Possibilities of a small pond

Kicking around the possibility of a small pond has been on my mind lately. We have enough room on our lot out in the back yard, and I would really love to see what I could do when it comes to landscaping around a pond.

I don’t want a really big pond. A small one, stocked with some fish and water critters would work just fine for me. My dog could swim in it, and I wouldn’t have to worry like I do if he goes into the pool. I am afraid one of these days he is going to rip the liner, and in a pond there isn’t that worry. He loves the water and since the temperature hasn’t budged below 85 degrees in the last few weeks, it would be a great respite from the heat for my little guy.

Of course, I’ve not mentioned my idea to my husband yet. I have to come up with some very good pros, to counter his cons. We’ll see what happens, but I would indeed love to have a small pond.

Keeping the cats out of the gardens

I have a problem keeping the cats out of my gardens and it’s starting to get super irritating, not to mention ticking me off to no end. When the kittens we have (that were drop offs) are a little bit bigger, I don’t like to do this, but I’m taking them to the humane society. I have to. Everyone drops off unwanted cats and kittens at my house and there is not a thing I can do about it since they are dropped off in the night.

I am thinking about using chicken wire and laying it over the spaces and beds that I have seeded, and then anchor it down, until I can fix the cat problem. They are using my gardens for a giant litter box, and since I don’t have cats in the house that have to have a litter box, I sure as heck am not going to have them outside ruining my gardens.

People who abandon animals, should be fined or in my opinion be arrested, but without catching them in the act there is nothing to be done. It’s so sad.

Needing kid and dog gates

I thought my days of baby gates were well over, until I got a call from my younger sister, who lives out of  State. It appears she is coming up here to visit some of the kid museums, the zoo that is up north a ways from us, and in general find another way to spoil her grand children, ( I do believe there are five of them, all under the age of 10 years old. This is going to be a scary experience for me, and by the time the stay here is over,  it will no doubt had been a bit scary for some of them also. For the most part the kids all but maybe 1 really likes Great Auntie. Problem is my sister. She may mean well, but it only goes so far.

My sister asked  if I will  lock my dog up in one of our bedrooms, since one of her grands were afraid my dog Jasper. She says Jasper bit her. My kid saw her hit Jasper with a stick on his nose. Jasp thought the kid wanted him to play tug o war and grabbed “his end” to pull. So this is when I told her about Kidco Gate Shop and the fact that they are into safety. I however, made it clear that while shopping for gates, to keep in mind that they were for the safety of Jasper, our family member also. She got my point.

I’m not too terribly worried about this visit. I told my sister, if she didn’t know what kind of gates to get, to read the Safety Gate Guide and Tips. Hopefully she will  envision what gates she would need in her own home and realize that it’s possible that what happened to my Jasper, could be happening to her own two “Fur Babies” as she calls them. She has to put them in her bedroom when the grands come over. I wish I would have known about this shop a long time ago.

Crazy weather

The telephone woke me up at 5:30 this morning. It was to tell me that the kid’s school had a two hour delay because of the fog. I didn’t expect fog, since it had just snowed the day before yesterday.

After I turned on the news, I let the dog outside to do his business, it literally felt like Spring out doors. It was raining and foggy, yes it was that, but the porch thermometer read 52 degrees. This is January! I couldn’t believe it.

I sat with my tea watching the news and weather report and indeed it was about 52 degrees. All of a sudden, I saw lightening, then heard the thunder. I jumped, since it startled me and spilled my tea all over the sofa. I had to get stain remover today when I went into town. The weather report said that the temps were supposed to drop drastically and we were going to have snow. I stocked up on some items we use a lot of, just in case. Also more lamp oil and candles. Things like that, which come in so handy if the power goes out. I spent way too much money today, but just in case items seem to cost more when not planned. It is snowing now and the temperature dropped steady every hour today.

Raking leftover leaves

It finally warmed up and dried out enough outside to finish raking all the leftover leaves in the yard. A few years ago, it used to be my kids who loved to jump and play in the big piles of leaves. This afternoon I finished raking and went inside to get a cup of tea. I heard my dog barking out in front. When I went to the door, there he was having the time of his life jumping and rolling in the leaves, then barking when the leaves blew into the driveway. I wish I would have videoed it. He’s so darn strange sometimes!

Snow is coming

After letting my dog out this morning, I noticed that the ground wasn’t just covered with frost. It must have snowed sometime during the night. I’ve definitely got to get ready for the next snow to come. My dog loves the snow. He would rather be outside in the winter, than inside. Crazy dog.

Thinking about a new addition

With a title like that, some would think I was going to add on to my home. Not the case. I’m seriously thinking about adopting another dog. What started out as MY cocker spaniel pup, has turned out to be totally in love with my husband. He was a gift from my good friend Amy, and she brought him to me as a small bundle of joy. I trained him, took care of him, taught him, love him and yes…he does listen to me, but he is totally loyal and in love with my husband to the point of nearly puky. LOL! To be honest, I feel a bit betrayed and sad. Okay, maybe that is selfish thinking. I still can’t help it and can’t help feeling that I want a buddy, pal and best fur friend, besides my horse and cat. Oh the cocker loves me, of course. But not the way he loves my husband. Guess some fur people are like that to certain human people. So, I’ve been checking our local shelter once a week. I think I want another Shepard. Not sure what our little guy will think, and even though he is four years old, well…it’s hard telling with him, if he’d like another dog on his turf. He has a mind of his own.

Busy,busy, busy

It’s been one heck of a week. I’ve been bagging up my summer clothes, and then hauling them up to the attic. Getting back out the ones I will keep and wear in the winter and in general putting clothes in bags to take to some charities I know that will help others with them. It’s a LOT of work, but I’m happy to do it. And then…go figure, not that I’m complaining, the weather here has been in the high 70’s and even up to 82 degrees all week and it’s supposed to last at least until the middle of next week. I’m not complain though. I love what we call Indian Summer and it’s great to be able to get out in the sunshine. I even got tan from taking the dogs for long walks the past couple days. I think they are wondering what is wrong with me, walking so far. They get tired before I do and want to go home. LOL!

To the vets we go

My Cocker needs to go to the vet, and both of us are dreading it. He has what is called, “cherry eye”, meaning the lower lid, (Cocker spaniels have two on each eye), sort of popped out. It’s not harmful and there virtually is nothing to be done about it, but he needs it looked at about twice a year. It’s a hereditary condition, and the vet could put a small stitch in it to hold it in place, but 8 times out of 10, the stitch doesn’t hold. His eyesight isn’t threatened enough for him to have this surgery and believe me, it is very pricey. So, we’ll go to the vet, get him checked out, and he’ll cop an attitude with me for a few days, as he always does. This guy has a mind of his own and sometimes it’s scary how human he can be.

Time is flying

This week has gone by so fast. I’ve been pretty busy with the kids, the animals and just “stuff” in general. Hopefully in the next few days, I’ll be able to kick back for awhile finish some of the projects I’ve started around here. The bathroom needs work and I’d like to paint my office. I have some sewing projects that need finished also.
