Oxygen Levels

Climate change has been a growing concern over the last decade and the results from it are starting to show. Lower oxygen levels in the world’s ocean are the latest victims. Scientists are reporting that naturally low oxygen levels in some areas of the deep ocean are unusually bigger than normal and are lasting longer.

The warming of the ocean’s temperature is creating a warm water cap near the surface. This prevents low oxygen water from below to rise and replenish. This in turn causes some sea animals to die and decay causing even further oxygen depletion. While scientists cannot confirm this result is from global warming, it does seem to be the trend.

Ships and Oil

Modern day technology is giving us a better understanding of our world. Another example of this arrived today with the news that 12 shipwrecks were discovered during a probe of a gas pipeline route. The ships were discovered by the Russian led Nord Stream consortium that is planning to lay a pipe from Russia to Europe.

The ships are believed to be from the 17th and 18th centuries. Due to the low oxygen levels, very little decay has happened to the wrecks. Many of the wrecks are still in excellent condition and will remain so for the foreseeable future. While there are no plans as of yet to raise the wrecks, they will be an object of study that could shed light on the history of early navigation.

Great Advice!

One great way to improve your life is to talk to other people. It can be surprising to find other perspectives about how we live and the things that are important. I realized this recently after a conversation with a neighbor down the street. Sometimes the simplest things make all the difference. Nancy told me about her window plant boxes and how they improved her life. I thought about it and decided she was right.

Our mental health is very important. Having hobbies that we like can be very soothing and give us pleasure. Many people find peace in planting plants and watching them grow. One excellent way to achieve this is by taking advantage of window flower boxes that can be easily installed in your home. These boxes can also add value to your home.

I found a pretty neat site online called windowboxplanters.com that has something for everyone. The quality of their products is high and the prices are low. You can find garden window boxes that will help you get started with your hobby of gardening. I was glad to finally realize that Nancy was right. I have taken her advice and started my own seedlings. It’s always good to learn something new and this piece of advice may last throughout my life.

Icebergs

I’ve heard that icebergs float around in the ocean, but I never knew they could do a lot of harm. Of course there’s the Titanic that was sunk, but that seems not to be the norm. A new iceberg was formed the other day when a giant berg crashed into Antarctica. A berg that is 60 miles across crashed into the Mertz Glacier and caused another berg to break off. The new berg is about 48 by 24 miles long.

Some experts are worried that this could have unintended consequences. The effect of the ice displacement could affect ocean currents that cause cool water to sink and enrich with oxygen. Other experts say this is a normal event and won’t affect the climate. I guess only time will tell what will happen.

Dodging a bullet

Thousands of people all along the Pacific Rim were warned that a tsunami may hit their areas. The tsunami was set off by the earthquake in Chile. The warnings set off a panic of people who engaged in buying basic supplies and leaving the beaches for higher ground. All these people were lucky that the expected wave never materialized and the alert was cancelled.

Despite the fact that the waves never really got big, many people defended giving out the warnings. The tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004 is still on everyone’s mind and its better to be safe than sorry. I’m glad that we live in a modern age that can predict disasters and work to prevent them.

Energy and Money

One thing that I like about the current administration is their concern for the environment. I am all for the fact that they will soon be offering a tax rebate for people who make their homes more energy efficient. There are a number of ways to do so and they are not that difficult. Even though they are small things, they can add up to significant energy savings.

When you go through your house, make sure that your windows and doors are weather-stripped. You can also use caulk to seal up any areas that need it. Another easy way to save money is to replace your light bulbs with CFLs. I certainly hope that every homeowner will take some time to ensure that their house is energy efficient.

Recycle old cell phones!

Since the Christmas season is almost over, there are a lot of people with new electronic items. One thing we can all do to give Mother Earth a present is to make sure those old electronic items are reused or recycled. I have put together a few tips to help you along.

1. If your cell phone still works, you may donate it to a good charity.
2. Before you send your item to be recycled, be sure you wipe away any data that could be detrimental if the wrong person gets a hold of it.
3. Many manufacturers will take back their old electronics, check with them first.
4. Be sure to buy “Green” products. These products are made with Mother Earth in mind from the start.

I help these tips will help you and the rest of us as well!!

Carp invasion

It seems that the people who live around and depend on the great lakes for their living have found a new enemy. The Asian carp is coming to town and they don’t like it at all. Imported to America to help keep fish ponds in the south clean, they have been migrating north ever since. They are now threatening to take over the great lakes and ruin the tourist and fishing trades.

Many steps are being taken to stop the fish cold. Electric fences, lock closings, and even poison have been tried. So far, the efforts have been successful, but it would only take a few to get started with the takeover. I hope that these efforts will be successful and want to remind everyone about the dangers they impose when they import foreign species.

The more things change…

Once again, Mother Nature has proven that she is mighty. This time the players involved are birds that migrate south for the winter and modern day planes. Studies have shown that by mimicking the flight of birds, the airlines could save thousands of gallons of fuel by flying in the formation of a V such as birds do when flying long distances. The simple laws of physics show that reduced air drag could make the flights to far-off places easier.

I am certainly impressed by Mother Nature and her infinite knowledge. It always seems that her time- tested ways are best. I would be glad to know I was flying in formation and doing my part to save energy and the environment. I hope the airlines will take this cue!

A more secure future

There are many things in life that can be scary. One thing that really concerns me is the safety of my family. Every time I leave the house I wonder if my family will be ok. There are many bad people in the world and even when you think you are safe, you may not be. That’s why I decided to look into some Home Security Systems as a way to keep my family safe.

I started to look around online to see what I could find. After reading a whole bunch of customer’s reviews, it became clear to me that there was only one choice. I thought that going with the leader in Home Security would be the best bet. I had heard about the company called ADT and thought I would give them a call. I was glad I did because now I feel so much better when I leave the house.

One of the best features of their service is the Home Security Monitoring. This feature is available in nearly every state. This also means that the authorities can be alerted whenever any trouble arises. The system I had installed is also very easy to use. This was important as I wanted my kids to be able to operate it. They have no trouble with it and they use all the time. I am glad I decided to make the move to a more secure future!
