that is turned into a gasoline additive. While many people agree it’s a good thing to reduce our use of fossil fuels, this may not be the best solution.

One of the problems associated with ethanol is that there are many negative effects. The use of farmland to grow the corn needed reduces the production of food. This in turn raises the price of food and has a great effect on the poorer people in the world. Another problem is the destruction of woodland to increase the farming area. This wholesale destruction of our forests has an unknown impact on our climate.

While I am glad that people are finally starting to realize the problems we face in the energy field, I think we need to further investigate our solutions. There are many aspects to everything we do and each thing needs to be considered carefully. I do not have the answers to our problems myself, but I would join with anyone who wants to sit down and try to figure them out.

Cans, Cans, Cans!

One thing that many people do not know about me is that I collect aluminum cans. I will tell you how it started. I have been known to drink a beer or two in my time and one day I noticed how many empty cans I had lying around. I knew about the scrap yard as I had been there many times. The idea hit me that I should take my cans in for money. That idea has paid off!

I am lucky to have enough room in my garage to store the cans until I have enough to take in. my buddy Richie drinks a lot and he saves his cans for me. Between my beer cans, Richie’s cans, and all the soda cans from the kids, I have collected up a lot of cans! I bag them up and take them to the scrap yard every couple of months. The last time I went I received $38 dollars for my trouble. That’s not a lot, but it is enough to buy a few more cases of beer! I think I’ll keep on collecting and making those few extra dollars!

Stop!!

Every one has a pet peeve that they like to carry around and vent about it whenever possible. I have one too. Mine is about people who drive while on their cell phone. This always drives me crazy whenever I see it. I think they should pass a law against it. People always seem to be distracted while on their phone and doubtless this has led to many accidents.

I know that at least one a week I witness a near accident and always see that one of the participants is on the phone. Driving a vehicle is a serious matter as people can easily be injured or killed in an auto accident. Not to mention the fact that people on phones are a major cause of traffic backups. I hope our state will pass a law against this unnecessary practice!
