Renovating the Yard

This winter our yard looks kind of pathetic.  I hate seeing the grass look so dreary and dull. I wish the grass would stay green all year long.  I’ve heard of some products that keep your lawn looking great all year long but haven’t ever purchased anything special myself.

Even though we don’t really have to mow the lawn in the winter, it still needs to be taken care of.  I’m trying to convince my husband to consider maybe getting some kind of artificial grass.  We would have to make a pretty big investment to renovate the entire yard, but then it would always looks nice and would never have to be mowed.  Maybe we could sell our nice lawn mower and other lawn care tools to help fund something like AstroTurf.

Fresh Air

It sure got hot here quickly. It seems like just a couple of weeks ago the daily high temperatures were barely in the 60’s, but it has been in the 90’s for several days now. I guess that summer has truly arrived.

One nice thing about living here is the almost constant breeze. So even though it is very hot, I can open the windows and have a breeze carry the fresh air all through the house. I just make sure to keep the part of the windows not open covered with a shade or curtains to help keep the sunlight blocked and the rooms cool.

Running for Coffee

The following entry was written by Guest Blogger Alvaro Jordan.

I started running two years ago when a friend of mine decided to lose weight. She wanted to have company and I needed to lose that last twenty pounds that had plateaued on me. At first we would run together and try not wheeze back home (usually because we talked so much while we tried to run) but it did get better. Now we can actually talk and run at the same time without getting dizzy!

About four months ago we decided to be more competitive with each other so we started betting on who got to the bench in our park first. The winner had to buy coffee for the other one. Since we meet at six o’clock in the morning, there have been times where I had to hunt down my flashlight before switching on my home security alarm (all home security) and going out the door. We have really started trying to run faster and are getting ready to run an actual race for the first time. I don’t think they will be serving coffee for the race drink but that’s okay. It goes to a great cause and helps me keep in shape. Anyway, I can keep up with her now so at least I am only buying coffee half the time.

Weather…

Well it’s starting to get cold.  I hate winter!  There is no life outside; everything is dead and freezing! I am a person of the sun!  I think I am going to move to the beach!

Play in the water

My daughter loves to play in the water.  Some days it is very hard to get away to the pool or to the lake, so she has to make do with playing in the water sprinkler in the yard.  This I do not mind at all.  She gets to play in the water and my yard gets some much needed water on it at the same time.  The pool is only about a mile away.  Call me old fashioned but I think the parents need to be at the pool with their kids. It is not a handy dandy baby sitter for the summer.  You need to be with your kids, it there so everyone can have fun at the pool.

Snake

We have a new pet out in the front yard.  We have been invaded by a six foot black snake that has taken up residence in our front yard.  A couple of years ago we had another bigger black snake in the same spot in the yard.  I picked up the first one and it drug the ground on both ends.  It must of been eight feet long. This new one is smaller and it is not afraid of us at all.  It may of been a pet that was let go because it got too big or the kids lost interest.  I do not mind the snake… it eats moles and mice so it is welcome to our yard.

Clean up

We have been trying to get the yard cleaned up and all the leaves raked up but, as soon as we make some headway on it we get another storm that blows more leaves from our neighbor’s yard into our freshly raked yard. That is one thing I really dislike about this time of year; the leaves go everywhere and we try to keep ours raked up and we get more leaves that could ever be on our trees. Once we get the last ones up it will be spring and we will not have to worry about the mess anymore.
