Watch Uncle Jay

You might like to watch Uncle Jay as he explains the news every Monday. This man sings and uses small words and talks loudly and slowly. He does everything to make the big news sound simple. It’s very funny if you like this kind of silly humor.

I found Uncle Jay on the Chicago Tribune web site. There are links on this site to videos from several weeks back.

Death of Newspapers

It seems that everyone has been taking the daily newspaper for granted. Most of the people in my neighborhood just open their door each morning and find a nice rolled newspaper at the end of their driveway. Its waiting for them to pull off the plastic sleeves that keep them dry and browse the local news while drinking their morning cup of coffee.

Some people who can’t keep up with reading a daily paper just stop by the local convenience store or vending rack when they want to read a newspaper. But for some reason it is getting really hard to find a newspaper in a rack. It’s like all the racks were sucked up into an alien spaceship overnight and carted away. I don’t know what’s up with that, but I don’t have time to read the paper every day and have always counted on being able to buy a paper every once in a while from the racks, especially the Sunday paper. I don’t know how hard I’m going to be willing to search the stores and sidewalks for a newspaper. I can get most of it online anyways.

What’s up with this swine flu?

It seems lately that you are hearing more and more about swine flu.  They are starting to call it a pandemic.  What the heck does that mean for us?  Is it something we really need to worry about or what?  I don’t know anyone that has it and as far as this area, I haven’t heard about anyone having it.

When the news uses words like ‘pandemic’, to people like me, that sounds like we should all run to our doctor and get a shot or soemthing to prevent getting it.  I’m not so sure they’re helping people not to panic about it, you know what I mean?  They should speak in simple English and not cause people to panic.  The panic can cause far more than the flu I bet!!  I may be wrong but that’s my opinion.

Wii game system

Man I love the Wii game system.  The games are more like you are really in the game instead of just sitting there with a control in your hand playing the game on TV.  Did you know that they are even putting the Wii game systems in Nursing Homes for the patients to be active and get exercise.  I think that is the greatest thing.  Well I read this and it surprised me, does it surprise you too?

Nintendo’s widely popular game system the Wii was hit by a decrease in sales in Japan. Nintendo hopes to regain its sales by releasing a new version of its Wii Sports game in June. The current CEO of Nintendo said in a press conference they will not be slashing prices of their hardware. “If our products are not much different from competitors’, price cuts would generate significant fresh demand. But video games are just not that kind of product.”

As of December 31, 2008 the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales. The Wii’s competitor the PlayStation 3 for the first time exceeded sales in 16 months in Japan for the month of March. The Wii Sports Resort and other new games and software will show up in Japanese stores in June to renew interest in the Wii.

In like a lion, out like a lamb

Coming from the south there are all kinds of ‘sayings’ like ‘If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.’  That seems to be the case this year for sure because the beginning of March was awful.  It was cold, nasty and even snowed.  Well it’s beautiful today so that old saying held true this year.  I never paid much attention in years past to see if it was true then or not.  That might be something I try to keep track of to see if that and other ‘old sayings’ have any truth to them.

Oh guess what, a couple of guys did get laid off last Friday.  Man I hated that for them too.  I just hope I’m not next but if I am, I’ll make it someway.  I always seem to land on my feet and sure hope that continues!!!  The unemployment rate across the country is at it’s highest since I was pretty young.  Breanna and I have been saving as much as we possibly can from the little side jobs I get here and there so that money might hold me over if I should get laid off.  Cross your fingers for me that I’m not next.

This is awful news

Here I am worried that I might lose my job and the good people of Alabama suffered a terrible fate.  Two tornadoes touched down in the town of Magee.  Thank God there was no loss of life but a lot of people lost absolutely everything.  With the economy like it is, what a crying shame that this has to happen now of all times.  Boy does my heart go out to all of the people affected by this terrible storm.

I guess I should be thankful that even if I do lose my job, I at least have side work that I can do.  These people don’t hardly even have a town left in which to work in.   There was one person that had to be airlifted to the University of Mississippi in Jacksonville and my thoughts and prayers are with them and their family.  I wish them a speedy recovery.

Pink elephant?

I have always heard of people that get highly intoxicated seeing ‘pink elephants’ and thought it was funny but there seems to be an honest to goodness pink elephant in Botswana Africa.  Imagine that!  Things like that really amaze me.  Nature is one of the wonders that I am very interested in especially when it’s something unusual like this pink elephant.  I just had to share this story with you.  I hope it amazes you even half as much as it amazed me.

