He’s Large!

There’s a scene in the movie, Popeye, where Olive Oil is hanging out with her girlfriends and she starts to sing a song about her fiancé, Bluto. She tries to sing of his virtues, but the song ends up, “He’s large,” and the girls sing along like backup singers, “Large.” That was the polite way, back in the 1980’s, to describe guys like me. I’m large and I’m not all that worried about losing weight. I’m not fat. There is a difference between large and fat.

My problem with being large is finding clothes that fit. For some reason a lot of U. S. manufacturers have decided that men who are wide must also be short. If I can find clothes that fit me around the waist, the legs are too short. If I find a shirt that is large enough for my barrel chest, then the sleeves are too short. That is why I shop for Large Men’s Clothing online. I know the measurements that I need and I can usually get enough details from the web site to know if the clothes will fit me.

Enjoy the video, thanks to YouTube! I’ve always been a Popeye fan and was thrilled when this movie came out. I think it’s time to dig that movie out and watch it again, probably been ten years since I’ve seen in last!

Luxury Vacation Rentals, Paris or Greece?

Since it has been so nasty outside with freezing rain, snow, sleet, along with some pretty hefty winds these past couple of days, I do what I only have to do and get myself back inside as quick as possible. The older I get the less I enjoy (yes I used to enjoy) winter and all the ugly weather that it brings along with it, like it or not. Although we have had some pretty mild winters these past couple of years it is still winter and it’s still cold and wet. Not my favorite mixture.

I’ve been going through some boxes that have been in the “Guest Room” for many years now that mainly have papers in them that have needed to be gone through, most of which ends up in the paper/cardboard recycling bin. It’s a slow process and sometimes a painful one that causes me to feel depressed for days. Even though my folks have been gone for over four years now it is still painful and raw. I will never get over it, but am doing the best that I can with the cards that I have been dealt in this life. Living here at their house and running the family farm on my own has been a challenge and will continue to because that is real life.

What I really need right now is when I get my tax refund check is to book one of the luxury paris vacation rentals that I’ve been eyeballing online for years now. I made the mistake of sharing my wants and needs for a luxury vacation some where like Paris or Greece and now she seems to be on a mission to get me away from here and plan the “perfect get-a-way” for me before I lose my mind and health. I don’t want to go alone, but there really aren’t a lot of people that I could spend that amount of time with and enjoy before wanting to strangle them. I’ve been on my own for so long here that I don’t know how I would handle sharing myself 24/7. And trying to find someone that can get away for a week because of their job, or their kids, or their aging parents, or their health or their finances, blah, blah, blah………

Free Website Templates, Free Is Good

My blog has been on my mind lately and I’ve been considering and seriously thinking about getting a new look for my blog. There are so many gorgeous free web templates out there now. Either my blog needs a new look or I need a new haircut. But something needs to have a fresh look . . . guess I’m in the winter doldrums today.

Actually, if I had the time and the right software I would love to design some free templates on my own. I have some ideas for themes that aren’t represented now – at least in the sites I’ve been browsing through as of late. But there are so many free website templates out there right now that it just boggles my brain.

To make a premium template it takes a lot of time and effort from people that know about programming, music, animators as well as usability experts, just to name a few that come to mind. So it is a team effort, whether you have an expert from each important and very necessary field or one person that “knows it all”  and can get the job done on their own. I do know some folks that can and do it all, no way I would even attempt most of the stuff. Even though I’ve been blogging for numerous years now, I still consider myself to be a newbie.

Most of what I learned I taught myself and thank goodness for my sister who quite frequently drove all the way up here for a few hand’s on sessions. That made so many things so much easier to do and it helped a lot of what I learned to make sense.  There is just so much to learn and things are always changing. I feel a headache coming on/out and my stomach is being “sensative” just thinking of those times. Not the best

Yet Another Browser To Learn and Use

Another browser? Good grief! I was originally a Netscape fan, back in the days when you had to buy one on disk. They got muscled out and I reluctantly converted to Internet Explorer, which worked well for a while and then I had an issue, can’t remember what that particular issue was because that was a couple of years ago and numerous computer issues. I was told that I really needed to stop using good old Internet Explorer, that was when my  IT buddies turned me onto Firefox, and that’s where I plan to stay. Unless I buy a Mac, then I’ll have to use the Safari browser.

Now Google has come up with another way to get us to come over to the “dark side” and get into the market and they have launched their own browser called, “Chrome.” The early testers are posting rave reviews, so maybe they’ve got something there. Plus I know several people that have turned to Google and tried out their “Chrome” and it is all good positive stuff that I’m hearing about it. But for a little longer I plan on using Firefox and letting the new Chrome work out more of the bugs before I install it and give it a try.

I’ll have to be in the right kind of mood to switch over as well. I’m not looking forward to yet another browser and learning all the ins and outs of the darned thing. So I’m in no hurry what-so-ever to switch out, but it is inevitable.

Interning For The Summer

My oldest nephew is heading overseas in seven weeks or so, for his summer intern job in Amsterdam. My sister has been working closely with him over the phone and by instant messengers to help him find cheap accommodation Amsterdam by using a web site called www.shortstay-apartment.com and searching their database for an apartment or even a room in Amsterdam for the month of June. They are on a shoestring budget and would much rather spend the money on activities to take advantage of being in Europe for a month rather than spending it all on some place to sleep.

