Cold weather has moved in

Most people are saying the chilly weather we are now having feels great. I say I’m very cold and not enjoying it at all.

I believe if it wasn’t rainy and damp, this may be a refreshing change instead of having 105 degree temperatures for weeks, but it feels down right like a rainy fall. This rain has come too late for the farmers crops though. It’s sad

I can imagine what grocery prices are going to be like come winter…as if they weren’t high enough. It’s going to be a frugal winter.

Already August

I can’t believe it is August 1 already. Summer has flown by it seems. It’s still hot as blue blazes outside, and my gardens are all dead and have been since we are in the middle of a drought, but the fact that summer is nearly over just kind of amazes me in one way, and also makes me a bit sad.

My youngest son will soon be back in school…the battle of getting him up in the morning will begin. He is the roughest one to wake up and always has been.

Time for getting school clothes and supplies and also time for getting the house at least semi ready for winter. With the weather the way it has been all summer, it’s hard telling what the winter will bring.

Garden planning for next year

This years gardens and lawns did not do well at all. It’s sad because I had seeded, planted and even reseeded in hopes that my plants and flowers could or might do well despite of lack of rain. I was wrong. Even watering from the hose didn’t help.

I’ve been looking at various seeds and plants that might do well despite the lack of rain, in case next summer is anything like this summer has been. In our growing area, it’s pretty sparse pickings. No pun intended.

In the mean time, I’m trying to get the remodeling of my bathroom finished, so at least I’ll have the extra money to plant new flowers, plants and veggies next spring. Hopefully, that will be finished toward the middle of next month if all goes well with the plumbing. As far as my gardens go…I’m still trying to water, but it’s a loosing battle.

What is for supper

I hear this all the time. The problem is, since it’s summer and the temperatures have been as high as 105 degrees, I by no means what to fire up the oven. My gas grill isn’t working right and pure and simple, it’s just been too hot to cook.

I’ve been buying a lot of produce, fruits and also cold cuts for the family. The extent of my cooking lately has been to make things like potato salad, egg salad, tuna salad and ham salad. Oh yes, pasta salad of various sorts also is on the menu.

Tonight I’m going to suffer a bit and make a large supper. I plan on making a pork loin roast, a leafy salad, baked potatoes and also corn on the cob. At least that is the game plan. My husband bought me a very large floor fan for the kitchen and I’m going to try it out. Supper will be later than usual, since I’m going to wait until the sun is going down, but I don’t think anyone will complain. I’ll put out some light munchies to tide them over until my roast is done.

A break in the heat

Being outside today was a treat compared to how unbearable the the weather has been for nearly two weeks. 104 degree temperatures is just too dangerous and even the pool feels like bath water.

Yesterday we finally got some respite from the heat. It felt like it to us, though it was still 88 degrees. There was a nice breeze blowing and it did cool us off a bit.

My front yard looks brown and I can forget about even watering my flowers. They scorched from the sun and died. It’s sad to me, but I could have watered for hours and it would not have made much of a difference. The lawn is brown as is everyone’s around here and in town unless they had a good watering system, which is pricey. Next year I’ll do my gardens over and hope for the best.

Keeping cool and dirty pool water

We’ve been having record breaking high temperatures the last week and this coming week it’s supposed to be even hotter. Of course most of the US is like this, so it’s no big surprise. We all have been trying to find ways to keep cool.

For me, it was a matter of keeping the pool clean. The pool and pool accessory place that I go t to has been running out of chemicals I need. One would think that being in that kind of business, these people would be up on the weather situation and the need for stocking more supplies.

Because4 of the heat, covering the pool at night, just is making algae form very fast on the walls and bottom of the pool. Tonight, I’m not going to cover it and just run the filter and pump all night. I’ll see how that works. A good skimming a few times a day will help also. So stay cool, my friends.

Power needs from Generators AtoZ

While preparing for my daughter’s graduation party, I realized that we might need another generator for when the band sets up in our back lot, and so since I had heard about Generators AtoZ, I decided to check them out and find out what kind of prices they were there. I have to say that I was quite impressed by the range of generators they have and the prices. I think there is a generator for any kind of need a person my have.

