Great Advice!

One great way to improve your life is to talk to other people. It can be surprising to find other perspectives about how we live and the things that are important. I realized this recently after a conversation with a neighbor down the street. Sometimes the simplest things make all the difference. Nancy told me about her window plant boxes and how they improved her life. I thought about it and decided she was right.

Keeping it Safe!

The United States announced that several thousand U.S. troops will stay in the recently conquered town of Marjah. The town was the focus of a recent offensive that cleared the town of Taliban forces. The U.S. troops will be accompanied by more than one thousand Afghan troops who hope to keep the Taliban forces from returning.

The offensive and its aftermath is part of the “clear, hold, and build” program that is being implemented in an effort to bring about Afghan government control to the town. The Taliban is still fighting back and are setting roadside bombs in an effort to slow supply lines to the town. I hope this strategy will pay off for the thousands of Afghans who want a proper government.

Icebergs

I’ve heard that icebergs float around in the ocean, but I never knew they could do a lot of harm. Of course there’s the Titanic that was sunk, but that seems not to be the norm. A new iceberg was formed the other day when a giant berg crashed into Antarctica. A berg that is 60 miles across crashed into the Mertz Glacier and caused another berg to break off. The new berg is about 48 by 24 miles long.

Some experts are worried that this could have unintended consequences. The effect of the ice displacement could affect ocean currents that cause cool water to sink and enrich with oxygen. Other experts say this is a normal event and won’t affect the climate. I guess only time will tell what will happen.

The Right Gift

One of the hardest things to do is to find the perfect gift. Whenever it’s my wife’s birthday, I usually struggle to find just the right thing. Luckily, this year will be different. I found a site called shopwiki.com that has many items I know she would be interested in. Since my wife loves clothes and keeps up with the latest Womens Fashion Trends, I thought I would try to find something along those lines.

The big problem for me is that I don’t really keep up with the times. I have no idea who are the leaders as far as Womens Clothing Designers. I did do some research on the subject and now have at least a basic idea of what I’m looking for. I am really hoping to get her something special this year and so I am going all out.

Another factor I am taking into consideration is the environment. I know my wife would approve and so I am looking for something in the Eco Fashion line. I feel good knowing that my shopping habits will contribute to the well being of our earth. I am sure my wife will feel that way too. In the end, I think I have found the perfect gift. I just hope my wife will agree with my assessment.

Dodging a bullet

Thousands of people all along the Pacific Rim were warned that a tsunami may hit their areas. The tsunami was set off by the earthquake in Chile. The warnings set off a panic of people who engaged in buying basic supplies and leaving the beaches for higher ground. All these people were lucky that the expected wave never materialized and the alert was cancelled.

Despite the fact that the waves never really got big, many people defended giving out the warnings. The tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004 is still on everyone’s mind and its better to be safe than sorry. I’m glad that we live in a modern age that can predict disasters and work to prevent them.

SeaWorld

Yesterday’s tragic death of a trainer at SeaWorld has led to some very different views. The death of trainer Dawn Brancheau at the hands of a killer whale was tragic indeed. She was mauled by the whale and forced under water where she drowned to death by an animal she loved. Feeling on both sides of the issue are strong.

Some believe that the animal should be destroyed. This is not the first incident with this particular whale and some wonder if this animal is a “Bad Egg”. Others believe that the whale should be released back into the wild and released from confinement. Whatever feelings you may have on the issue would be interesting to hear. I hope you will express your feelings with me!

Integrity

The economy is still recovering and many people are unsure how to invest the money they have. Being as that I am one of those people, I have been looking for ways to diversify my own portfolio. I heard about a way to protect my money when the market goes bad and that is to buy gold coins. I know that gold can bring a good return on my money when times are tough.

Long Haul

I have heard of people doing amazing things in order to keep a job they like, but this one takes the cake. Michael Hanley lives in Wisconsin, but he works in Kansas. His General Motors job was moved and he felt it was necessary to go the extra mile to keep the job he had. He now drives 530 miles every weekend in order to visit his home and children.

It’s another 530 miles back to work and the trip can be heart wrenching. Leaving his wife and kids behind has got to be hard for anyone. Keeping his health insurance was a major factor in his decision to keep the job he had. It’s a shame that one man has to go so far to keep his family fed.

Superman

It is sometimes very interesting how much people will pay for rare items. One example of this came this week when an unidentified man paid a record one million dollars for a No 1 Action Comic book featuring Superman on the cover. The magazine is from 1938 and cost 10 cents when it was new.

The seller of the magazine has also remained anonymous. The sale took place on an auction site called ComicConnect.com. The book was worth so much because its condition was rated an 8. That means “Very Fine”. The previous record for a comic book sale was $317,000.

I’m Good!

Every once in awhile, I’m really good; what I mean is that sometimes I can solve a problem for somebody else when they really need it. I was able to help my nephew who was struggling at school. He was coming home needing Math answers for his math class and there was no one who could help him. It was lucky that I found out about the problem as I knew the perfect solution.

It can be difficult to get into a good college these days. You have to have the required amount of good grades to get accepted. If your grades are slipping in just one area, you may be denied a spot at your favorite college. That’s why it was important that my nephew receive Precalculus help in order to make the grade. I knew of a great website that could offer a solution.

The site is called tutorvista.com and they offer help in many subjects. One of the subjects they specialize in happens to be Calculus help. It can all be done online at your convenience. I also like that it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to pay for it. My nephew has been working with the tutors on the site and has raised his knowledge of math to a much higher level. It’s good when a plan comes together and another problem is solved!