Last year the same nephew spent the entire summer as an intern for a big law firm in Philadelphia. He agreed to take the position without knowing much about the actual job function. He just trusted his college liaison to place him in a company that would further his interest in helping the environment. Philadelphia is a great city for young people. It has a lot of history, culture, and professional sports to keep people active and stimulated. The cost of living is high because of its location on the East Coast and so near to New York City. But for a lot of people, Philadelphia is a lower cost alternative to living in NYC or the north Jersey area. This year he is traveling to Amsterdam and working with an engineering company. He is looking forward to learning about the European approach to generating, using and saving energy.

Role Playing Games

My brother has discovered an awesome role playing game on the Internet called World of Warcraft, which I’ve heard about, but know nothing about. He was telling me about the game and wants me to join in the fun and play along with him. From what I understand, you download the software and sign up for the game online and then you buy a wow game card so that you have unlimited access to the game web site for a month.

The game card is like a subscription. There is a place online where you can buy a world of warcraft game card, and they have special deals where you can get a 60 day subscription. Instead of having to drive to the local game store, park your car, go inside the store to get waited on, pay for the game card, then drive home with it, you can just go online and get your wow game card code right away. They send it to you in an email and you have it in minutes instead of all the time you would waste buying it from a local store. That all makes sense to me, as I really would prefer buying things on the internet. I’m just not sure if I will have enough free time to spend playing this role playing game and that I’d be just throwing my money away. I’ll have to go over to his place and watch him play it and see if it is even something that I would want to do.

Box Office Failure

One of my favorite action movies by someone other than Mel Gibson has got to be the original “Speed.” The movie had a great cast: Keanu Reeves – gorgeous, intense, the clean cut, cop-type everyone loves to love Dennis Hopper – one of the best bad guys EVER – Sandra Bullock – America’s darling – Jeff Daniels – Imaginative casting – from slapstick to a cop – and it worked! Can you believe it has been 19 years since that movie came out? IT was released in 1994. Now that certainly makes me feel so OLD!

One of the worst sequels of all time, Speed 2 was made with a lot of the same people, with the noticeable absence of Keanu Reeves, and released in 1997. It was a box office failure – and rightfully so. The movie was a money grab and had so many technical inconsistencies that it was neither believable nor entertaining. The set for the huge crash ending was supposed to be the Caribbean town of St. Martin, but according to Wikipedia, there is no town by the name in the movie and there is not town that looks anything like the scene in the movie. So I stand by my original comment that the Isla Moin Marina in Costa Rica was used as the basis of the movie set in Speed 2. Unless this town did not exist in 1996, in which case I wonder if the architect was inspired by the movie?

The New Video Chat Lights

My sister has been talking up the video chats to me, that so many people are using and enjoying, saying that I should start looking into getting on to a few video chat rooms, just to be able to socialize a bit. I have been blowing her off with every excuse that I can think of, most of them were true though. I am super busy around here taking care of everything that needs to be done all on my own. At the end of the day I’m pretty beat and not in the mood to go anywhere except to the kitchen, the living room and then to bed.

Since I do spend so much alone time, it certainly does get lonely. The holidays are always the worst so I think I just might check into some of the sites that my big sis has been telling me about. But first I want to look into the video chat lights that are out that helps make your video image look more pleasing. I need all the help that I can get. I’m just a farmer, not at all fancy like and haven’t worn anything but jeans in well over 6 years! Just stating a fact.

Running Up That Hill, Without the TV Set

With everything that needs to be done around the farm and the house by me, myself and I, I don’t usually have a whole heck of a lot of down time, but when I do I really like to kick back with a cold beer and watch an hour or two of some good action or comedy shows and/or movies. You would think that with all the channels that I get with my current Direct TV package that there would be several things on tonight, but that just wasn’t the case.

I started to watch a movie on one of the Showtime channels called Bellflower but after staring at the screen for over 10 minutes and still not catching on to the plot or being entertained at all I couldn’t deal with this movie another minute. The good news is that at the beginning of the movie they played a song that I swear I haven’t heard or even thought about in well over 15 years “Running Up That Hill” but I they only played about 45 seconds of it, just enough to tease me into turning off the TV and turning on my computer to try and find this song on YouTube. I had no idea that there were several versions of it, but it didn’t take too long to find the one that I was used to hearing, the one by Kate Bush.

For some reason this song just moves me, not in a bad or depressing way, mind you. I really can’t explain the feeling, but it is a good one and those feelings are hard to come by lately so I’m going to take it and run up that hill!

Webhosting Options For Blogging

My 12 year old niece is pestering me to help her get her own blog up and running. She is always checking this blog when she has time on her laptop and really likes the idea of having a blog, so I’ve been spending a little bit of time here and there with her on this issue.  We have both been reading up on the web hosting sites that are available out there for folks like us. We don’t need anything fancy or frilly, but when it comes to webhosting it pays to do your homework a bit before diving in.

One article that we both read was regarding the Top Five Affordable Registrars, I was glad to see that Go Daddy and Yahoo were on their list as those are the two that I tend to lean towards to. Both are affordable, well known, well established and dependable, which are all good points to go on. I really had no idea that there were so many out there these days, things have gotten a bit more complicated than I remember, but we are still researching and will come to a decision by the end of next week. Then I’ll be busy teaching her all the ins and outs of blogging, sigh……..
