The learning curve

Since I am fortunate enough to work in an office, I get to learn many things that I would not normally know about. I had the chance recently to learn more about what a dedicated server was and how it affected our business. We rely heavily on the internet and need to keep our website going at all cost. We bring in a lot of business that way and it is important to our bottom line.

It turns out that a server is what keeps your website running. It performs many basic functions that are important. Whenever you do any kind of work, it’s always good to have the best tools. This is very important in my field of work as there is little room for error. Since I will soon be able to order some new equipment, I was looking at the Custom Computers that are available. Hacker Convention

This week in Dallas is sure to be interesting. There will be a convention of people who all want to work on the problem of international hacking. There will be representatives from many countries including China, India, Japan, and the European Union. Called the Worldwide Cybersecurity Summit, the convention is sponsored by the EastWest Institute think tank.

The organizers hope to address issues that all countries face. Computer hacking can be used as a weapon in warfare and cause great disruptions. Finding ways to deal with this issue will be tough, but may be worth it all in the end.

End of an Era

It’s finally time to say goodbye! Sony announced their decision to stop producing 3.5-inch floppy disks. The disks were a very popular way of storing information for many years. Unfortunately, newer technologies have taken over and the floppy is no longer needed. It will be missed by millions of sentimental people.

There is still hope for those who may have a box or two of floppies in their closet. I do have a floppy drive reader on my computer and would be glad to help anyone who needs to transfer their valuable information to another format. I guess it’s just the way of things that stuff goes out of date. I think I’ll put my floppies in the box I store my 8 track tapes in.

Success

There are a few times when people need to ask for help. The ability to know when you are in over your head is an important asset. Those who ask questions and look for answers usually are satisfied that they did. This is a lesson that I have tried to teach to my children and I am glad that they have taken it to heart. When my daughter told me she needed help, I knew she would find it.

The help she needed was in the field of mathematics. What she specifically wanted was Statistics help. She is in her first year of college and she wasn’t prepared for the math involved. This subject can be very intimidating to those who are unprepared for it. She would come home and try to solve the Statistics problems that were assigned to her. No matter how she tried, she just couldn’t do it.

Ships and Oil

Modern day technology is giving us a better understanding of our world. Another example of this arrived today with the news that 12 shipwrecks were discovered during a probe of a gas pipeline route. The ships were discovered by the Russian led Nord Stream consortium that is planning to lay a pipe from Russia to Europe.

The ships are believed to be from the 17th and 18th centuries. Due to the low oxygen levels, very little decay has happened to the wrecks. Many of the wrecks are still in excellent condition and will remain so for the foreseeable future. While there are no plans as of yet to raise the wrecks, they will be an object of study that could shed light on the history of early navigation.

The Boy King

For 3,300 years, the boy king laid in his tomb surrounded by numerous jewels and artifacts. A golden funeral mask adorned his head and he laid in peace. In 1922 his tomb was discovered and he is now famous. King Tutankhamen (King tut) is known throughout the world. The mysteries that surround him are slowly being unraveled.

The cause of his death has long been speculated upon. Some say he was murdered, some maintained that he died of natural causes. The truth has now been revealed. A team of scientists have used DNA testing and CT scans to reveal the true cause of his death. The boy king seems to have died from a broken leg that was exacerbated by malaria. I hope he will soon be laid back to rest!
