First Aid Tips

With so many accidents and injuries each year – an estimated 2.7 million hospital admissions in 2002 as a result of home and leisure accidents alone – it makes sense for everybody to have some first aid knowledge. Whilst nothing can replace a first aid training course, even just a little knowledge could help someone.

At SOS Claims we can help you in the aftermath of an accident, providing you with a second opinion regarding a personal injury claim, but we strongly advise you to look into one of the courses provided by the NHS Ambulance Service, St. John Ambulance, or the British Red Cross.

Some of the most common injuries which you might encounter are listed below, along with some first aid tips to help you.

Burns and scalds

Most commonly, burns are caused by heat, although chemical burns can also happen. If you are treating a chemical burn you should wear gloves to protect yourself. Rinse the burn with cold running water, and – if you know – tell the doctors or paramedics what it was that caused the burn.

For burns caused by heat, you should also run the affected area under cold water. You should never apply cream or lotion to burned skin, but something like a sterile dressing, or cling film, can be used to cover the area if necessary.

Bleeding

The NHS website points out that the aim of treating a bleeding wound is to prevent further bleeding and shock. There are a great number of injuries which may lead to blood loss, and not all of them can be treated in the same way. The important thing to remember is to protect your patient – and yourself – from further harm.

When treating a bleeding wound, wear gloves to prevent infection. Applying pressure and raising the area of the body that is wounded will both help to stem the bleeding. Care must be taken if there are any broken bones, or foreign objects in the wound.

Broken bones and fractures

If you are not a health care professional it can be difficult to know whether an injury has broken a bone – if in doubt, treat it as such. It is always better to be cautious. Depending on the extent of the injury, you may be able to take the patient to hospital yourself, but if the patient has a broken leg, or back, you must keep them still and wait for an ambulance.

Heart attack and stroke

The most common sign of a heart attack is chest pain. It often feels like a tight, or squeezing sensation. In some people the pain can also appear in the abdomen or arms.

If you suspect someone is having a heart attack, dial 999 immediately.

The NHS have publicised how to act FAST if someone is having a stroke. Is their Face showing signs of weakness? Do they have weakness in one Arm? Can they Speak clearly, and understand you? You may not have a lot of Time, so call 999 immediately.

If in doubt, always seek medical attention.

Thank a Veteran

If you are going out today, I hope you have the chance to partake in some of the ceremonies that are being held around the country, honoring our veterans. They deserve all the thanks we can give them! Thank you veterans, for your service and sacrifice.

We used to go to the Veteran’s Day parade held in the Washington DC area every year. It was great fun to see the marching bands and the floats. I think the one they had in Old Town Alexandria was probably one of the best. The variety of entries, from antique cars to gymnastics groups, made the parade very interesting and exciting.

And in comes November

Tonight it will be time to change our clocks back, which always messes with my internal time piece. But, since I can’t stop the months from flying by, and I do love the colors of fall and the other seasonal things that are associated with this month, I’d like to say welcome to Fall.

Isn’t it funny how the actual day to change the clocks back and forward seem to change each year? I never know if the time change will be the middle of October or the first week of November! All I know for sure is that when they do “fall back,” it gets dark before I leave work. I don’t like driving home in the dark. It makes me feel cheated of that little bit of daylight each afternoon.

Carving Our Pumpkin Today

Every year I buy a pumpkin to carve for Halloween from a local farmer who has a produce stand a few miles from my house. This year he had a small crop of pumpkins for sale, and they seemed to be a lot higher this year than last. I asked him about that and he said that the drought we had this summer really took a toll on his pumpkin crop. Evidently, the crop was only about one quarter of what it was last year, because growing big pumpkins requires a lot of water and we just did not have enough rain to make a good crop.

With that in mind, I had to decide if I wanted to be extravagant and buy a big one from the few, expensive big ones that he had, or settle for a smaller one that fit my budget. It also occurred to me that I could just not buy my pumpkin from him this year and go to WalMart to buy one for about ten bucks. But I really don’t want to give my money to WalMart when I have a good local option, and I believe in supporting the local businesses and farmers as much as possible. I decided to buy a smaller pumpkin and stick to my budget, and hope that next year’s crop is bigger and better for everyone.

I’m going to carve something like the design on this photo. I like the idea of a more intricate design than just a grinning face. I’m not sure how to make this work on a smaller pumpkin, but I guess I will figure it out tonight when I carve the pumpkin and put it out on my front porch.

Cookies

My oldest got wrangled into making 6 dozen cookies for a bake sale, and guess who really gets to make the cookies? If you guessed me then you win the prize which at this point would be a dozen cookies of your choice of either chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin, since those are the two kinds I am making for the bake sale.
As I am slaving away, my daughter is on the phone and has not helped one bit. If I thought I could get by with it I would just go to the store and buy the cookies and save myself a lot of work.

Soup is good comfort food

When it turns cold I tend to fix food more for the comfort and warmth than the ease of cooking. So I make a lot of soups and chili to keep on hand for the kids and for me too for that matter. Good wholesome warm food is always a good thing when the weather turns cold, last night I made a brisket in beer sauce it turned out fantastic and everyone loved it. The entire house smelled of the chili sauce in the recipe and when I walked in from work that was a very nice smell let me tell you. Today is going to be left-overs and soup so get ready it is a day of rest for me today.

Blueberry muffins

One of the special little treats we have from time to time are blueberry muffins. I really love them and the whole family really like the change of pace from regular bread. I make a few muffins and the rest of the batter I make into a loaf pan and it makes a very nice loaf of blueberry bread. We had some last night and the left overs have made a couple of very nice snacks today I think next time I will make banana bread muffins just as a change of pace from the blueberry muffins.

Blues

Have you listened to any of the really old Blues songs? There is a cable channel for different kinds of music and I found one that plays the Blues. I have never heard any of the songs they played, but I liked them. I especially want to hear more songs from Robert Johnson. Here is a YouTube video of one of his songs that I like a lot.

Fall

Fall is my favorite time of year, the kids are in school so I have a bit of free time during the day to keep caught up. The weather is wonderful with warm days and cool nights perfect for sleeping with the window open, and most of all it is the time of year that the leaves turn, the only downfall is that the leaves also fall into my yard and have to be raked up and hauled off. Other than that this is the best season by far. I can wait for the real cold weather I like it like it is now highs in the 60’s and the lows in the 40’s with fall getting the least amount of rain of all the seasons it is a perfect fit.

Sleepless night

Last night I had a terrible time falling asleep. I kept turning out the light and turning of the TV, then I would just lie in bed with my thoughts racing. So I tried to put infomercials on TV to bore me to sleep. But some of their stuff was pretty interesting and I couldn’t stop watching the show. So I didn’t get much sleep last night.
