Blues

Have you listened to any of the really old Blues songs? There is a cable channel for different kinds of music and I found one that plays the Blues. I have never heard any of the songs they played, but I liked them. I especially want to hear more songs from Robert Johnson. Here is a YouTube video of one of his songs that I like a lot.

Elvis Presley is and always will be the King

It took me a while to warm up to Elvis Presley. C’mon I’m just being honest. When I was younger I felt like I couldn’t fully embrace him because he was from my parents generation. Well it didn’t take long for the music to take a hold of me after my parents constantly played it on the old turntable. And the more I learned about Elvis and what he accomplished coming from nothing the more I started to dig him as a persona and more importantly his music.

Presley’s rise to national attention came in 1956 and as soon as he popped up he transformed the field of popular music and had a huge effect on the broader scope of popular culture. As the catalyst for the cultural revolution that was rock and roll, he was central not only to defining it as a musical genre but in making it a touchstone of youth culture and rebellious attitude. I can remember hearing about his appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and the camera would only show Elvis from the waist up because the censors considered his dancing to be too wild.

Elvis was notorious for giving credit for his musical influence to many black rock and roll and jazz performers before him. And rock and roll’s occupation of a central position in mainstream American culture facilitated a new acceptance and appreciation of black culture because of Elvis’s music. Little Richard even said famously that “He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn’t let black music through. He opened the door for black music.” His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture. And in my option, like him or not, that makes Elvis Presley pretty darned rock and roll.

Home automation and awsome renovtions to a home

Through out most of my blog I’ve mentioned in blog posts that I would love to have a place for my sons to play their music, and have other innovations added to my house. I was doing the hit and miss play on words to find a sight that was what I was really looking for. One of the sites I happened to land on was, home theater scottsdale. Of course I clicked on this since how great would it be to have a big theater, since the guys like to have a get together and watch their music movies and such. All of this keeps running through my mind and of course the financial aspect comes to mind also. It is home improvement, a great asset and may even help with bringing the family closer together. At least in my way of thinking.

What I totally am into is the home automation scottsdale. Truth be known it totally blew me away to know what this company can do for a home and also for the residents…especially me! Unreal! Everything from control of the music in the whole house, the movies and video. To security, lighting and oh shoot, the list goes on. I actually have to say that I’ve visited a lot of sites on my own and some that friends have recommended to me, but this one did indeed strike my fancy. I don’t generally rave about businesses, but then now and again one comes across and just flat intrigues me.

I really would love to have all of these home improvement ideas in my house. Unfortunately Scottsdale is a very  long way from here. But ya’ll living down that way, check it out. Like I’ve said, I’ve been wanting this this kind of innovation in my home for a long time. I love the whole concept.

Great Movies this Year for the Holidays

Going to the movie theater is something that I seem to have gotten away from and today I just realized how much I miss it. There is nothing like watching a movie in a big, dark theater with a hundred other people enjoying the action of the big screen with Dolby surround sound. I think it is cool to hear others gasp in surprise or laugh at the funny scenes. It adds to the viewing experience.

This year there are a lot of movies that sound really good scheduled for release in December. I guess they want to get people who are home from college and out of school for the holidays to spend some of their free time and money in the movie theaters. The one that I really want to see is the new James Bond movie, “Skyfall.” And of course I want to see “The Hobbit.”

If we don’t have a lot of bad weather this year I hope to make the trip to town a few times just for fun and watching movies. I won’t risk wrecking the car on snow and ice covered roads, but if the roads are clear I feel a big urge to get out of the house this winter and be around people and having fun. The movies are a great way to get me motivated and if I skip the popcorn and over priced sodas, I can budget for a couple of new release films and maybe invite a girlfriend or neighbor to come along with me.

RIP Mr. Jonathon Frid

Having been one of those people who used to take short cuts and drive too fast on country roads, ( years ago )…Needless to say, I was really into Dark Shadows, and Barnabas Collins.

Of course, I saw it on the news when it hit the television. It made me feel nostalgic and actually, really old. I shook it off and gave it an, “It is what it is,” shrug. I am however going to order the whole series.  It’s pricy, but the way I figure it, I think it would be really great to have some old friends who I never lost touch with while growing up and growing older. We were all total fans of Dark Shadows. I’m sure that it would be an awesome girls night and slumber party.
