I need some safety glasses

My friend that is a cop wears safety glasses instead of just regular sunglasses.  He feels that in his line of work, he has a good change of something getting through a regular pair of sunglasses so it’s safety glasses or nothing for him.  See what happened once is he was with his partner and there was this nut with a shot gun shooting up a house.  They were the ones that were the first responders.  The guy turned the gun on their vehicle and shot.  The driver side glass shattered and a piece of it hit his partners glasses and a piece of his glasses went into his eye.  He ended up losing his eye and his job.  Now he’s stuck on a desk for the rest of his career or until something else comes along.

It’s a shame that happened to his partner because they were as close as brothers which usually happens with partners on the police force like that.  Because of that, my friend always wears safety glasses and the best part of these is they don’t look like safety glasses.  They look like regular sunglasses and stylish ones at that.  The price was great too.  They offer much more than just safety glasses too.  I have to wear them on the job so I’m trusting my eyes to the ones like he gets.

This is a first for me

I have never worked enough to have to file taxes but this year is the first year I had to do it.  I had no idea how to even start.  Thank God for Breanna.  She is so smart about things like this.  She showed me how to go online and put all of my information in and file right on the computer.  She also told me that I could take my tools, work boots, and even work clothes off on my taxes too.  She saved me a bundle on my taxes.

They don’t give a single young person very many exemptions and that usually means we end up having to pay.  Well thanks to Breanna, I don’t have to pay and will even get back something.  Oh sure it’s only $19 but hey, that’s a refund!!  That’s a lot better than having to pay, ya know.

In like a lion, out like a lamb

Coming from the south there are all kinds of ‘sayings’ like ‘If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.’  That seems to be the case this year for sure because the beginning of March was awful.  It was cold, nasty and even snowed.  Well it’s beautiful today so that old saying held true this year.  I never paid much attention in years past to see if it was true then or not.  That might be something I try to keep track of to see if that and other ‘old sayings’ have any truth to them.

Oh guess what, a couple of guys did get laid off last Friday.  Man I hated that for them too.  I just hope I’m not next but if I am, I’ll make it someway.  I always seem to land on my feet and sure hope that continues!!!  The unemployment rate across the country is at it’s highest since I was pretty young.  Breanna and I have been saving as much as we possibly can from the little side jobs I get here and there so that money might hold me over if I should get laid off.  Cross your fingers for me that I’m not next.

This is awful news

Here I am worried that I might lose my job and the good people of Alabama suffered a terrible fate.  Two tornadoes touched down in the town of Magee.  Thank God there was no loss of life but a lot of people lost absolutely everything.  With the economy like it is, what a crying shame that this has to happen now of all times.  Boy does my heart go out to all of the people affected by this terrible storm.

I guess I should be thankful that even if I do lose my job, I at least have side work that I can do.  These people don’t hardly even have a town left in which to work in.   There was one person that had to be airlifted to the University of Mississippi in Jacksonville and my thoughts and prayers are with them and their family.  I wish them a speedy recovery.

Work is slowing down

The economy is starting to affect the company I work for now.  Work is really slowing down.  There aren’t as many new home constructions or commercial construction going on either.  Housing prices are dropping every day it seems where people are trying to sell their houses instead of losing them to foreclosures.  I feel so sorry for those people that have worked so hard to have something to watch it all crumble away.

They have been talking about maybe having to start laying some people off at work.  I’m not the last guy hired but I’m not on top either.  I think there are just three other guys that were hired under me that do basically what I do so hopefully none of us will get laid off but if there is a lay off, I just hope and pray one of them is not me!

Happy Birthday to my Breanna

Today is Breanna’s birthday and I have something extra special planned for us to do.  I’m taking her out to dinner at a nice restaurant and then we’re coming back here for me to give her the present I got for her.  I really hope she likes it.  It’s hard to find just the right gift for someone that’s becoming as special as she is if you catch what I mean.

