News Around the World

If you speak only English, how do you expect to function in a world that is becoming increasingly small? Not in physical size, but in terms of communications and awareness of the quality of life experienced by all our brothers and sisters who share this planet with us.

Now that I have time to cruise around the internet and discover new web sites I have been discovering more and more wonderful sites created or maintained by people in other countries. This is not an issue when the other country uses English, although there are many different uses for words in England and Australia that we recognize.

For sites in countries where English is not the common language, I have discovered how helpful an online translation service can be.

Want to read up on current events from a French perspective? You will be surprised at how the French view situations very differently from an American perspective. You can read a French newspaper or other online media using service de traduction.

Want to learn more about what is going on in Germany? Use Übersetzungsdienst to read a daily German newspaper. Not the big ones in the major cities like Berlin. Find a small one in the little communities scattered around the region.

This is how you get a slice of life from people around the world. It is eye opening and humbling to learn that others live such a different life from what we know here in America and take for granted every day.

Setting Up a New Site

Looking for web hosting is really easy when you have already set up one. Like this blog that I set up a couple of years ago. I was determined to find a way to do this and I asked my tech friends, read articles on the internet, and did a lot of research before I decided to go with the hosting company for my blog. Then I decided to set up a web site for my hobby, and I taught myself everything about that, too. Not that is was a breeze, but the way I learn is to get my hands dirty, if you know what I mean.

I still read up on all the hosting information I can find – after technology changes and advances all the time. Today I read Web Hosting 101 and learned about cloud computing and cloud hosting. I think that is the most cutting edge technology in today’s market. When I read the Web Hosting News blog, most of the recent articles were about cloud hosting, such as HPs new cloud hosting contract for NASA . Isn’t it amazing that the technology used for the highest levels of Government and private industry are also available to the regular Joes like you and me?

Music Online

Years ago there was a special feature on Yahoo Messenger that let you listen to free music online. You could choose from a couple dozen different types of music channels and it played on your computer in the background while you did other things online. But then they stopped it. I don’t remember why, but I miss that.

A friend of mine recently told me about an online music web site called, Pandora. This is a very cool site and is now one of my favorites. You sign up for a free account, which gives you up to 40 hours of free music every month. You only have to endure a few commercials – it’s not that bad, plus that is what makes the music free. But if the commercials really bug you, you can pay for an upgrade of only $36 for a whole year, and that is a real bargain.

Pandora lets you select your favorite music and create different channels with just the song types or artist types that you like. You get thumbnail of the album playing and links to information on each song, including a biography of the performer, the song lyrics, and where to buy the song download or the whole album. I really like this website!

A Farmer’s Life for Me

I’m a farmer and love being able to provide my community with healthy, locally grown produce. I specialize in different varieties of heirloom tomatoes, but I also grow okra, corn, and various types of potatoes as well. I’m considering getting a couple of milk cows soon, but for now I’m happy just growing my veggies.

I needed a good home internet connection to stay up on the local weather and also to stay in touch with my buyers and the farmer’s market in town. I did some research on www.WirelessInternet.net and found a good mobile connection for us, so I’ve been surfing and emailing for the last few months, making my life much simpler. It’s certainly easier than carting around huge boxes of vegetables to see who wants to buy!

I’ve avoided two spontaneous ice storms this year already by looking up the weather online rather than relying on my farmer’s almanac, so the service has already earned its weight. I’m so happy being a farmer and I think my customers are glad I do it, too!

Printing for Less

Right before Christmas my multi-function printer quit working. It just locked up and quit on me. So at the worst time of year for my wallet, I had to go buy a new printer for my home computer. It did not make sense to pay over $100 for a printer repair when you can buy new printers for about the same money. So I looked at what was on sale and bought a cheap printer that also scans and copies.

I don’t think I print very much stuff, mostly maps and letters, so I was surprised that my ink has run out already. It’s only been four months and now I’m looking for cheap ink cartridges so I can print again.

Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but I can’t believe how hard it is to find cheap printer ink locally. In fact, I have given up looking locally and I’ll just buy it online. Every local store s at least 10 miles from my house, so think of the tie and gas wasted on going from store to store. I can do it online, from my comfortable chair, in the middlef the night if I want to.

The web site that I found, Inkgrabber.coom, has cheap ink for printers and with a coupon for free shipping I figured it out and it is by far the cheapest way to go.I don’t have to pay the local prices, I don’t have to spend my time and gas money driving across town to the office supply store, and the ink I need will be at my doorstep in a couple o days. That’s the way to go from now on.

A friend of mine posted this on his Facebook wall. I wasn’t sure it would work on my blog. I’m glad it showed up – this is not a video – it is a live stream. When the sun goes down it goes dark – but look at it during the daylight and it is amazing.

Support your neighbors

With the economy the way it is, I feel it’s important to spread around the little bit of wealth I have. When I do, I like to support the businesses that are close to me. I feel that keeping people in my area busy is good for me as well. One way I do this is to use a site called local.com. It is a search engine on the internet that helps me find businesses that are close to home. I then take advantage of their services if I can.

I think the one feature that I use the most is to find local restaurants. We like to eat out from time to time and are always looking for new places to go. If I want Mexican food, I just look through the listings until I see a likely place to go. It’s easy to do and fun. They also have a local yellowpages service that comes in handy. That way I don’t have to spend time trying to figure out where my wife hid the telephone book!

I recommend this site to all those who want to support their neighbors. The local search option is quick and convenient. Another good thing is that you can add your own input about a business or service in your area. That makes the site a little more personal.

Spreading the Fun

One thing that everybody in my family really enjoys is going to an outing. We all love to get away from home for a few hours and go see a sporting event. Sometimes we watch a football or hockey game, but it depends on what time of the year it is. Since its basketball season, we have been going to many of the games. I recently got some Boston Celtics Tickets that we used to see the game. I was glad I got the tickets pretty cheap.

We do a lot of traveling and it’s good to be able to get tickets to major events on short notice. I found a site called acheapseat.com that is good for getting tickets on. I have purchased Chicago Bulls Tickets as well as Dallas Mavericks Tickets there. It is easy to do and I know I can count on the site to provide first class service.

Another thing I found out was that tickets make a great gift. I sent my cousin in Texas some Houston Rockets Tickets for her birthday and she just loved the gift. I sent my brother in law in California some Los Angeles Lakers Tickets and he took his family to see the game. He loved the gift I sent. I have always loved sports and it is a pleasure to spread the fun around.

Get on with Life

One thing that will certainly get you ahead these days is a good education. I see it all the time as I have hired a number of people for my company. I get hundreds of applications and it can be difficult to sort through them all. That’s why I eliminate a number of them right off the bat if they are not properly certified. I know there are many talented people out there, but they need to have the proper background on paper to get a job with me.

It can be hard to go to college. Going back and forth to it can be a hassle. That’s why I believe that the easiest way to earn a degree these days is online. You only have to find the top online schools to start the process. You can do your work from home at your own time and speed. It’s easy to do and will help you get ahead in life.

Education is a way to say to your employer that you can finish something that you started. That’s very important to me. There are sites where you can go to find the best online colleges and earn your online degree. It’s ever more important these days as the job market is tight. I think everyone should look toward finishing their education and get on with life!