We have a small generator that is sufficient to run enough power to some of the lights, the television and also refrigerator and a small chest freezer, in case we loose power, and that seems to have always been enough for us. In truth though, I have always wanted a back up generator in case something happened to our small one.

Living all these years where the winters can be long and sometimes very icy, means we loose power at least three times in the winter for durations of anywhere from a few minutes to days. A few hours is long enough for me not to have power. Looking at all the generators on this site I was told about, is making me know for sure that I want another power source other than what we have.

Rain storm coming in

What a difference from the sunny weather with warm temperatures we have had lately. The clouds are coming in fast, and despite of the forecasters saying that today was going to be sunny and the high of 80 degrees this afternoon, I think they screwed up a bit. I’m watching my barometer drop significantly, and even the air feels and smells like a storm is coming in, not just a small bit of rain.

I sort of catch a grin from the guys who are forecasting our local weather. While watching the news this afternoon, one could actually see the uncertainty in their faces, as the weather map says no rain and yet, the cloud system outside indicates other wise.

The only thing I fret about, is perhaps a tornado being blown in. It used to be that we had “seasons” for the destructive weather of this nature. Now, like the general weather, it’s anyone’s guess what is going to happen weather wise, from day to day. I’ll make the most of the rain though, as I have a feeling we are going to need it. I have rain barrels which after last years drought, I’m happy I bought.

Changes in the weather

Is warm weather coming early here, or is it just a tease? This is what I asked myself when I got up this morning and turned on the news and weather. Today when I went into town, it was sunny and about 45 degrees. Not bad, but would have been better had the wind not been blowing.

According to the weather report for the next few days, It looks as though it will get into the 60’s tomorrow, but there is also a chance of rain storms, which around here…might mean also a chance of tornadoes. Scary thought.

Weather like this though, makes me want to get out in my gardens and at least putz around… pull out anything dead or any of debris that has gathered. I’m itching for warmer weather to do this and start spring cleaning them. I have a feeling though, that because the weather has been so mild this winter, that summer is going to be a dangerous one. Lots of storms and tornadoes, or just the opposite and droughts. It wouldn’t be the first time that my feelings about such things were right.

Rain, Snow and Ice

Even though the temperature today was nearly like Spring, at about 8:00 pm it was raining and then it turned to wet snow. The old body sure can feel it too. ):

It is supposed to snow from today on. Everyone is so used to it not snowing, that to tell you the truth, even if I’m supposed to go to my Mom’s this weekend with my daughter and her boyfriend, who my Mom will just be meeting, I’m not sure I want to go. I mean, it would be a disappointment to her, as she is making all kinds of good things to eat, and I was going to go over my garden plans for her yard with her, but I don’t trust the other drivers. They just are spoiled by the odd weather and lack of snow and ice. It gets scary when drivers become complacent.

I went outdoors a little while ago, to let the dog out. He didn’t want to get his feet wet though. He’s really strange like that. I did notice that the temperature is dropping quite fast, and the winds are picking up. It is kind of doubtful that the kids will have school tomorrow. We have to be at the bus station by 2:00 and it’s out of State, where my Mom lives. I’m going to try and get an appointment for my daughter and I at the clinic, as soon as they open. I like the MD there and I just don’t want Mom and my daughter’s boyfriend to catch what we have. I’ll get some masks we can use, from the clinic. Hopefully we will be feeling up to par sooner than soon. I feel for my daughter. She had all kinds of plans to clean our “wing” and our rooms upstairs at Mom’s, but I seriously don’t think she feels much like doing anything. I personally have to tend to the plants and annuals I am growing inside, when I was told they would never grow in the house. Pfffttt… they are inpatients and are starting to be turning into very long vines with flowers all over. I’m going to need a bigger elevated pot for them come Spring, but they are still going to stay inside. I’ll take them out for fresh air, now and then, but now they are used to being inside in my bedroom. Apparently they love it in there as much as I do!