A baby pink elephant was sighted in the African country of Botswana on Friday by a filmmaker for the BBC as he was filming for a wildlife documentary. The cameraman took photographs of the elephant when he noticed it in a herd of around eighty elephants in the Okavango Delta. According to experts, it is most likely an albino, an occurrence that is very rare among African elephants.

“We only saw it for a couple of minutes as the herd crossed the river”, said Mike Holding, who spotted the elephant. “This was a really exciting moment for everyone in camp. We knew it was a rare sighting – no-one could believe their eyes.”

“I have only come across three references to albino calves, which have occurred in Kruger National Park in South Africa,” said ecologist Mike Chase, who is in charge of the Elephants Without Borders conservation charity. “This is probably the first documented sighting of an albino elephant in northern Botswana. We have been studying elephants in the region for nearly 10 years now, and this is the first documented evidence of an albino calf that I have come across.”

The ecologist said that the condition might make it hard for the animal to survive for very long. “What happens to these young albino calves remains a mystery. Surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. The glaring sun may cause blindness and skin problems,” he noted.

However, he added that it still might be possible for the elephant to survive, as it appears to be adapting to the condition: “Because this elephant calf was sighted in the Okavango Delta, he may have a greater chance of survival. He can seek refuge under the large trees and cake himself in a thick mud, which will protect him from the sun,” Dr Chase noted.

“Already the two-to-three-month-old calf seems to be walking in the shade of its mother. This behavior suggests it is aware of its susceptibility to the harsh African sun, and adapted a unique behavior to improve its chances of survival.”

Work is slowing down

The economy is starting to affect the company I work for now.  Work is really slowing down.  There aren’t as many new home constructions or commercial construction going on either.  Housing prices are dropping every day it seems where people are trying to sell their houses instead of losing them to foreclosures.  I feel so sorry for those people that have worked so hard to have something to watch it all crumble away.

They have been talking about maybe having to start laying some people off at work.  I’m not the last guy hired but I’m not on top either.  I think there are just three other guys that were hired under me that do basically what I do so hopefully none of us will get laid off but if there is a lay off, I just hope and pray one of them is not me!

I can’t believe my luck!

I bought a Sunday paper and was sitting outside my room enjoying the weather when the owner of the motel walked up and asked how I liked it there.  I told him that I was trying to find a small apartment to rent because I needed something more than just a motel room.

Well he told me that his neighbor had a small apartment over their garage that had just come open two days ago. The guy that had rented the place had really trashed it and it needed some repairs before they could rent it again.  That started me thinking.  I asked where it was and if he thought it would be okay to go by and see the place.  He gave his neighbor a call and said to be there in 45 minutes.  It was only about 2 miles from where I work.

When I got there, they told me not to expect too much and took me up to see the apartment.  Yeah, that guy had trashed the place pretty bad and these were elderly people that had rented to him.  I made them an off they didn’t refuse.  I offered to do all the clean-up and repair what he had messed up for the deposit and at least the first months rent.  They agreed!!

Most of the stuff I would need to make the repairs I could get off of the job site from the dumpsters.  It was scraps mostly but they had already told me that if there was something I needed, it was okay to take it.  I HAD AN APARTMENT and guess what else, it was furnished.  Some of the furniture was messed up but nothing I couldn’t live with or fix.

It was a one bedroom, one bathroom and a living room, dining room, kitchen combination.  The power was included in the monthly rent and it was only $350 a month.  Man am I lucky or what?

I got paid today

I was really surprised when they handed me a check today.  The pay period runs from Wednesday to Wednesday with overtime available for those who want or need it.  I’m working all they will let me.  I have to get out of that cheap motel and into an apartment of my own.  At least I have a roof over my head and what I made will cover the room for next week.

I’ll probably pick up a Sunday paper and check out apartments around here.  All I want is a small place.  It doesn’t have to be furnished.  I can sleep on the floor until I can find a bed or at least a mattress to throw on the floor.  I sure hope they have yard sales and flea markets here like they did back home.  I don’t mind second hand until I can afford better and I will have better some day soon.

Well I gotta find a place to wash my clothes and pay for my room so I have clean clothes and a roof over my head for next week.  Check ya later.
