Crazy weather

The telephone woke me up at 5:30 this morning. It was to tell me that the kid’s school had a two hour delay because of the fog. I didn’t expect fog, since it had just snowed the day before yesterday.

After I turned on the news, I let the dog outside to do his business, it literally felt like Spring out doors. It was raining and foggy, yes it was that, but the porch thermometer read 52 degrees. This is January! I couldn’t believe it.

I sat with my tea watching the news and weather report and indeed it was about 52 degrees. All of a sudden, I saw lightening, then heard the thunder. I jumped, since it startled me and spilled my tea all over the sofa. I had to get stain remover today when I went into town. The weather report said that the temps were supposed to drop drastically and we were going to have snow. I stocked up on some items we use a lot of, just in case. Also more lamp oil and candles. Things like that, which come in so handy if the power goes out. I spent way too much money today, but just in case items seem to cost more when not planned. It is snowing now and the temperature dropped steady every hour today.

Flooding and then ice

It’s been raining for days and our back yard now looks like a pond. This isn’t an exaggeration either. Yesterday the temperature dropped drastically and it all froze. I know if the kids were younger, they would be outside ice skating and having a riot. Me? I’m going into hibernation until the warm weather comes again.

Raking leftover leaves

It finally warmed up and dried out enough outside to finish raking all the leftover leaves in the yard. A few years ago, it used to be my kids who loved to jump and play in the big piles of leaves. This afternoon I finished raking and went inside to get a cup of tea. I heard my dog barking out in front. When I went to the door, there he was having the time of his life jumping and rolling in the leaves, then barking when the leaves blew into the driveway. I wish I would have videoed it. He’s so darn strange sometimes!

Weather guessers

Well, the weather man said that the weekend would warm up, but it sure didn’t do it. In fact last night it got down to 30 degrees and we had frost on the ground this morning. It actually felt icy cold with the wind, even though the sun did shine. Guess it’s time to dig out the heavy duty winter wear sooner than I had thought. I so do not like the cold and winter. I think I get cases of that condition literally named SAD. I forget what the letters stand for and too lazy right now to look it up, but it’s pretty much an appropriate abbreviation for the meaning.

Pretty Themes

When I set up my blog I picked a theme from a small list and thought it was something I did not have to deal with anymore. But then I found a nice theme that “felt” more like the real me, so I downloaded the other theme and changed it out. Now my girlfriend Sherri has found a new theme for her blog and I am so jealous! I really like the bright colors and happy vibe. So maybe I’ll be theme shopping again tonight and find a new “look” for myself, too.

Here we are, heading into fall with everything in nature turning color and changing to prepare for winter. I think I’ll take my clue from Mother Nature and change my colors. I hope this Autumn is beautiful, and I am going to make a serious effort to get outdoors and appreciate it.

Watching the stars

I love to lay out in the back yard and look at the stars. Lately there have been a whole lot of meteor showers. I always thought they generally happened in later September or in early October, but apparently this is not the case. There simply can’t be that many shooting and falling stars. Or can there be, considering how much stuff they have shot up into the air for so long, that actually don’t belong up there.

An unexpected plant

I’ve just about given up on my garden. It looks terrible as we haven’t had rain and with the water bill as it is, due to filling the pool and the kids taking cold showers, plus laundry and just in general using lots of water this summer, I really can’t afford to water the gardens like they should be. I did however walk out into the back yard, and we have bales of straw back there to be burned when we get some rain and the fields, trees and grass aren’t so dry. I had looked out the window and saw orange “somethings” way out back, so when I walked out there to see what they were, they turned out to be flowers which are HUGH and beautiful, and a very large pumpkin plant! There is a little pumpkin growing on it also. My blogging buddy told me about her bale gardening, and her grandson’s pumpkins along with her other plants, and I thought it was a strange way of doing things, but had told my son about it. Now I’m wondering if my son had stuck a seed in that bale of straw just to see if it would grow. I might do this next year!

Misery

I never thought that I would admit this, considering my love for the summer and warm weather. It’s too hot. Terribly hot and all day I have felt sick to my stomach. I’ve been drinking a large amount of Powerade to replenish electrolytes and it has the sodium I need also. I’m to get lab work done tomorrow to make sure my sodium levels are not dropping, or I’ll end up in the hospital with an IV drip. The dogs are miserable and so is everyone else. We need rain badly, and even though storms where in the forecast, there isn’t a could in the sky and even the breeze we do have, feels like an oven being opened after it’s preheated. My husband took two of the kids swimming at my friends. She had called and asked if I wanted to come over earlier, but I felt so sick and puky I didn’t go. From what I’ve seen on the news it’s like this all over. I wish it would rain. It sure would be welcomed.

It’s heating up

It seems the weather is doing some drastic things all over the US. Here it’s starting to heat up and we really need the rain. I’m feeling very sorry for the farmers all over, as first around here it was too wet to get into the fields, so crops were planted late. Now, the corn is “reaching” for rain and it’s sad to see that the crops are not doing well at all. It also makes me really worry about what the prices of groceries are going to be in the year to come. I can’t believe how high prices are now anyway. I’m glad I watched my Mom cook while growing up. She can make something really good out of nothing, as we tell her. 🙂

Flowers and vines

My gardens seem to be coming along nicely! I love the fact that I started much earlier than I normally do, and had the time to do it. Now, if I can keep the dogs and the cats from tearing everything up, I’ll be a happy camper! We’ll have to wait and see how that goes. I’m thinking about planting more things in the front yard and also getting some potted plants to hang on the porch and set in various locations on the decks!
