Paying A Debt

Since the kids will be out of school in a couple of weeks, it’s time to pay off a debt. I had told my children that if they got good grades I would take them on a vacation to wherever they wanted to go. As you can imagine, the kids did their part and now its time to do mine. The only decision left was where to take them. It wasn’t long before I knew the answer when I saw their computer on a page about resorts in Myrtle Beach.

I have taken the kids there before and we had a great time. They both love the water and playing in the sandy beach. I also know that many of their friends have plans to visit the beach as well. It seems to be a popular destination for all the kids at their school. It’s also a great destination for adults as well. I was checking out their golf packages and was very impressed with the values I found there.

My wife is all for the idea as she enjoys the beaches as well. She likes to read her books while lying in the sun and working on her tan. She also likes to window shop along the many stores that are in the area. I found out she was looking online for more information about the area. I am sure that we will all have a good time on our vacation this year.

Online Schools

One thing that is very important for young people to do is to ensure that they receive the best education they can get. Having a degree will help them advance their careers and rise in the company they work for. Whenever I hire someone, the first thing I look for is that they have the proper degrees to show they have completed their training. A good education could mean the difference in the quality of their lives.

Whenever you start your education, it’s good to find out all you can about what is going on. I found a good source of information in a paper that is called The Chronicle. It contains general education news as well as facts about the careers you may be entering. I like the fact that there are people who can help you keep up with the latest news.

One school that I particularly like is called Walden University. This school is on the leading edge of education. You can earn the higher degrees that are needed to succeed. Another bonus about the school is that you can do it online. This makes it convenient for those with busy schedules. I know that many people must hold a job while going to school and this is a great way to do it.

This January is Bringing a Lot of Snow

I usually don’t mind winter – especially just the colder temperatures. I don’t even mind snow very much, if I do not have to drive it it and be someplace important by a particular time. Otherwise, driving on snow is stressful because the people around here freak out and cause a lot of wrecks, tying up traffic. And they tend to close school at the mere mention of snow – before the first flake even touches the ground!

The biggest danger in this area from winter weather is an ice storm. Snow does not do anywhere near as much damage to trees and property as ice does. The ice is heavy and takes down entire trees and electric poles, as well as making roads treacherous to drive.

This January we have already had some snow and ice, and the Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting a lot of very cold weather this winter. I think January was bring us a lot of snow this year. I predict the kids will be missing a lot of school because of the weather this winter.

Stuck Behind a School Bus – Ugh!

Now that school is back in session, my drive to work has gotten longer by at least 15 minutes in the mornings. So you would think that I should leave 15 minutes earlier and I will still get to work on time, right? Wrong! If I leave 15 minutes earlier, I end getting stuck behind a school bus. It is stop and go for a very very long time and that 15 minutes gets eaten up by the bus stopping at every corner to pick up kids. And you cannot pass the bus. There is no safe spot on my commute to pass a school bus. By the way, forget about the bus pulling over once in a while to let everyone pass – the bus driver does not give a hoot about the long line of cars behind him that can’t get by.

So now, for me to get to work on time, I have to leave my house 30 minutes earlier than I did over the summer when there were no school buses dragging down traffic. And then I end up arriving at work 15 minutes early. I sure could use that 15 minutes to sleep on some mornings. But no. I am at work early and there is no advantage to getting there early. It’s not like I can leave 15 minutes earlier or even take an extra 15 minutes longer at lunch. It is 15 minutes wasted or gifted to my boss. I’m screwed either way.

Playing safely

The building my office is in is very large. We have a lot of people going in and out all the time. We sometimes have as many as two or three hundred people working there. With all these moms and dads coming and going, we sometimes have quite a few children there as well. It seems that every time summer comes around we have kids coming out of our ears. We decided that we needed to add some facilities to care for them while their parents are working.

We found a room where the kids could be supervised and entertained. We also decided to build something like those school playgrounds that you see all around. We had a nice little piece of ground that would be suitable for the task. It was a fun project to work on and I think the results were better than expected. We worked with a company called Rubberecycle that helped us with playground surfacing. They have many products to choose from and know their business well.

They have a special product made just for playground surfaces. It’s really just chopped up used tires but its makes for a nice safe base for the kids to play on. The parents like the fact that it’s safe and that it can made in many colors. Another aspect of the product is that it helps to recycle some of the millions of tires that are disposed of every year. The playground has been a hit with the kids as well as the parents and everyone seems to be happy. That’s the good thing about my job.
