Between cookies for the family and pies for the dinner at Steve’s house tomorrow I have been in the kitchen all day long. I do not mind I love to bake and I have had help today, my 6 year old Grandson David has been helping and if you have a 6 year old you know that it will take me longer to clean up the mess than it took to bake the cookies, but I do not mind it was a pleasant experience watching him absorb the cookie making process, and it will not be long and he will be ready to make cookies himself. A man that can cook is always a plus around the house. I think we are ready for Santa to visit tonight and I can not wait for the presents.
A mouse in the house
I just spoke to my mom about an hour ago, because she called to make sure I was coming home to her house. Then she called back to tell me that she has been trying to capture a mouse that is in her house, all day long. Apparently she can’t set the traps. I personally don’t like to kill mice. I think they are cute, and that is a cat’s job. I’ve never had a mouse in the house. I had to assure her that my husband would set her traps for her, since she is afraid of the little thing getting into her pantry and eating her dried goods. I can tell by her voice that the hunt for the mouse is now on. This should be a trip, to say the least!!
Organizing the Spice Cupboard
This morning while I was looking for some cinnamon, I decided that I was in dire need of some kitchen spice racks. I opened the cupboard and I had an avalanche of spices fall out of it. My kids are all teenagers, or out of their teens now, and they have started to try their hand at cooking. Needless to say, they don’t put my spices back in the cupboard the way I like to have them, and since I have literally nearly every spice one can imagine, when they are finished cooking I can’t find what I’m looking for.
I have one wall in my kitchen, that I think a big wall spice rack would look great on and the spices would be organized plus close at hand for everyone to use. I like the idea of the spices to be displayed so we wouldn’t have to dig through the cupboard to find what we are looking for. I’m thinking about getting one for my baking spices, and then my cooking spices. Perhaps even one that would hold the various oils I use when I make candy.
My mom has some really nice looking spice racks that my sister got her for her birthday, and since she doesn’t have a whole lot of cupboard space, she has hung hers on the wall where everything is handy for her. I’m looking forward to getting rid of the clutter and have my spices organized.
Razor strops
Have you ever gone to a barber shop and watched a barber use a straight razor to shave a man? Have you ever wondered where the barber got his supplies for wiping that razor back and forth on a piece of leather, and what that piece of leather was called? Well, I found out that piece of leather is called a leather strop when I stumbled upon a website that discussed these straight razor designs products for sale. I found the website by accident when I was looking for a new razor-cut hairstyle to consider the next time I go to my hair stylist! Isn’t it strange how sometimes you will do a Google search for something and find other stuff that you would not expect to find!
Banana bread
I made some very good Banana bread muffins for supper last night and they were gone by morning, I love to bake and Banana bread is one of the best things that my family really likes a lot. Big guy like the blueberry muffins the best but for the rest of us Banana bread and muffins is the way to go, and by the way he eats his share of the Banana bread and muffins just like the rest of us. I guess I will have to make some blueberry muffins soon enough, got to keep everyone happy it’s the mom’s job you know.
Information Highway Helps With Shopping
One of the ways that the Internet can be helpful is to compare options from different places without feeling a lot of high pressure from someone. I always hate it when I have to buy something “big” like an insurance policy, or a new car. So I like it when I can find a website, like the one that allred insurance burlington nc put up that will answer a lot of my questions without me actually having to talk to a person. My shopping around is a lot easier with the Internet’s help!
Portable battery chargers
My son was taking photos with my camera and even though I had bought really good battery’s they kept dying on him. He told me that I should get a portable USB charger battery. It made sense to me. With all the new items we have in the house and in the vehicles, getting one of the chargers would help a lot and cut down on the cost of having to keep buying batteries. I can’t believe the price of good batteries now and I really can’t afford to keep buying them. My camera was a major big deal to me, and I could not understand why the batteries kept being literally sucked dry.
I think my son’s suggestion is a good one, so I’m going to check it out. Certainly it will be less expensive than having to shell out money for all kinds of batteries like I have been doing. These would even help with cell phones dying and my laptop computer running out of power also. They work with MP3 players, iPods and other electronic items that the kids have. It gets to be an expensive pain, every time I have to run out to the store or shell out money for new batteries. So, I’m going to look into my son’s suggestion.
A five string guitar?
I have never heard of, or seen, a jackson bass guitar before I watched this YouTube video a few moments ago. I was really surprised to learn that the guitar in the video has five strings! I was pretty sure that guitars had either four or six strings before I watched the video. I even went onto Wikipedia just now and typed in how many strings does a guitar have, and their definition does not include five strings! How very interesting!
First Aid Tips

With so many accidents and injuries each year – an estimated 2.7 million hospital admissions in 2002 as a result of home and leisure accidents alone – it makes sense for everybody to have some first aid knowledge. Whilst nothing can replace a first aid training course, even just a little knowledge could help someone.
At SOS Claims we can help you in the aftermath of an accident, providing you with a second opinion regarding a personal injury claim, but we strongly advise you to look into one of the courses provided by the NHS Ambulance Service, St. John Ambulance, or the British Red Cross.
Some of the most common injuries which you might encounter are listed below, along with some first aid tips to help you.
Burns and scalds
Most commonly, burns are caused by heat, although chemical burns can also happen. If you are treating a chemical burn you should wear gloves to protect yourself. Rinse the burn with cold running water, and – if you know – tell the doctors or paramedics what it was that caused the burn.
For burns caused by heat, you should also run the affected area under cold water. You should never apply cream or lotion to burned skin, but something like a sterile dressing, or cling film, can be used to cover the area if necessary.
Bleeding
The NHS website points out that the aim of treating a bleeding wound is to prevent further bleeding and shock. There are a great number of injuries which may lead to blood loss, and not all of them can be treated in the same way. The important thing to remember is to protect your patient – and yourself – from further harm.
When treating a bleeding wound, wear gloves to prevent infection. Applying pressure and raising the area of the body that is wounded will both help to stem the bleeding. Care must be taken if there are any broken bones, or foreign objects in the wound.
Broken bones and fractures
If you are not a health care professional it can be difficult to know whether an injury has broken a bone – if in doubt, treat it as such. It is always better to be cautious. Depending on the extent of the injury, you may be able to take the patient to hospital yourself, but if the patient has a broken leg, or back, you must keep them still and wait for an ambulance.
Heart attack and stroke
The most common sign of a heart attack is chest pain. It often feels like a tight, or squeezing sensation. In some people the pain can also appear in the abdomen or arms.
If you suspect someone is having a heart attack, dial 999 immediately.
The NHS have publicised how to act FAST if someone is having a stroke. Is their Face showing signs of weakness? Do they have weakness in one Arm? Can they Speak clearly, and understand you? You may not have a lot of Time, so call 999 immediately.
If in doubt, always seek medical attention.
Thank a Veteran
If you are going out today, I hope you have the chance to partake in some of the ceremonies that are being held around the country, honoring our veterans. They deserve all the thanks we can give them! Thank you veterans, for your service and sacrifice.
We used to go to the Veteran’s Day parade held in the Washington DC area every year. It was great fun to see the marching bands and the floats. I think the one they had in Old Town Alexandria was probably one of the best. The variety of entries, from antique cars to gymnastics groups, made the parade very interesting and exciting.
