Kill then shop

Today I played the Terminator in the back yard. The patio is all old brick, which was literally covered in heavy weeds. I used a great weed killer last year, that killed the weeds within an hour, but at the first sign of Spring, up came the weeds again, though the weed killer people promised a full year of no weed infestation.

The whole chore took a lot less time than I thought it would and I was rewarded with dying ( I thought I heard them screaming) weeds at a very rapid pace, and also a great start on my tan.

Tomorrow I go shopping for some top soil for the beds I dug up, and also I’d like to pick out some tomato plants and I saw an ad that there were garden hand tools of a good brand on sale at the tractor supply store that I go to. I’m sure I’ll find seeds and other plants I want though.

Envy Zinnias

Last summer I saved the zinnia seeds that are now three generations strong. 🙂 I planted green zinnias, that some seed company’s call “Envy” and others don’t even carry. Around here, or at least in the garden departments of the stores around here, the stores don’t carry them, that I have ever seen.

My seeds came from a friend who first found them in Ohio. I’m sure that there are places that readers will be able to go out right now and find, but to me, it’s all in the “seed seeking” and finding of these little green gems. I always dead head my zinnias and save the seeds, but I put the each color and size of the seeds into packets (easy to make one’s self and a great gardening tool) and mark them, so I know which I’m going to be growing, or relatively close to growing, what I marked on the package, since one never really knows for sure. To me, the seeds are more organized and I’m somewhat prepared. I think I’m going to be pretty sure what color and seed are going where. The green zinnias make an lovely contrast, also a great conversation piece in the gardens.

Picking out Pansy seeds

My oldest son has never taken an interest in any kind of gardening or plants until recently. It surprised me today while we were at the market and he stopped at the seed display, and immediately reached out and picked up a packet of mixed pansies. He said they would look good surrounding my big tree in the front yard. Since he has never showed an interest in my garden except to photograph flowers that were in interesting lite once in awhile, I never thought he noticed the pansies I had grown under the tree. I looked at the price and nixed it.

This particular store, raises the prices according to their idea of how much things cost, despite of the price on the package. That is why I rarely go shopping there. I knew I was going to Lowes this weekend, and they have seeds on sale. I’ll buy enough pansy’s to keep my son busy tending to the pansies this summer! Thinking about it, I might just take him into the garden supply section of the store. Maybe he’ll want some garden tools. 😉

Seeds and more seeds

While shopping yesterday, I came across seeds on sale, 10 packets for 1.00. ( I never can figure out why stores just don’t put a sign up that says, Seeds .10 a packet…marketing I guess… ) Now, I thought that something may be “wrong” with the seeds, but I checked the run date and it was for this year.

I had never heard of the brand name, but I figured that I’d try them in a certain plot I have and if I don’t see a growth process in a week or so, I’ll just replant. I only bought ten packets, and asked the “garden guy” how long the sale would be for. He told me that the price that the seeds were marked, in the price that the store will sell them for until they run out of seeds. So…I’ll take a shot with them and if they grow, I’ll go back and see if the store has any seeds left. It’s sort of a chancy decision, but what the heck?

Later today, I’m going on another seed shopping spree. I think I know of a place where I can get some heirloom seeds at a lower price than they usually are around here. Happy shopping to me!

Seeds and stones

I always carry a small leather pouch that I put seeds or small stones, feathers and anything else that may strike my fancy that I come across on my walks through fields, lanes and in the forest.

Needless to say, I have collected quite a few items that I NEEDED to bring home. I find this relaxing, and sometimes I get a surprise by the stone being semi precious, or a seed grows some sort of very unique flower or plant.

I have a special place in my house of the gifts Nature has given me. It makes one remember just how small we really are in this Universe.

News on bale gardening

Tomorrow I am getting the straw to get ready to start bale gardening. This is going to be interesting for me. I’m glad I have a couple blogging buddies to conspire with, while starting this. I think I’m going to start out smaller and less complicated than my original plans. This is not to say, I couldn’t do what I planned. But I have a feeling that I’m starting a bit too late. It’s going to be trial and error here on my part.

I’ve read a great deal on the subject of bale gardening. In fact I have poured over everything I could get my hands on to read and every video to watch. There is such a vast amount of ideas out there and some are really more complex that it seems to me it has to be.  I’m going to go on intuition with a few ideas I picked up from what I read, and then see how this project all turns out. I’ve got the seeds I need, and that is another start, besides getting the bales.

Actually, since spring fever has been hitting me right and left lately, I am really excited about starting on all of my ideas for the house and garden!

Seed catalog jackpot

Today when the mail man came, I went out to get the mail and thought I had hit the seed catalog jackpot! It really was a surprise. At first I thought my box was just filled with junk and the kid’s magazines, or my husbands junk mail. In actuality, among a few bills and some college info for the kids, there were eight new seed catalogs!

I’m sure the neighbors are used to me jumping up and down in the middle of the road either in total happiness and glee, or in ticked off anger if I get junk mail or a bill that I already paid and am battling about. But all day I’ve been in such a down and sad type mood, that I guess I really did the happy dance pretty well, because my neighbor came out and asked if I had won Publishers Clearing House or something similar. LOL!

Nope, simple seed catalogs were enough for me today, along with a mega hug from my daughter, to make the day much better. I have some work to do tonight, but ya’ll can bet that after I do what I have to do, I’ll be pouring through the catalogs and making lists, dog earring pages, circling prices and drooling over various flowers, herbs, plants, and garden plans!