She’s been the best thing I have found out here.  I have been so very blessed with meeting some great people, finding a great place to life and a really nice man to work for with a great company.  I’ve learned so very much since I have been here.  I have learned that life didn’t have to be the way I thought it was for most of my life.  Life is good so here’s what I got Breanna for her birthday.  It’s a Citizens watch I found online.  I have never seen one like this before and it made me think of her because it’s as unique as she is and just as special!

Well I got another call for a job

Breanna and I went to the bank and set up a business account with them.  That way, I can put all of my money that I make from side jobs in there in order to purchase materials or even tools that I need to make my side business grow.  She’s so smart about things like that.  I would have never thought of that.

I told her that we are going to be partners in this.  Well when I said that, she had a lawyer friend of her to write up a simple partnership agreement for us that makes it official.  The name of the business is now Hudson and Jenkins Home Improvement.  She’s the book keeper and schedules the jobs and I price the jobs, purchase materials that are needed and do the work.  She handles the money and when we get enough to buy a piece of equipment to help with other jobs, she will let me know.

This sounds like the beginning of something very special for both of us.  I wonder how far this partnership will end up going, if you know what I mean.  it’s a good way to see if we can work together, then maybe we can be together all the time.  I’m not saying that word yet because she might read this, if you catch my drift.

The job came out great!!!

Well I got there at 8 am and was totally finished by 5 pm.  Now all that’s left to do is go back tomorrow and grout the floor.  The people are totally satisfied so far.  I had enough of the under board to do the whole floor so all I had to buy for the job was the stuff to stick the tile down with and the grout.  I will make about $350 profit from the job. Not too shabby, huh?

My boss did let me use the tile cutter from work.  I told him what I was doing and he told me he was actually proud of me for my grit to try and make something for myself.  He’s totally behind me doing these side jobs as long as it doesn’t interfere with my work through the week.  He did tell me that if he catches me taking anything other than what is thrown away, that I was fired.  I won’t ever do that because I love my job and need it more than the side jobs.

I told him that I have no intentions of leaving his company because of all I’m learning and this is just something to make extra money and not a way to try and make it without my job.  He was glad to hear that.  I’m not an idiot, a steady pay check is almost guaranteed, side jobs aren’t.  They’re just icing on the cake when I can get them.

I got the side job!

The bathroom they wanted ceramic tile put into was small and they loved the tile I have so the materials are what I got out of the dumpster and won’t cost me a dime.  I quoted them a price and they want me to do it this coming weekend.  How awesome is that?  I wouldn’t have gotten this side job without Breanna putting up those flyer’s she made for me.

If I do a good job for these people then they just might get me even more work.  The business card Breanna ordered for e came in yesterday and they look very professional.  I’ll be sure to leave a few with the people when I complete the job if they’re happy with it that is.  I’ll make enough money on this job to buy my own tile cutter and even have some left over.  That way, the next job will gross me even more money since I won’t have to rent or borrow a tile cutter.  I’m going to ask my boss if I can borrow the one we use at work.  I don’t know if he’ll let me or not but it’s not that much to rent one if he won’t.  I’m on my way to having my own side business.

I got another raise

I was totally blown away when I got my check today.  I thought they made a mistake but my boss told me it was no mistake.  He said I have been working really hard and he wanted to reward my hard work and I got a 75 cent an hour raise.  It’s not much but it sure helped.  It nice to know that your hard work is appreciated.  He wanted to give me a bigger raise but work has slowed down he said.  Once we finish this big job, there’s not another one lines up yet.

The economy is getting tighter and tighter here just like everywhere else.  I have been stock piling the left over materials they throw away hoping to get side jobs on the weekend for extra money.  Breanna even made up some business cards for me on her computer.  I have no idea how to do that but she does. She even found a site online that will print the cards she made up really cheap.  They’re cheaper than her doing them herself.  I hope it works too.

She even made up some flyers to put up here and there.  I got a call from one person so far wanting tile put in their bathroom.  I’m going out this weekend to show them the tile I have and see if I have enough to do the job.  Wish me luck but as lucky as I have been lately, I’m afraid it’s all going to end.  I sure hope not.
